We investigated how standard speech coders, currently used in modern communication systems, affect the quality of the speech of persons who have common speech and voice disorders. Three standardized speech coders (GSM 6.10 RPELTP, FS1016 CELP, and FS1015 LPC) and two speech coders based on subband processing were evaluated for their performance. Coder effects were assessed by measuring the quality of speech samples both before and after processing by the speech coders. Speech quality was rated by 10 listeners with normal hearing on 28 different scales representing pitch and loudness changes, speech rate, laryngeal and resonatory dysfunction, and coder-induced distortions. Results showed that (a) nine scale items were consistently and reliably rated by the listeners; (b) all coders degraded speech quality on these nine scales, with the GSM and CELP coders providing the better quality speech; and (c) interactions between coders and individual voices did occur on several voice quality scales.

This article reviews the literature on the efficacy of treatment for voice disorders primarily using studies published in peer-reviewed journals. Voice disorders are defined, their frequency of occurrence across the life span is reported, and their impact on the lives of individuals with voice disorders is documented. The goal of voice treatment is to maximize vocal effectiveness given the existing disorder and to reduce the handicapping effect of the voice problem. Voice treatment may be (a) the preferred treatment to resolve the voice disorder when medical (surgical or pharmacological) treatments are not indicated; (b) the initial treatment in cases where medical treatment appears indicated; it may obviate the need for medical treatment; (c) completed before and after surgical treatment to maximize long-term post-surgical voice; and (d) a preventative treatment to preserve vocal health. Experimental and clinical data are reviewed that support these roles applied to various disorder types: (a) vocal misuse, hyperfunction and muscular imbalance (frequently resulting in edema, vocal nodules, polyps or contact ulcers); (b) medical or physical conditions (e.g., laryngeal nerve trauma, Parkinson disease); and (c) psychogenic disorders (e.g., conversion reactions, personality disorders). Directions for future research are suggested which maximize clinical outcomes and scientific rigor to enhance knowledge on the efficacy of voice treatment.

Background: Previous studies have documented the effectiveness of voice therapy in terms of voice quality outcomes rather than quality of life outcomes. Objective: To compare the quality of life among patients with voice disorders, before and after voice therapy. Methods: Thirty-six patients with voice disorders who visited the Speech Clinic at Ramathibodi Hospital from March 2013 to January 2015 were enrolled. Thirty minutes per session within 10 weeks period of voice therapy program were used. The voice therapy approaches included direct and indirect therapy. The outcomes of this study were measured using Dr. Speech software version 5 for acoustic analysis and the Voice Handicap Index in Thai version for quality of life. Data was analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics (Paired t test). Results: The total participants were 36 patients with a mean age of 51.31 years. They were divided to 4 groups according to the causes of voice disorders that were 18 patients for structural cause, 8 patients for functional cause, 6 patients for neurological cause, and 4 patients for inflammatory cause. The results for both voice quality and quality of life after voice therapy improved and showed statistically significant differences (P < .05). The patients with all causes of voice disorders were statistically significant differences in total the Voice Handicap Index scores (P < .05). Moreover the structural causes group exhibited statistically significant differences in all subscales (P < .05) but the others causes groups were not statistically significant differences in emotional subscale for functional causes, physical subscale for neurological causes, and functional subscale for inflammatory cause (P > .05) Conclusions: Voice therapy might be an effective treatment to decrease the severity of voice disorders in role of voice quality and quality of life, especially voice disorders from structural causes.

Aim. To determine the effect of the addition of thyme and rosemary, as well as walnut on the quality characteristics of the resulting ham. Materials and Methods. Low-fat pork (GOST 31476-2012), purchased at a local meat processing plant, dried thyme (GOST 21816-89), dried rosemary, walnuts (GOST 32874-2014) were used for the preparation of ham samples. The production of the studied ham samples was carried out in accordance with the current regulatory and technical documentation (GOST 31790-2012 "Boiled pork products. Technical specifications"). Sampling and preparation of samples for laboratory tests was carried out according to a single method in accordance with the requirements of GOST R 51447-99 (ISO 3100-1-91). The organoleptic parameters were determined according to the requirements of GOST 9959-91; GOST R 53159-2008; GOST R 53161-2008. The mass fraction of fat was determined according to GOST 23042-86; protein-according to GOST 25011-81; energy value-by the calculated method. Results. The pH value in the ham was significantly reduced with the addition of thyme and rosemary compared to the control before and after storage. Ham, in the formulation of which rosemary and thyme powder was introduced, had the highest mass fraction of protein – 27.5%, which is 0.8 and 2.1% more than in the control and II experimental samples with the addition of nuts, respectively. The inclusion of walnuts in the recipe significantly affected the mass fraction of fat in the II experimental sample – 5.7%, which is 2.5 and 0.7% more than in the control and I experimental samples, respectively. The energy value of the I prototype was the highest and amounted to 159.25 kcal per 100 g, which is respectively more than in the control and II prototype by 20.02 and 2.1 kcal. Conclusion. The addition of thyme and rosemary significantly affected the color of the ham, but at the same time increased the functional and technological properties, nutritional and biological value of the finished product. Adding walnuts to the ham recipe gave it a nutty taste. Thus, the resulting products have a high-energy value and are competitive.

Background: The aim of this study was to present a rehabilitation program of occupational voice disorders for teachers, conducted in the form of health resort stays, and evaluate its effectiveness depending on job seniority. Methods: The study included 420 teachers who participated in a complex vocal prophylactic and rehabilitation program carried out during a 24-day stay at a health resort hospital. Employment time varied from 4 to 45 years (mean 28.3 years). The participants were divided into three groups: employment time < 21 years (57 teachers), 21–30 years (182 teachers) and > 30 years (181 teachers). All of the subjects underwent maximum phonation time assessment as well as jitter, shimmer and NHR (noise to harmonic ratio) parameters assessment before and after the program; they also underwent perceptual evaluation using the GRBAS scale and voice self-assessment using the VHI-30 scale. Results: The perceptual evaluation using the GRBAS scale and self-report measures of voice function assessed using the VHI scale revealed improvement (p < 0.001). The parameters of jitter, shimmer and NHR improved significantly: jitter p < 0.001, shimmer p < 0.001 and NHR p < 0.003. Maximum phonation time increased slightly but significantly (p < 0.001). For all of the studied groups regardless of their employment time, maximum phonation time increased (p < 0.001). Initially, the lowest values of maximum phonation time were observed in teachers with longer job seniority, which improved after the rehabilitation but remained <15 s. Conclusions: Voice care for teachers is crucial regardless of their job seniority. Early prophylaxis for voice disorders is effective, as the results of rehabilitation are better in teachers with a shorter employment time.

Canadian beef is quality graded to characterize the potential eating quality of the cooked product. Instrumental meat quality characteristics of 48 m. longissimus thoracis (LT, rib eye) from four Canadian beef grades (Canada A, AA, AAA, and Prime, n = 12) before and after an additional 14-d aging were compared using a split plot design with grade, aging, and their interaction as fixed sources of variation. Mean percentage intramuscular fat was greatest in Canada Prime muscle and least in Canada A and AA muscles (P < 0.0001), whereas mean percentage drip loss was lower in Canada Prime muscle than in muscle from all other grades (P = 0.0348). Canada Prime and AAA muscles were redder and yellower than muscles from other grades even after aging (P < 0.03), which may be associated with increased fat content and indicative of accelerated myoglobin oxidation and increased myoglobin oxygenation. Shear force was not different among the Canada grades, although the differences between Canada AA cooked beef LT and that of Canada Prime and AAA carcasses approached significance (P = 0.0993). Results indicated that Canada quality grades did not differentiate beef on cooked product tenderness, substantiating that muscle compositional characteristics alone define beef grade advantages.

Spatiotemporal water quality tendencies before and after total maximum daily load (TMDL) implementation in the Hangang basin were analyzed to determine the water quality improvement resulting from the TMDL policy. The periodicities of water quality indicators were also analyzed and water quality characteristics corresponding to different unit watershed units were identified in terms of pollution source. Considering five water quality indicators, including biochemical oxygen demand and total phosphorus, it was observed that water quality indicator concentrations were low in the upstream areas of the Bukhangang and Namhangang watersheds. However, they were high between the downstream areas of the Namhangang watershed and the Imjingang watershed and in the Hangang downstream and Jinwicheon watersheds. Additionally, the concentrations of water quality indicators in most of the unit watersheds where TMDL had been implemented decreased after TMDL implementation. However, increasing tendencies in the concentrations of water quality indicators continued to be observed in some of the watershed units in the upstream areas of the Bukhangang and Namhangang watersheds, possibly because these watersheds are affected by nonpoint source pollution owing to rainfall. Therefore, in the future, it would be necessary to implement policies that take these findings into consideration.
