Functional performance of existing concrete pavement is necessarily improved to maintain the low tire-pavement noise and the long-term skid resistance. Thus, exposed aggregate concrete overlay is introduced since these high functional performances are expected. Its surface texture requires the removal of cement mortar to expose the aggregates. This technique results a durable surface texture and an effective surface drainage through the random shape of aggregates. In Korea, concrete overlay is allowed to construct between 200 and 400 meters per day. This concrete amount is insufficient to use batch plant. Therefore, mobile mixer is employed to supply a consistent quality and on-time production. In addition, surface texture of this overlay method is significantly related to the reduction of tire-pavement noise. Accordingly, outcome of surface texture should be validated in the real field construction. This study intended to verify the constructability of exposed aggregate concrete overlay using mobile mixer for concrete production and deck finisher for concrete placement to acquire the surface texture and structural strengths. Surface texture and concrete strengths from mock-up and laboratory tests were measured and compared with design criteria. This research indicated that the suggested equipment and construction procedure can efficiently maintain the required surface texture of EACO for low tire-pavement noise and the adequate strengths for early traffic opening.

AbstractResection and reconstruction of midface involve complex ablative and reconstructive tools in head and oncology and maxillofacial prosthodontics. This region is extraordinarily important for long-term aesthetic and functional performance. From a reconstructive standpoint, this region has always been known to present challenges to a reconstructive surgeon due to the complex three-dimensional anatomy, the variable defects created, combination of the medical and dental functionalities, and the distance from reliable donor vessels for free tissue transfer. Another challenge one faces is the unique features of each individual resection defect as well as individual patient factors making each preoperative planning session and reconstruction unique. Understanding the long-term effects on speech, swallowing, and vision, one should routinely utilize a multidisciplinary approach to resection and reconstruction, including head and neck reconstructive surgeons, prosthodontists, speech language pathologists, oculoplastic surgeons, dentists, and/or craniofacial teams as indicated and with each practice pattern. With this in mind, we present our planning and reconstructive algorithm in midface reconstruction, including a dedicated focus on dental rehabilitation via custom presurgical planning.

Agri-environmental indicators such as nutrient balance may play a key role in soil and water quality monitoring, although short-term experiments might be unable to capture the sustainability of cropping systems. Therefore, the objectives of this study are: (i) to evaluate the reliability of long-term experimental N and P balance estimates to predict real field (RF) (i.e., short-term transitory) conditions; and (ii) to compare the sustainability of short- and long-term experiments. The LTE-based predictions showed that crops are generally over-fertilised in RF conditions, particularly maize. Nutrient balance predictions based on the LTE data tended to be more optimistic than those observed under RF conditions, which are often characterised by lower outputs; in particular, 13, 44, and 47% lower yields were observed for winter wheat, maize, and soybean, respectively, under organic management. The graphical evaluation of N and P use efficiency demonstrated the benefit of adopting crop rotation practices and the risk of nutrient loss when liquid organic fertiliser was applied on a long-term basis. In conclusion, LTE predictions may depend upon specific RF conditions, representing potential N and P use efficiencies that, in RF, may be reduced by crop yield-limiting factors and the specific implemented crop sequence.

Trends in the design and technology of power semiconductor devices are discussed on the threshold of the year 2015. Well established silicon technologies continue to occupy most of applications thanks to the maturity of switches like MOSFET, IGBT, IGCT and PCT. Silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) are striving to take over that of the silicon. The most relevant SiC device is the MPS (JBS) diode, followed by MOSFET and JFET. GaN devices are represented by lateral HEMT. While the long term reliability of silicon devices is well trusted, the SiC MOSFETs and GaN HEMTs are struggling to achieve a similar confidence. Two order higher cost of SiC equivalent functional performance at device level limits their application to specific cases, but their number is growing. Next five years will therefore see the co-existence of these technologies. Silicon will continue to occupy most of applications and dominate the high-power sector. The wide bandgap devices will expand mainly in the 600 - 1200 V range and dominate the research regardless of the voltage class.

Abstract Functional performance measures (grip strength, Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), and 3-meter gait speed) represent underlying disease progression and predict mortality. However, there is little information regarding whether these measures assessed at 2-months post-hip fracture predict long-term mortality (10-year follow-up). To address this gap, a longitudinal analysis of Baltimore Hip Studies-7 cohort, with mortality verified by National Death Index, was conducted. Mean difference in 2-month functional performance measures (n=242, men n=121, female n=121) among those who survived and did not survive over 10 years was determined using t-test. Prediction of mortality by these measures, overall and by sex, was estimated using cox proportional hazard models, for which Hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated. We found that, gait speed [0.47(standard deviation,SD=0.39) versus 0.31(SD=0.27)] and SPPB score [4.89(SD=3.31) versus 2.83(SD=2.24)] were significantly higher at 2 months among those surviving compared to those who did not. Adjusting for covariates, functional performance predicted long-term mortality in men and women. Increase in gait speed by 0.1m/s predicted 15% decrease in mortality for men [HR=0.85(0.55-0.96)] and 17% for women [HR=0.83 (0.74-0.93)]. Increase in SPPB by 1 unit predicted decrease in mortality by 14% for men [HR=0.86(0.77-0.95)] and 17% for women [HR=0.83(0.74-0.93). Increase in grip strength by 1 kg predicted 5% decrease in mortality for men [HR=0.94(0.92-0.97)] and 9% for women [HR=0.90(0.86-0.95)]. Functional performance measured at 2-months post-hip fracture predicted long-term mortality. Those with poor functional performance at 2-months can be referred for further assessment to optimize their care to promote survival.

The exposed aggregate pavement technology for construction of concrete highways is used in European countries, including Poland, mostly for heavy trafficked roads. It is mainly a two-lift slip-form technology with a special treatment of the top surface after the final smoothing operation. This is a demanding technology that leaves a little margin for mistakes. When properly done the pavement layer with exposed aggregates ensures designed skid resistance for vehicle wheels even in adverse weather conditions without excessive traffic noise. The challenge is to provide its cost-effective long term performance including both the adequate roughness and the desired smoothness of the pavement. The paper presents tools and methods for construction quality assurance specific for exposed aggregate concrete pavements. Required monitoring of the stability of concrete mix properties is discussed. The importance of concrete curing is analyzed in respect to the long term durability in wet-freeze regions with heavy use of deicing salts. Macrotexture assessment at the early stage of pavement construction is seen as the key factor for assurance of the proper skidding resistance. Local evaluation of smoothness is also a useful approach to assure the target IRI. Examples of quality assurance efforts applied on concrete highways recently constructed in Poland are presented.

Health monitoring is crucial for the survival of ill and premature infants admitted at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in a hospital. The reliability and comfort of monitoring systems will impact on the quality of life and long-term health prospects of the neonates. This chapter presents the ongoing design work of a smart jacket for improving comfort of neonatal monitoring. Textile sensors, a reflectance pulse oximeter, and a wearable temperature sensor are developed to be embedded into the smart jacket. The authors also report a power supply and wireless communication system developed for the smart jacket. Sensor locations, materials, and appearance are designed to optimize the functionality, patient comfort and the possibilities for aesthetic features. Prototypes are presented for demonstrating the design concept, and experimental results for functional performance are shown from the tests on premature babies at the NICU of Máxima Medical Centre (MMC) in Veldhoven, the Netherlands.

Multimorbidity is defined as any combination of a chronic disease with at least one other acute or chronic disease or biopsychosocial or somatic risk factor. Old age is a leading risk factor for multimorbidity. It has a negative impact on short- and long-term prognosis, patients’ cognitive and functional performance, self-care, independence, and quality of life. It substantially influences patients’ clinical management and increases healthcare-related costs. There is a great variety of clinical measures to assess multimorbidity; some are presented in this chapter. Despite its high prevalence in older adults, clinical guidelines for physicians managing patients with multimorbidity are underdeveloped and insufficient.

To thoroughly explore the relationship between concrete pavement texture characteristics and tire/pavement noise of grooving concrete pavement, the surface texture, i.e., roughness, macrotexture, and microtexture, was investigated in numerous highway pavements. The On-Board Sound Intensity (OBSI) method was used to test the pavement/tire noise. The statistical correlation between concrete pavement texture characteristics and tire/pavement noise was quantitatively described by two correlation analysis methods for highway concrete pavement: origin of linear regression and the Pearson two-sided test method. The results indicate that the effect of pavement roughness on tire/pavement noise is significant, while the noise level is minor for the flat pavement. The macro texture depth also has a marked impact on the tire/pavement noise. In addition, a large grooving depth of concrete pavement could cause a high tire/pavement noise level; however, there is no clear correlation between side-way force coefficient (SFC) and tire/pavement noise.
