The accuracy of object detection based on kitchen appliance scene images can suffer severely from external disturbances such as various levels of specular reflection, uneven lighting, and spurious lighting, as well as internal scene-related disturbances such as invalid edges and pattern information unrelated to the object of interest. The present study addresses these unique challenges by proposing an object detection method based on improved faster R-CNN algorithm. The improved method can identify object regions scattered in various areas of complex appliance scenes quickly and automatically. In this paper, we put forward a feature enhancement framework, named deeper region proposal network (D-RPN). In D-RPN, a feature enhancement module is designed to more effectively extract feature information of an object on kitchen appliance scene. Then, we reconstruct a U-shaped network structure using a series of feature enhancement modules. We have evaluated the proposed D-RPN on the dataset we created. It includes all kinds of kitchen appliance control panels captured in nature scene by image collector. In our experiments, the best-performing object detection method obtained a mean average precision mAP value of 89.84% in the testing dataset. The test results show that the proposed improved algorithm achieves higher detecting accuracy than state-of-the-art object detection methods. Finally, our proposed detection method can further be used in text recognition.

It is of great significance to apply the object detection methods to automatically detect boulders from planetary images and analyze their distribution. This contributes to the selection of candidate landing sites and the understanding of the geological processes. This paper improves the state-of-the-art object detection method of YOLOv5 with attention mechanism and designs a pyramid based approach to detect boulders from planetary images. A new feature fusion layer has been designed to capture more shallow features of the small boulders. The attention modules implemented by combining the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) and efficient channel attention network (ECA-Net) are also added into YOLOv5 to highlight the information that contribute to boulder detection. Based on the Pascal Visual Object Classes 2007 (VOC2007) dataset which is widely used for object detection evaluations and the boulder dataset that we constructed from the images of Bennu asteroid, the evaluation results have shown that the improvements have increased the performance of YOLOv5 by 3.4% in precision. With the improved YOLOv5 detection method, the pyramid based approach extracts several layers of images with different resolutions from the large planetary images and detects boulders of different scales from different layers. We have also applied the proposed approach to detect the boulders on Bennu asteroid. The distribution of the boulders on Bennu asteroid has been analyzed and presented.

An essential element for intelligent perception in mechatronic and robotic systems (M&RS) is the visual object detection algorithm. With the ever-increasing advance of artificial neural networks (ANN), researchers have proposed numerous ANN-based visual object detection methods that have proven to be effective. However, networks with cumbersome structures do not befit the real-time scenarios in M&RS, necessitating the techniques of model compression. In the paper, a novel approach to training light-weight visual object detection networks is developed by revisiting knowledge distillation. Traditional knowledge distillation methods are oriented towards image classification is not compatible with object detection. Therefore, a variant of knowledge distillation is developed and adapted to a state-of-the-art keypoint-based visual detection method. Two strategies named as positive sample retaining and early distribution softening are employed to yield a natural adaption. The mutual consistency between teacher model and student model is further promoted through a hint-based distillation. By extensive controlled experiments, the proposed method is testified to be effective in enhancing the light-weight network’s performance by a large margin.

Recognition and detection of an object in the watched scenes is a characteristic organic capacity. Animals and human being play out this easily in day by day life to move without crashes, to discover sustenance, dodge dangers, etc. Be that as it may, comparable PC techniques and calculations for scene examination are not all that direct, in spite of their exceptional advancement. Object detection is the process in which finding or recognizing cases of articles (for instance faces, mutts or structures) in computerized pictures or recordings. This is the fundamental task in computer. For detecting the instance of an object and to pictures having a place with an article classification object detection method usually used learning algorithm and extracted features. This paper proposed a method for moving object detection and vehicle detection.

Quickly detecting related primitive events for multiple complex events from massive event stream usually faces with a great challenge due to their single pattern characteristic of the existing complex event detection methods. Aiming to solve the problem, a multiple pattern complex event detection scheme based on decomposition and merge sharing is proposed in this article. The achievement of this article lies that we successfully use decomposition and merge sharing technology to realize the high-efficient detection for multiple complex events from massive event streams. Specially, in our scheme, we first use decomposition sharing technology to decompose pattern expressions into multiple subexpressions, which can provide many sharing opportunities for subexpressions. We then use merge sharing technology to construct a multiple pattern complex events by merging sharing all the same prefix, suffix, or subpattern into one based on the above decomposition results. As a result, our proposed detection method in this article can effectively solve the above problem. The experimental results show that the proposed detection method in this article outperforms some general detection methods in detection model and detection algorithm in multiple pattern complex event detection as a whole.

Lower detection accuracy and insufficient detection ability for small objects are the main problems of the region-free object detection algorithm. Aiming at solving the abovementioned problems, an improved object detection method using feature map refinement and anchor optimization is proposed. Firstly, the reverse fusion operation is performed on each of the object detection layer, which can provide the lower layers with more semantic information by the fusion of detection features at different levels. Secondly, the self-attention module is used to refine each detection feature map, calibrates the features between channels, and enhances the expression ability of local features. In addition, the anchor optimization model is introduced on each feature layer associated with anchors, and the anchors with higher probability of containing an object and more closely match the location and size of the object are obtained. In this model, semantic features are used to confirm and remove negative anchors to reduce search space of the objects, and preliminary adjustments are made to the locations and sizes of anchors. Comprehensive experimental results on PASCAL VOC detection dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. In particular, with VGG-16 and lower dimension 300×300 input size, the proposed method achieves a mAP of 79.1% on VOC 2007 test set with an inference speed of 24.7 milliseconds per image.

We propose an object detection method that predicts the orientation bounding boxes (OBB) to estimate objects locations, scales and orientations based on YOLO (You Only Look Once), which is one of the top detection algorithms performing well both in accuracy and speed. Horizontal bounding boxes(HBB), which are not robust to orientation variances, are used in the existing object detection methods to detect targets. The proposed orientation invariant YOLO (OIYOLO) detector can effectively deal with the bird’s eye viewpoint images where the orientation angles of the objects are arbitrary. In order to estimate the rotated angle of objects, we design a new angle loss function. Therefore, the training of OIYOLO forces the network to learn the annotated orientation angle of objects, making OIYOLO orientation invariances. The proposed approach that predicts OBB can be applied in other detection frameworks. In additional, to evaluate the proposed OIYOLO detector, we create an UAV-DAHUA datasets that annotated with objects locations, scales and orientation angles accurately. Extensive experiments conducted on UAV-DAHUA and DOTA datasets demonstrate that OIYOLO achieves state-of-the-art detection performance with high efficiency comparing with the baseline YOLO algorithms.

Most existing object detection methods use features such as color, shape, and contour. If there are no consistent features can be used, we need a new object detection method. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new method for estimating the probability that an object can be located for object detection and generating an object location probability map using only brightness in a gray image. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we applied it to gallbladder detection. Experimental results showed 98.02% success rate for gallbladder detection in ultrasonogram. Therefore, the proposed method accurately estimates the object location probability and effectively detected gallbladder.

Hackers on the Internet usually send attacking packets using compromised hosts, called stepping-stones, in order to avoid being detected and caught. With stepping-stone attacks, an intruder remotely logins these stepping-stones using programs like SSH or telnet, uses a chain of Internet hosts as relay machines, and then sends the attacking packets. A great number of detection approaches have been developed for stepping-stone intrusion (SSI) in the literature. Many of these existing detection methods worked effectively only when session manipulation by intruders is not present. When the session is manipulated by attackers, there are few known effective detection methods for SSI. It is important to know whether a detection algorithm for SSI is resistant on session manipulation by attackers. For session manipulation with chaff perturbation, software tools such as Scapy can be used to inject meaningless packets into a data stream. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no existing effective tools or efficient algorithms to produce time-jittered network traffic that can be used to test whether an SSI detection method is resistant on intruders’ time-jittering manipulation. In this paper, we propose a framework to test resistency of detection algorithms for SSI on time-jittering manipulation. Our proposed framework can be used to test whether an existing or new SSI detection method is resistant on session manipulation by intruders with time-jittering.
