4-N,N-Diethylamino sulfonyl phenyl amine was synthesized by diazotization and coupled with 8-hydroxyquinoline. The resultant 5-(4-N,N-diethylamino sulfonyl phenyl azo)-8-hydorxy quinoline (DSAQ) was characterized by elemental analysis and spectral studies. The transition metal chelatesviz. Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Mn2+and Zn2+of DSAQ were prepared and characterized by metal-ligand (M:L) ratio. IR and reflectance spectroscopy and magnetic properties. The anti fungal activity of DSAQ and its metal chelates was screened against various fungi. The results show that all these samples are good antifungal agents.

Aminomethylation (i.e.Mannich reaction) of benzimidazole was carried out by treating benzimidalzole with formaldehyde and 4-aminosalicylic acid. The resultant compound was designated as 1-(4-carboxy-3-hydroxyphenyl aminomethyl) benzimidazole (BI-SA). The transition metal complexes of Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Zn2+and Fe3+of BI-SA have been prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, spectral studies, magnetic moment determination, molar conductivity measurement and microbicidal activity.

A series of novel binuclear transition metal complexes was synthesized by reaction of a Schiff base ligand (1-Methyl-2-(2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-pyrimidin-4-ylimino)-propylideneamino-acetic acid) (LaH) derived from 4-amino-pyrimidine-2-one, diacetyl, glycine and corresponding chloride salt of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) metals in 1:1 (metal : ligand) molar ratio. The compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductance measurement, magnetic moment measurement and various spectral studies viz. IR, UV-visible, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, EPR and ESI-MS. Molar conductance measurement data revealed non-electrolytic nature of metal complexes. Electronic absorption spectral data, electronic paramagnetic resonance parameters and magnetic moment values revealed an octahedral geometry for binuclear metal complexes. Cyclic voltammetric study of Ni(II) complex shows a couple of one electron anodic responses near 0.70 V and 1.10 V. In vitro biological activity of Schiff base ligand and binuclear complexes has been checked against bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi) and fungi (Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis) to assess their antibacterial and antifungal properties.

2-Chloro-6-methylquinoline-3-carbaldehyde was condensed witho-Phenylenediammine and 2-aminophenol in presence of potassium iodide. The resulting Methylquinolino[3,2-b][1,5]benzodiazepine (MQBD) and Methylquinolino[3,2-b][1,5]benzoxazepine(MQBO) were characterized by elemental analysis and spectral studies. The metal chelatesvizPd(II), Rh(III) and Ru(III) of ligands were prepared and characterized by metal-ligand (M:L) ratio, UV-Visible, IR,1H NMR spectroscopes and magnetic properties. The antibacterial and antifungal activity of MQBD, MQBO and its metal complexes were screened against various bacteria and fungi. The results show that all these samples are good antimicrobial agents.

Benzimidazolo benzothiophene derivatives were prepared by liquid phase combinatorial synthesis using soluble polymer support PEG 5000 and 4-fluoro-3-nitrobenzoic acid as starting materials with substituted primary amines. All these synthesized compounds were established by the spectral data and tested for antimicrobial activity against gram positive bacteria,i.e. S. aureus, B. subtilisand gram negative bacteria,E.coliandP.aeruginosaand anti fungal activity againstC. albicans. Ampicillin and ciprofloxacin were used as standard for antibacterial activity and cotrimoxazole for anti fungal activity. Compared with standards compounds(1a-h)showed significant activity against bacterial species and1gshowed significant activity against fungal species.
