Localization is one of the major aspects in underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs). Therefore, it is important to know the accurate position of the sensor node in large scale applications like disaster prevention, tactical surveillance, and monitoring. Due to the inefficiency of the global positioning system (GPS) in UWSN, it is very difficult to localize a node in underwater environment compared to terrestrial networks. To minimize the localization error and enhance the localization coverage of the network, two routing protocols are proposed; the first one is mobile autonomous underwater vehicle (MobiL-AUV) and the second one is cooperative MobiL (CO-MobiL). In MobiL-AUV, AUVs are deployed and equipped with GPS and act as reference nodes. These reference nodes are used to localize all the nonlocalized ordinary sensor nodes in order to reduce the localization error and maximize the network coverage. CO-MobiL is presented in order to improve the network throughput by using the maximal ratio combining (MRC) as diversity technique which combines both signals, received from the source and received from the relay at the destination. It uses amplify-and-forward (AF) mechanism to improve the signal between the source and the destination. To support our claims, extensive simulations are performed.

There are a plenty of unexploited resources that lies underwater that covers almost 75% of the earth.In order to utilise them,the field of underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSN) is attracting the  researchers to extend their thoughts in this field. The wireless sensor networks are heavy networks that consist of small low cost sensors that have a large amount of solving ability and energy resources which can be applicable in any type of irregular environments irrespective of changing conditions. Keeping in view of the real-time remote data transferring requirements, underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASN) has been recognised as a preferred network because it satisfies all aspects of data transfer. In UASN, the required availability and recycling of energy resources along with specified utilisation of data with the help of utilized sensor nodes for energy requirements that are necessary are done for the development of  further theories in these contexts. Due to these causes, the maximum underwater resources utilisation techniques mainly depends on UAN (Underwater Acoustic Networks).Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) suitable for applications on submarine detection and monitoring,where nodes collect data with a mobile autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) via optical communications, and applied accordingly to deal with further approaches. They provide continuous monitoring for various applications like ocean sampling network, pollution monitoring, submarine detection, disaster prevention etc.This paper particularly deals with a brief collection of the UWSN applications and some of the algorithms for the path finding in order to pass  maximum valued information(VOI) among the different nodes.


In underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSN) the node mobility is higher as the nodes drift with the water so identifying the exact location of the nodes is a challenging task. Terrestrial WSN use Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate the nodes, but the same cannot be applied for UWSN as they do not propagate under water. Underwater uses acoustic channel for communication which suffers from low bandwidth, high propagation delay, high bit error rate, high node mobility and variable sound speed which makes localization a challenging task. Hence there is an evolving requirement for energy efficient localization algorithm. To overcome these problems we propose an Energy Efficient Cluster Based Localization Algorithm (EECBLA) to minimize the energy utilization and identify an accurate location of the sensor nodes. EECBLA is a cluster based localization protocol where the GPS enabled high power anchor nodes are utilized to estimate the location of the un localized sensor nodes. To improve the localization accuracy it is necessary to improve the network connectivity. Network connectivity can be improved by increasing the lifetime of the sensor nodes. EECBLA proposes an energy efficient localization scheme where the node operates in active and sleep mode to efficiently utilize the available energy. In this research work we take a sample example and demonstrate how the location is estimated through TOA and Euclidean distance. Accuracy of TOA is measured as 8.36, 4.76, 13.21, 14.85, 16.26 and 3.60. The average estimated localization error of EECBLA is around 4m to 6m. EECBLA localization error is compared with other localization algorithms like 3DUL whose average localization error is 5m to 10m, SDMA whose average localization error is around 24% and localization error of Hybrid RSS ranges from 4.69m to 15.85m. When compared with these methodologies there is a decrease in localization error by 3%, and the increase in accuracy by 5% in EECBLA protocol

Background: Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is considered one of the key research area in the recent. Various applications of WSNs need geographic location of the sensor nodes. Objective: Localization in WSNs plays an important role because without knowledge of sensor nodes location the information is useless. Finding the accurate location is very crucial in Wireless Sensor Networks. The efficiency of any localization approach is decided on the basis of accuracy and localization error. In range-free localization approaches, the location of unknown nodes are computed by collecting the information such as minimum hop count, hop size information from neighbors nodes. Methods: Although various studied have been done for computing the location of nodes but still, it is an enduring research area. To mitigate the problems of existing algorithms, a range-free Improved Weighted Novel DV-Hop localization algorithm is proposed. Main motive of the proposed study is to reduced localization error with least energy consumption. Firstly, the location information of anchor nodes is broadcasted upto M hop to decrease the energy consumption. Further, a weight factor and correction factor are introduced which refine the hop size of anchor nodes. Results: The refined hop size is further utilized for localization to reduces localization error significantly. The simulation results of the proposed algorithm are compared with other existing algorithms for evaluating the effectiveness and the performance. The simulated results are evaluated in terms localization error and computational cost by considering different parameters such as node density, percentage of anchor nodes, transmission range, effect of sensing field and effect of M on localization error. Further statistical analysis is performed on simulated results to prove the validation of proposed algorithm. A paired T-test is applied on localization error and localization time. The results of T-test depicts that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the localization accuracy with least energy consumption as compared to other existing algorithms like DV-Hop, IWCDV-Hop, and IDV-Hop. Conclusion: From the simulated results, it is concluded that the proposed algorithm offers 36% accurate localization than traditional DV-Hop and 21 % than IDV-Hop and 13% than IWCDV-Hop.

The advent of various wireless technologies has paved the way for the realization of new infrastructures and applications for smart cities. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are one of the most important among these technologies. WSNs are widely used in various applications in our daily lives. Due to their cost effectiveness and rapid deployment, WSNs can be used for securing smart cities by providing remote monitoring and sensing for many critical scenarios including hostile environments, battlefields, or areas subject to natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcano eruptions, and floods or to large-scale accidents such as nuclear plants explosions or chemical plumes. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new framework where WSNs are adopted for remote sensing and monitoring in smart city applications. We propose using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to act as a data mule to offload the sensor nodes and transfer the monitoring data securely to the remote control center for further analysis and decision making. Furthermore, the paper provides insight about implementation challenges in the realization of the proposed framework. In addition, the paper provides an experimental evaluation of the proposed design in outdoor environments, in the presence of different types of obstacles, common to typical outdoor fields. The experimental evaluation revealed several inconsistencies between the performance metrics advertised in the hardware-specific data-sheets. In particular, we found mismatches between the advertised coverage distance and signal strength with our experimental measurements. Therefore, it is crucial that network designers and developers conduct field tests and device performance assessment before designing and implementing the WSN for application in a real field setting.

The underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) have been applied in lots of fields such as environment monitoring, military surveillance, data collection, etc. Deployment of sensor nodes in 3D UWSNs is a crucial issue, however, it is a challenging problem due to the complex underwater environment. This paper proposes a growth ring style uneven node depth-adjustment self-deployment optimization algorithm (GRSUNDSOA) to improve the coverage and reliability of UWSNs, meanwhile, and to solve the problem of energy holes. In detail, a growth ring style-based scheme is proposed for constructing the connective tree structure of sensor nodes and a global optimal depth-adjustment algorithm with the goal of comprehensive optimization of both maximizing coverage utilization and energy balance is proposed. Initially, the nodes are scattered to the water surface to form a connected network on this 2D plane. Then, starting from sink node, a growth ring style increment strategy is presented to organize the common nodes as tree structures and each root of subtree is determined. Meanwhile, with the goal of global maximizing coverage utilization and energy balance, all nodes depths are computed iteratively. Finally, all the nodes dive to the computed position once and a 3D underwater connected network with non-uniform distribution and balanced energy is constructed. A series of simulation experiments are performed. The simulation results show that the coverage and reliability of UWSN are improved greatly under the condition of full connectivity and energy balance, and the issue of energy hole can be avoided effectively. Therefore, GRSUNDSOA can prolong the lifetime of UWSN significantly.

Today the researchers want to collect as much data as possible from different locations for monitoring reasons. In this context large-scale wireless sensor networks are becoming an active topic of research (Kahn1999). Because of the different locations and environments in which these sensor networks can be used, specific requirements for the hardware apply. The hardware of the sensor nodes must be robust, provide sufficient storage and communication capabilities, and get along with limited power resources. Sensor nodes such as the Berkeley-Mote Family (Polastre2006, Schmitt2006) are capable of meeting these requirements. These sensor nodes are small and light devices with radio communication and the capability for collecting sensor data. In this chapter the authors review the key elements for sensor networks and give an overview on possible applications in the field of monitoring.

During the past few years, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have become widely used due to their large amount of applications. The use of WSNs is an imperative necessity for future revolutionary areas like ecological fields or smart cities in which more than hundreds or thousands of sensor nodes are deployed. In those large scale WSNs, hierarchical approaches improve the performance of the network and increase its lifetime. Hierarchy inside a WSN consists in cutting the whole network into sub-networks called clusters which are led by Cluster Heads. In spite of the advantages of the clustering on large WSNs, it remains a non-deterministic polynomial hard problem which is not solved efficiently by traditional clustering. The recent researches conducted on Machine Learning, Computational Intelligence, and WSNs bring out the optimized clustering algorithms for WSNs. These kinds of clustering are based on environmental behaviors and outperform the traditional clustering algorithms. However, due to the diversity of WSN applications, the choice of an appropriate paradigm for a clustering solution remains a problem. In this paper, we conduct a wide review of proposed optimized clustering solutions nowadays. In order to evaluate them, we consider 10 parameters. Based on these parameters, we propose a comparison of these optimized clustering approaches. From the analysis, we observe that centralized clustering solutions based on the Swarm Intelligence paradigm are more adapted for applications with low energy consumption, high data delivery rate, or high scalability than algorithms based on the other presented paradigms. Moreover, when an application does not need a large amount of nodes within a field, the Fuzzy Logic based solution are suitable.

The underwater wireless sensor networks composed of sensor nodes are deployed underwater for monitoring and gathering submarine data. Since the underwater environment is usually unpredictable, making the nodes move or be damaged easily, such that there are several vital objectives in the data forwarding issue, such as the delivery success rate, the error rate, and the energy consumption. To this end, we propose a data forwarding algorithm based on Markov thought, which logically transforms the underwater three-dimensional deployment model into a two-dimensional model, and thus the nodes are considered to be hierarchically deployed. The data delivery is then achieved through a “bottom to top” forwarding mode, where the delivery success rate is improved and the energy consumption is reduced because the established paths are more stable, and the proposed algorithm is self-adaptive to the dynamic routing loads.
