In recent years, with the development of advanced technologies for data collection, real-time bus control strategies have been implemented to improve the daily operation of transit systems, especially headway-based holding control which is a proven strategy to reduce bus bunching and improve service reliability for high-frequency bus routes, with the concept of regulating headways between successive buses. This hot topic has inspired the reconsideration of the traditional issue of fleet size optimization and the integrated bus holding control strategy. The traditional headway-based control method only focused on the regulation of bus headways, without considering the number of buses on the route. The number of buses is usually assumed as a given in advance and the task of the control method is to regulate the headways between successive buses. They did not consider the bus fleet size problem integrated with headway-based holding control method. Therefore, this work has presented a set of optimal control formulations to minimize the costs for the passengers and the bus company through calculating the optimal number of buses and the dynamic holding time, taking into account the randomness of passenger arrivals. A set of equations were formulated to obtain the operation of the buses with headway-based holding control or the schedule-based control method. The objective was to minimize the total cost for the passengers and the bus company in the system, and a Monte Carlo simulation based solution method was subsequently designed to solve the optimization model. The effects of this optimization method were tested under different operational settings. A comparison of the total costs was conducted between the headway-based holding control and the schedule-based holding control. It was found that the model was capable of reducing the costs of the bus company and passengers through utilizing headway-based bus holding control combined with optimization of the bus fleet size. The proposed optimization model could minimize the number of buses on the route for a guaranteed service level, alleviating the problem of redundant bus fleet sizes caused by bus bunching in the traditional schedule-based control method.

Platooning is considered to be a very effective method for improving traffic efficiency, traffic safety and fuel economy under the connected and automated environment. The prerequisite for realizing these advantages is how to form a platoon without any collisions and how to maintain and optimize the car-following behavior after platoon formation. However, most of the existing studies focus on the platoon configuration and information transmission method, while only a few attempt to address the issue of platoon formation and optimization methods. To this end, this study proposes a novel platoon formation and optimization model combining graph theory and safety potential field (G-SPF) theory for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) under different vehicle distributions. Compared to previous studies, we innovatively incorporate the concept of the safety potential field to better describe the actual driving risk of vehicles and ensure their absolute safety. A four-step platoon formation and optimization strategy is developed to achieve platoon preliminary formation and platoon driving optimization control. Three traffic scenarios with different CAVs distributions are designed to verify the effectiveness of our proposed platoon formation method based on G-SPF theory, and the simulation results indicate that a collision-free platoon can be formed in a short time. Additionally, the G-SPF-based platoon driving optimization control method is demonstrated by comparing it with two typical control strategies. Compared with the constant spacing and constant time headway control strategies, the simulation results show that our proposed method can improve the traffic capacity by approximately 48.8% and 26.6%, respectively.

SummaryUnderstanding pathogen-agrosystem interaction is particularly essential when applying a control method to minimize pathogen prevalence prior to plant infection. To meet this requirement, frequency of major root rot pathogens isolated from bean root and seed, and their soil populations were examined in farmers’ fields. Multivariate analyses evidenced more frequent isolations of Fusarium solani and Rhizoctonia solani from root and seed compared to Macrophomina phaseolina and Fusarium oxysporum. Two Fusarium species had denser soil populations than R. solani and M. phaseolina. More frequent isolations of pathogens were detected in root and seed collected from Abhar and Khodabandeh compared to Kheirabad region. Agronomic and soil variables corresponded less closely to root infections compared to soil infestation and seed infections. Bean market class, herbicide application, and planting depth were linked to root, seed and soil infestations. Such information provides a basis for increased confidence in choosing appropriate control strategies for a pathogen and region in sustainable agriculture.

Now that oxygen production facilities can be controlled to match the requirements of the dissolution system, improved oxygen dissolution control can result in significant cost savings for oxygen activated sludge plants. This paper examines the potential cost savings of the vacuum exhaust control (VEC) strategy for the City of Houston, Texas 69th Street Treatment Complex. The VEC strategy involves operating a closed-tank reactor slightly below atmospheric pressure and using an exhaust apparatus to remove gas from the last stage of the reactor. Computer simulations for one carbonaceous reactor at the 69th Street Complex are presented for the VEC and conventional control strategies. At 80% of design loading the VEC strategy was found to provide an oxygen utilization efficiency of 94.9% as compared to 77.0% for the conventional control method. At design capacity the oxygen utilization efficiency for VEC and conventional control was found to be 92.3% and 79.5%, respectively. Based on the expected turn-down capability of Houston's oxygen production faciilities, the simulations indicate that the VEC strategy will more than double the possible cost savings of the conventional control method.

Vibrations in the aircraft assembly building will affect the precision of the robotic drilling system. A variable stiffness and damping semiactive vibration control mechanism with quasi-zero stiffness characteristics is developed. The quasi-zero stiffness of the mechanism is realized by the parallel connection of four vertically arranged bearing springs and two symmetrical horizontally arranged negative stiffness elements. Firstly, the quasi-zero stiffness parameters of the mechanism at the static equilibrium position are obtained through analysis. Secondly, the harmonic balance method is used to deal with the differential equations of motion. The effects of every parameter on the displacement transmissibility are analyzed, and the variable parameter control strategies are proposed. Finally, the system responses of the passive and semiactive vibration isolation mechanisms to the segmental variable frequency excitations are compared through virtual prototype experiments. The results show that the frequency range of vibration isolation is widened, and the stability of the vibration control system is effectively improved without resonance through the semiactive vibration control method. It is of innovative significance for ambient vibration control in robotic drilling systems.

The trajcetory plan problem of spece reandezvous mission was studied in this paper using nolinear optimization method. The optimization model was built based on the Hills equations. And by analysis property of the design variables, a transform was put forward , which eliminated the equation and nonlinear constraints as well as decreaseing the problem dimensions. The optimization problem was solved using Adaptive Simulated Annealing (ASA) method, and the rendezvous trajectory was designed.The method was validated by simulation results.

Abstract High efficiency and good section quality are two main objectives of metal bar cropping. A suitable control method can help to achieve both goals. An investigation of the control method of low-cycle fatigue cropping (LCFC) based on the acoustic emission (AE) technique has been proposed in this study. Ring-down counts and kurtosis are used to monitor the whole process of LCFC. The results showed that kurtosis is more suitable for monitoring the LCFC process and as a critical parameter to optimize the control method than ring-down counts in the noisy factory environment.Moreover, three types of materials are studied in this experiment; by combine with the AE results, macroscopic images and microscopic images of sections, characteristics of various LCFC stages are obtained. The results also indicated reduce the area of the transient fracture zone is the key to improve the section quality. Reducing the load frequency before the unstable crack propagation stage will beneficial to realize the goals. Based on the evaluation of kurtosis, an optimized control method is presented, and two control parameters: transient time T and the critical value of the slope of kurtosis C are determined. For 16Mn, 1045 and Al 6061, the T is 5s, 10s, and 1s, respectively. For 16Mn, 1045, and Al 6061, the C is 100, 300, and 0, respectively. Two parameters, h and S, are used to evaluate the section quality and four control strategies are compared. The results indicate the optimal control methods can improve the section quality effectively. The influence trend of reducing loading frequency is investigated by further comparison. It can be seen as the frequency decreases, the efficiency of the section quality improving decreases. In order to realize the optimal results, different control strategies are adopted for different materials. Strategy 1 (high frequency is 20Hz,high frequency thought the whole process), strategy 2 (high frequency is 20Hz,low frequency is 8.33Hz), and strategy 3 (high frequency is 20Hz,low frequency is 6.67Hz) is suitable for Al 6061, 1045, and 16Mn, respectively.

Purpose Once an uneven substrate is aligned, traditional control theories and methods can be used on it, so aligning is of great significance for the development of wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). This paper aims to propose a shape-driven control method for aligning a substrate with slopes to expand the application of WAAM. Design/methodology/approach A substrate with slopes must be aligned by depositing weld beads with slopes. First, considering the large height differences of slopes, multi-layer deposition is needed, and the number of layer of weld beads must be ascertained. Second, the change in the deposition rate is controlled as a ramp function to generate weld beads with slopes. Third, the variation of the deposition rate must be fine-tuned to compensate for the deviation between the actual and theoretical layer heights at the deposition of each layer. Finally, the parameters of the ramp functions at the deposition of each layer are determined through an optimization method. Findings First, to model the response function of layer height to deposition rate, the experiments are conducted with the deposition rate jumping from 4 to 8 mm/s and from 8 to 4 mm/s. When the deposition rate jumps from 4 to 8 mm/s and from 8 to 4 mm/s, the difference in the height of each layer decreases as the number of layer increases. Second, the variation of the deposition rate can be fine-tuned based on the deviation between the measured and theoretical layer heights because the variation of the deposition rate is proportional to the layer height when the initial and end deposition rates are near 4 or 8 mm/s, respectively. Third, the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective for single-layer aligning and aligning a substrate with one or more slopes. Originality/value The proposed method can expand the application of WAAM to an uneven substrate with slopes and lays the foundation for aligning tasks focused on uneven substrates with more complex shapes.

Truss optimization has the goal of achieving savings in costs and material while maintaining structural characteristics. In this research a 10 bar truss was structurally optimized in Rhino 6 using genetic algorithm optimization method. Results from previous research where sizing optimization was limited to using only three different cross-sections were compared to a sizing and shape optimization model which uses only those three cross-sections. Significant savings in mass have been found when using this approach. An analysis was conducted of the necessary bill of materials for these solutions. This research indicates practical effects which optimization can achieve in truss design.

Abstract Modern day scenario has an increasing power demand due to the growing development which indeed increases the load on the generation which might cause turbulence in the system and may bounce out of stability. The governor itself can’t handle such frequent load changes and adjust the generation amount to keep the frequency between the margins. This paper proposes an approach towards such predicament to incorporate an optimization method in order to ensure stability of the system despite the drastic changes in demand. Load frequency control is a control method for maintaining the frequency of the system during the change in demand. Use of controllers has proven to be effective in controlling the frequency deviations in the power systems and the response of the controller is further improved using optimization technique for better stability. The PID controller tuned by Particle Swarm Optimization is employed in multi-area system which reduces the time response by a considerable amount and the deviation settles much quicker despite the rapid load changes. The proposed controller is executed further for renewable energy sources connected to the individual areas and demonstration proves that the optimized controller is efficient enough in handling the frequency deviations when wind and solar with sunlight penetration is incorporated.
