Total polyphenol content, catechins content, and antioxidant capacities of green, dark, oolong, and black teas made fromCamellia sinensisin China were evaluated. The total polyphenol content of 20 samples of tea was in the range of 7.82–32.36%. Total catechins content was in the range of 4.34–24.27%. The antioxidant capacity of tea extract was determined by the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) test and the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging test. Total polyphenol content, catechins content, and antioxidant capacity decreased in the following order: green > oolong > black > dark tea. A positive correlation existed between the antioxidant capacity and total polyphenol content or catechins content (R2=0.67–0.87). The antioxidant capacities of five major catechins (epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatechin gallate (ECG), epicatechin, epigallocatechin, and catechin) were determined by online HPLC DPPH radical-scavenging; the antioxidant activity of tea was mainly attributed to the esterified catechins (EGCG or ECG).

Abstract Objectives Sargassum (S) species, a marine brown alga consumed in Asian countries, have various health benefits, such as improving the conditions of cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, and hypopigmentation. And these benefits are associated with their strong antioxidant capacities. However, antioxidant capacities of S. species have not been thoroughly explored and compared. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the antioxidant capacities of eleven S. species grown off the Korean coast. Methods Ethanol extracts of eleven S. Species (S. hemiphyllum, S. coreanum, S. horneri, S. Confusum, S. siliquastrum, S. miyabei, S. Serratifolium, S. filicinum, S. Micracanthum, S. macrocarpum, and S. yendoi) provided by National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea were evaporated. The powdered samples were dissolved in 80% methanol as 100 mg/L to measure ABTS, DPPH, and superoxide radical scavenging activities. For the ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging capacities, the antioxidant capacities were expressed as mg vitamin C equivalent antioxidant capacity (VCEAC)/100 mg. For the superoxide radical scavenging capacity, inhibition rate of superoxide radical generation (%) was calculated. Results Among eleven species, four showed notable radical scavenging capacities including S. miyabei, S. hemiphyllum, S. filicinum, and S. serratifolium. For DPPH radical scavenging capacity, S. miyabei showed the greatest antioxidant capacity (193.6 mg VCEAC/100 mg) followed by S. hemiphyllum, (137.9), S. filicinum (78.2), and S. serratifolium (75.4). For ABTS radical scavenging capacity, S. hemiphyllum showed the greatest capacity as 205.7 mg VCEAC/100 mg followed by S. miyabei (186.2), S. filicinum (140.1), and S. serratifolium (99.5). S. hemiphyllum inhibited about 52% of superoxide radical generation followed by S. miyabei (43.7%), S. filicinum (40.4%) and S. serratifolium (34.8%). Vitamin C as positive control inhibited 34.7% of superoxide radical generation. Conclusions Our results exhibited that various S. species showed different antioxidant capacities, indicating the different compositions and proportions of antioxidant compounds in the species. Therefore, further study is warranted to investigate bioactive compounds of the S. species based on our screening. Background. Garcinia is a large genus which has promising bioactivities. However, the properties of many Garcinia species have not been investigated thoroughly. Aim. To determine the antioxidant and antimicrobial capabilities of the extracts from different Garcinia species. Methodology. Six Garcinia species, including Garcinia fusca, Garcinia hopii, Garcinia planchonii, Garcinia nigrolineata, Garcinia gaudichaudii, and Garcinia tinctoria were extracted using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol, producing n-hexane extract (HE), ethyl acetate extract (EAE), and methanol extract (ME). After that, the total polyphenol content was evaluated using Folin–Ciocalteu assay. DPPH, hydroxyl radical scavenging, and total antioxidant capacity assays were performed to test the antioxidant activity. Subsequently, the antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacterial strains were assessed using Kirby Bauer and the broth microdilution methods. Results. Many Garcinia extracts contained high total polyphenol content consisting of ME of G. hopii ad G. tinctoria, and EAE of G. planchonii and G. tinctoria. The EAE of G. tinctoria showed effective antioxidant capacity (IC50 = 1.5 µg/mL). Additionally, the EAE of G. gaudichaudii was effective against Gram-positive bacteria with minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) of 15.625–25 µg/mL whereas ME of G. planchonii was effective against both Gram-positive bacteria (MIC = 160 µg/mL) and Gram-negative bacteria (MIC = 75 µg/mL). Conclusion. Several extracts of Garcinia species demonstrated valuable antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

To find out a good candidate of cosmetic source and screened for antimicrobial, antioxidant and whitening activities. In the antioxidant experiment, supercritical Halopteris scoparia extraction (SHE) and hydrothermal Halopteris scoparia extraction (HHE) were slightly different depending on the experimental method (Total polyphenol content measurement, DPPH radical scavenging ability, ABTS radical scavenging ability, and SOD-like activity) and in the enzyme experiment (Elastase, Tyrosinase inhibition activity), the supercritical extract was more effective. In supercritical fluid, Halopteris scoparia extracts showed good antimicrobial activity against Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli but hydrothermal extract had no effect about the rest of the strains. Therefore, it can be expected that the supercritical Halopteris scoparia extract with excellent antibacterial activity can be used as a cosmetic material.

Abstract Objectives It has been a long time since seaweeds have been used for food ingredients in Asian countries. Recently, a body of research has revealed the health benefits of bioactive compounds in seaweeds, especially their antioxidant capacities. Although numerous seaweeds inhabit in the ocean, only a small percentage has been explored for functional food. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the antioxidant capacities of various seaweeds grown off the Korean coast to screen for the potential functional food sources. Methods Ten ethanol extracts of Korean seaweeds were provided by the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea, which included Scytosiphon gracilis, Scytosiphon lomentaria, Sargassum muticum, Sargassum confusum, Petrospongium rugosum, Sargassum fusiforme, Petalonia fascia, Sargassum nigrifolium, Ishige foliacea, and Myelophycus simplex. Hundred mg/L of samples in 80% methanol was used to measure their ABTS, DPPH, and superoxide radical scavenging activities. Mg vitamin C equivalent antioxidant capacity (VCEAC)/100 mg was used to express the ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging capacities. For the superoxide radical scavenging capacity, inhibition rate of superoxide radical generation (%) was calculated. Results Among the ten seaweeds, S. nigrifolium and I. foliacea exhibited the most significant radical scavenging capacities. DPPH radical scavenging capacities of I. foliacea and S. nigrifolium were 122.4 mg VCEAC/100 mg and 95.8 mg VCEAC/100 mg, respectively. For ABTS radical scavenging capacity, I. foliacea exhibited 178.5 mg VCEAC/100 mg, followed by S. nigrifolium as 80.9 mg VCEAC/100 mg. I. foliacea inhibited about 68% of superoxide radical generation followed by S. nigrifolium (40.6%) while vitamin C as positive control inhibited about 28.9% of superoxide radical generation. The antioxidant capacities measured by the three assays were positively correlated with each other. Conclusions The current study explored total antioxidant capacities of various Korean seaweeds and found I. foliacea and S. nigrifolium as the most potential antioxidant-rich food resources. Further research would be warranted to investigate bioactive compounds from S. nigrifolium and I. foliacea. The plant Morinda citrifolia L. (noni) has been the focus of many recent studies due to its potential effects on treatment and prevention of several diseases. However, there are few in vivo and in vitro studies concerning its composition and antioxidant capacity. The aim of the present study was to determine the total polyphenol content (TPC) and antioxidant capacity of a juice commercialized as noni juice, but containing grape, blueberry and noni fruits. Commercial noni juice was compared against its separate constituents of blueberry and grape juice. Folin-Ciocalteu and DPPH• methods were used to determine the concentration of total polyphenol content and antioxidant activity, respectively. Commercial noni juice presented higher values of TPC (91.90 mg of gallic acid/100 mL juice) and antioxidant activity (5.85 mmol/L) compared to its 5% diluted constituents. Concentrated blueberry juice presented higher TPC and antioxidant activity than the other juices analyzed. Considering that the blueberry and grape juices account for only 10% in the composition of commercial noni juice, it can be inferred that these two components contribute significantly to the antioxidant activity. Therefore, additional studies are necessary in order to elucidate the contribution of the noni juice as an antioxidant.

To determine the effect of different harvesting time on antioxidant capacity in Jerusalem artichoke polysaccharides (inulin), the Jerusalem artichoke before and after overwintering were collected from the same region, and then evaluate their antioxidant capacity in vitro by reducing power assay, DPPH radical-scavenging assay and hydroxyl radical-scavenging assay. Ascorbic acid at similar mass concentration was served as positive control. The results showed no significant difference were observed in reducing power when the absorbance values were about 0.3. When the mass concentrations before and after overwintering were 0.9 mg/mL and 1.7 mg/mL, the DPPH radical-scavenging rate both reached at 50%. And when the mass concentrations were both 10 mg/mL, the hydroxyl radical-scavengings were 35.8% and 27.9%, respectively. Thus, it could be concluded that the antioxidant capacity in Jerusalem artichoke polysaccharides before overwintering was higher than that after overwintering, and showed a good dose-dependent manner with its mass concentration.

Fruits of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) are valued mainly for their nutraceutical properties, and are among the fruits with the highest antioxidant activity due to their high content of phenolic compounds. The aim of this research was to assess the total polyphenol content and antioxidant activity of fruits in six wild bilberry populations from two regions of Romania over three years. The total polyphenol content was determined according to the Folin–Ciocalteu modified method, while the antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging assay. The Padis and Raul Lung populations registered the highest values of polyphenol content and antioxidant activity, as such the fruits of these bilberry populations could be considered potential sources of antioxidants for direct consumption or for use as ingredients for food products or food supplements. Significant variation of total polyphenol content and antioxidant activity was observed both between populations from the same region and from different regions. The low level of broad sense heritability for total polyphenol content and antioxidant activity associated with the high effects of year, and population–year interaction indicates that the accumulation of polyphenols in bilberry fruits is influenced by changes in environmental conditions.

LDL oxidation and oxidative stress are closely related to atherosclerosis. Therefore, natural antioxidants have been studied as promising candidates. In the present study, the LDL oxidation inhibition activity of bioactive compounds from Halimeda incrassata seaweed. associated to antioxidant capacity, was evaluated in vitro. Experimental work was conducted with lyophilized aqueous extract and phenolic-rich fractions of the seaweed and their effect on LDL oxidation was evaluated using heparin-precipitated LDL (hep-LDL) with exposure to Cu2+ ions and AAPH as the free radical generator. H. incrassata had a protective effect for hep-LDL in both systems and the presence of phenolic compounds contributed to the activity where phenolic-rich fractions showed significant capacity for inhibition of oxidation mediated by Cu2+ ions. The observed effect could be related to the antioxidant potential of polar fractions evidenced by reducing activity and DPPH• radical scavenging. The results obtained in vitro further support the antioxidant and LDL oxidation inhibition properties of H. incrassata and further knowledge toward future phytotherapeutic application of the seaweed.
