First, based on a linear passive capacitor C, a linear passive inductor L, an active-charge-controlled memristor, and a fourth-degree polynomial function determined by charge, an integer-order memristive system is suggested. The proposed integer-order memristive system can generate two-scroll, three-scroll, and four-scroll chaotic attractors. The complex dynamics behaviors are investigated numerically. The Lyapunov exponent spectrum with respect to linear passive inductor L and the two-scroll, three-scroll, and four-scroll chaotic attractors are yielded by numerical calculation. Second, based on the integer-order memristive chaotic system with a four-scroll attractor, a fractional-order version memristive system is suggested. The complex dynamics behaviors of its fractional-order version are studied numerically. The largest Lyapunov exponent spectrum with respect to fractional-order p is yielded. The coexisting two kinds of three-scroll chaotic attractors and the coexisting three-scroll and four-scroll chaotic attractors can be found in its fractional-order version.

This paper introduces a charge-controlled memristor based on the classical Chuas circuit. It also designs a novel four-dimensional chaotic system and investigates its complex dynamics, including phase portrait, Lyapunov exponent spectrum, bifurcation diagram, equilibrium point, dissipation and stability. The system appears as single-wing, double-wings chaotic attractors and the Lyapunov exponent spectrum of the system is symmetric with respect to the initial value. In addition, symmetric and asymmetric coexisting attractors are generated by changing the initial value and parameters. The findings indicate that the circuit system is equipped with excellent multi-stability. Finally, the circuit is implemented in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and analog circuits.

Based on the integer-order memristive system that can generate two-scroll, three-scroll, and four-scroll chaotic attractors, in this paper, we found other phenomena that two kinds of three-scroll chaotic attractors coexist in this system with different initial conditions. Furthermore, we proposed a coexisting fractional-order system based on the three-scroll chaotic attractors system, in which the three-scroll or four-scroll chaotic attractors emerged with different fractional-orders q. Meanwhile, with fractional-order q=0.965 and different initial conditions, coexistence of two kinds of three-scroll and four-scroll chaotic attractors is found simultaneously. Finally, we discussed controlling chaos for the fractional-order memristive chaotic system.

In this paper, the Adomian decomposition method (ADM) is applied to solve the fractional-order system with line equilibrium. The dynamics of the system is analyzed by means of the Lyapunov exponent spectrum, bifurcations, chaotic attractor, and largest Lyapunov exponent diagram. At the same time, through the Lyapunov exponent spectrum and bifurcation graph of the system under the change of the initial value, the influence of fractional order q on the system state can be observed. That is, integer-order systems do not have the phenomenon of attractors coexistence, while fractional-order systems have it.

Conclusive experimental evidence is presented for the existence of a low-dimensional temporal dynamical system in an open flow, namely the near field of an axisymmetric, subsonic free jet. An initially laminar jet (4 cm air jet in the Reynolds number range 1.1 × 104 [Lt ] ReD × 9.1 × 104) with a top-hat profile was studied using single-frequency, longitudinal, bulk excitation. Two non-dimensional control parameters – forcing frequency StD (≡fexD/Ue, where fez is the excitation frequency, D is the jet exit diameter and Ue is the exit velocity) and forcing amplitude af (≡ u’f/Ue, where u’f is the jet exit r.m.s. longitudinal velocity fluctuation at the excitation frequency) – were varied over the ranges 10-4 < af < 0.3 and 0.3 < StD < 3.0 in order to construct a phase diagram. Periodic and chaotic states were found over large domains of the parameter space. The periodic attractors correspond to stable pairing (SP) and stable double pairing (SDP) of rolled-up vortices. One chaotic attractor, near SP in the parameter space, results from nearly periodic modulations of pairing (NPMP) of vortices. At large scales (i.e. approximately the size of the attractor) in phase space, NPMP exhibits approximately quasi-periodic behaviour, including modulation sidebands around ½fex in u-spectra, large closed loops in its Poincaré sections, correlation dimension v ∼ 2 and largest Lyapunov exponent λ1 ∼ 0. But investigations at smaller scales (i.e. distances greater than, but of the order of, trajectory separation) in phase space reveal chaos, as shown by v > 2 and λ1 > 0. The other chaotic attractor, near SDP, results from nearly periodic modulations of the first vortex pairing but chaotic modulations of the second pairing and has a broadband spectrum, a dimension 2.5 [Lt ] v [Lt ] 3 and the largest Lyapunov exponent 0.2 [Lt ] λ1 [Lt ] 0.7 bits per orbit (depending on measurement locations in physical and parameter spaces).A definition that distinguishes between physically and dynamically open flows is proposed and justified by our experimental results. The most important conclusion of this study is that a physically open flow, even one that is apparently dynamically open due to convective instability, can exhibit dynamically closed behaviour as a result of feedback. A conceptual model for transitional jets is proposed based on twodimensional instabilities, subharmonic resonance and feedback from downstream vortical structures to the nozzle lip. Feedback was quantified and shown to affect the exit fundamental–subharmonic phase difference ϕ – a crucial variable in subharmonic resonance and, hence, vortex pairing. The effect of feedback, the sensitivity of pairings to ϕ, the phase diagram, and the documented periodic and chaotic attractors demonstrate the validity of the proposed conceptual model.

Characterizing and quantifying the local dynamics of the human spine during various athletic exercises is important for therapeutic and physiotherapy reasons or athletic related effects on the human spine. In this study we computed the largest finite-time Lyapunov exponents for the spine of a human subject during an athletic exercise for several volunteers. The kinematic data was collected using the 3D motion capture system (Motion Realty Inc.). Four healthy male subjects were asked to perform two sets of 30 jumps. In order to draw a conclusion about the chaotic nature of the dynamics of the lumbar spine Lyapunov exponent spectrum was calculated for each volunteer which included four Lyapunov exponents, one negative, one very close to zero and two positive. Subjects 1, 2 and 4 registered a significant increase in the largest Lyapunov exponent from the first set jumps to the next. Subject 3 registered no change in the values of Lyapunov exponents. Nonlinear analysis of the human spine demonstrates the chaotic nature of the system. The computation of the largest Lyapunov exponents enables a more precise characterization of the dynamics of the human spine.

Multiple chaotic attractors, implying several independent chaotic attractors generated simultaneously in a system from different initial values, are a very interesting and important nonlinear phenomenon, but there are few studies that have previously addressed it to our best knowledge. In this paper, we propose a polynomial function method for generating multiple chaotic attractors from the Sprott B system. The polynomial function extends the number of index-2 saddle foci, which determines the emergence of multiple chaotic attractors in the system. The analysis of the equilibria is presented. Two coexisting chaotic attractors, three coexisting chaotic attractors and four coexisting chaotic attractors are investigated for verifying the effectiveness of the method. The chaotic characteristics of the attractors are shown by bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponent spectrum and phase portraits.

The dynamics of fractional-order systems have attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this paper, we numerically study the bifurcations and chaotic behaviors in the fractional-order simplified Lorenz system using the time-domain scheme. Chaos does exist in this system for a wide range of fractional orders, both less than and greater than three. Complex dynamics with interesting characteristics are presented by means of phase portraits, bifurcation diagrams and the largest Lyapunov exponent. Both the system parameter and the fractional order can be taken as bifurcation parameters, and the range of existing chaos is different for different parameters. The lowest order we found for this system to yield chaos is 2.62.

Although a large number of hidden chaotic attractors have been studied in recent years, most studies only refer to integer-order chaotic systems and neglect the relationships among chaotic attractors. In this paper, we first extend LE1 of sprott from integer-order chaotic systems to fractional-order chaotic systems, and we add two constant controllers which could produce a novel fractional-order chaotic system with hidden chaotic attractors. Second, we discuss its complicated dynamic characteristics with the help of projection pictures and bifurcation diagrams. The new fractional-order chaotic system can exhibit self-excited attractor and three different types of hidden attractors. Moreover, based on fractional-order finite time stability theory, we design finite time synchronization scheme of this new system. And combination synchronization of three fractional-order chaotic systems with hidden chaotic attractors is also derived. Finally, numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed synchronization methods.

An approach for generating multi-scroll chaotic attractors with controllable direction in one plane is proposed. Firstly, an appropriate nonlinear function is selected to control the number and direction of multi-scroll chaotic attractors in the three-order Jerk system. Then, we add new control function to Jerk system and observe Lyapunov exponent spectrum of relative coefficient and the change of equilibrium points. Different multi-scroll chaotic attractors with controllable direction are generated by adjusting the coefficient of the control function in a plane. The implementation of circuit verifies the feasibility of this method.
