One advantage of scaling vectors over a single scaling function is the compatibility of symmetry and orthogonality. This paper investigates the relationship between symmetry, vanishing moments, orthogonality, and support length for a scaling vectorΦ. Some general results on scaling vectors and vanishing moments are developed, as well as some necessary conditions for the symbol entries of a scaling vector with both symmetry and orthogonality. If orthogonal scaling vectorΦhas some kind of symmetry and a given number of vanishing moments, we can characterize the type of symmetry forΦ, give some information about the form of the symbolP(z), and place some bounds on the support of eachϕi. We then construct anL2(ℝ)orthogonal, symmetric scaling vector with one vanishing moment having minimal support.

Spline function is of very great interest in field of wavelets due to its compactness and smoothness property. As splines have specific formulae in both time and frequency domain, it greatly facilitates their manipulation. We have given a simple procedure to generate compactly supported orthogonal scaling function for higher order B-splines in our previous work. Here we determine the maximum vanishing moments of the formed spline wavelet as established by the new refinable function using sum rule order method.

AbstractIn this paper we introduce new function spaces which we call anisotropic hyperbolic Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. Their definition is based on a hyperbolic Littlewood-Paley analysis involving an anisotropy vector only occurring in the smoothness weights. Such spaces provide a general and natural setting in order to understand what kind of anisotropic smoothness can be described using hyperbolic wavelets (in the literature also sometimes called tensor-product wavelets), a wavelet class which hitherto has been mainly used to characterize spaces of dominating mixed smoothness. A centerpiece of our present work are characterizations of these new spaces based on the hyperbolic wavelet transform. Hereby we treat both, the standard approach using wavelet systems equipped with sufficient smoothness, decay, and vanishing moments, but also the very simple and basic hyperbolic Haar system. The second major question we pursue is the relationship between the novel hyperbolic spaces and the classical anisotropic Besov–Lizorkin-Triebel scales. As our results show, in general, both approaches to resolve an anisotropy do not coincide. However, in the Sobolev range this is the case, providing a link to apply the newly obtained hyperbolic wavelet characterizations to the classical setting. In particular, this allows for detecting classical anisotropies via the coefficients of a universal hyperbolic wavelet basis, without the need of adaption of the basis or a-priori knowledge on the anisotropy.

The connection that Hobbes makes between reason, method, and science renders reason a faculty that is not only natural but also acquired and even somewhat exclusive. This idea might pose a serious problem to Hobbes’s political theory, as it relies heavily on the successful use of reason. This problem is demonstrated in Hobbes’s account of the laws of nature, for which some equality in human reason is clearly needed, but Hobbes is not explicit about the relationship between that and the more advanced form of reason that eventually leads to science. This article suggests that Hobbes’s account of reason is developmental. The seed of natural reason is common to everyone, and is sufficient for the establishment of the commonwealth. Thereafter, peace and leisure provide the necessary conditions for developing the rational skill, that is, fulfilling the human potential for rationality. Consequently, under the right circumstances, knowledge and science are expected to progress dramatically for the benefit of society, an open-ended vision which Hobbes nevertheless leaves implicit. Following Hobbes’s account of reason and philosophy closely can therefore show that he might have had great hopes for humankind, and that in this sense he was a key member of an English Enlightenment.

In this paper, under a mild condition, the construction of compactly supported [Formula: see text]-wavelets is obtained. Wavelets inherit the symmetry of the corresponding scaling function and satisfy the vanishing moment condition originating in the symbols of the scaling function. An example is also given to demonstrate the general theory.

We investigate the sub-Gaussian property for almost surely bounded random variables. If sub-Gaussianity per se is de facto ensured by the bounded support of said random variables, then exciting research avenues remain open. Among these questions is how to characterize the optimal sub-Gaussian proxy variance? Another question is how to characterize strict sub-Gaussianity, defined by a proxy variance equal to the (standard) variance? We address the questions in proposing conditions based on the study of functions variations. A particular focus is given to the relationship between strict sub-Gaussianity and symmetry of the distribution. In particular, we demonstrate that symmetry is neither sufficient nor necessary for strict sub-Gaussianity. In contrast, simple necessary conditions on the one hand, and simple sufficient conditions on the other hand, for strict sub-Gaussianity are provided. These results are illustrated via various applications to a number of bounded random variables, including Bernoulli, beta, binomial, Kumaraswamy, triangular, and uniform distributions.

This article examines how P.E.N., an organisation born in imperial Britain, endeavoured in some cases and floundered in others to create conditions for collaboration between Indian and British writers. Drawing on the P.E.N. archives at the Harry Ransom Center (HRC), I examine communication among and between Indian and British writers in P.E.N.'s orbit during the World War II era and leading up to the Indian Independence Act of 1947. As a forum for collaboration among writers internationally not only to develop writing and editing projects together, but also to forge a unifying conception for the modern era of the relationship between literature and political freedom, P.E.N. aimed to create opportunities for exchange among Indian and British writers. Analysing Indian writers' articulation of the necessary conditions for cross-imperial collaboration, I consider how mutuality was compromised under political conditions of imperialism hinging on hierarchal notions of culture.

In the present paper is analyzed the relationship between Kant's theses concerning unknowability and non-spatiotemporality of things in themselves. First of all, it is argued that even by taking for granted that the Unknowability Thesis does not contradict the Non-Spatiotemporality Thesis, because the former can be thought as a consequence of the latter, this is not enough to avoid another problem, namely, that the Non-Spatiotemporality Thesis is not sufficient to abolish the possibility of thinking consistently of space and time as empirical or material. It is also remembered that this point has already been partially envisaged for the first time by H.A. Pistorius (and later by A. Trendelenburg) and raised as the objection of the "third possibility" or "neglected alternative." Furthermore, it is maintained that although Kant tries to eliminate this possibility in the Metaphysical Expositions of Space and Time (but not in the Antinomies), by attempting to prove that space and time are only formal necessary conditions of sensibility, he cannot do it successfully. Hereafter it is argued that his circumstance is not due to the above objection itself, but to another difficulty that can only be grasped through the analysis of Kant's main argument in the Metaphysical Expositions of Transcendental Aesthetic. Ultimately, in order to show this difficulty, it is argued first that insofar as the Non-spatiotemporality Thesis supposes the validity of the Singularity Thesis, and this supposes the validity of the Apriority Thesis, the whole force of proof reposes on this latter. Secondly, it is shown that, despite his effort, Kant could not justify satisfactorily his claim to the formal apriority of space and time because of his failure to demonstrate necessarily the Apriority Thesis.

The structural properties of LM-g splines are investigated by optimization and optimal control theory. The continuity and structure of LM-g splines are derived by using a class of necessary conditions with state constraints of optimal control and the relationship between LM-g interpolating splines and the corresponding L-g interpolating splines. This work provides a new method for further exploration of LM-g interpolating splines and its applications in the optimal control.

In this paper I want to do the following things. First I want to show that in the part of the Theaetetus where the relationship between knowledge and perception is examined, the concept of knowledge that is in question is very clearly characterized. We are left in no doubt as to what is to count as knowing. Secondly I want to unravel in some detail the case that Socrates puts on Protagoras’ behalf where he draws on what Protagoras actually wrote (151 E-152C); as opposed to what he may have taught secretly to his pupils (152C-160D). Thirdly I wish to argue that if we let the dialogue speak for itself, it is manifest that this case put up on Protagoras’ behalf at 151 E-152C is not overthrown; it is not even shaken.In that part of the dialogue (151 D-186E) where the question is under examination whether or not knowledge and perception are the same, Socrates uses an idealized concept of knowledge. That is, he restricts the use of the word by setting down what he will consider to be the essential characteristics of knowledge, the sufficient and necessary conditions of its being instantiated. An excellent piece of philosophical procedure.
