AbstractThe present study was carried out to describe the reproductive system of a single adult female wolf, including the uterine horns, cervix, ovaries and follicles. The cumulus oocytes complexes (COCs) and oocytes were also examined. The results showed that the size of each ovary was about 9 × 6 mm with an average of weight of 461.3 mg. The uterus was Y-shaped, and the length of each uterine horn was 14 cm. The distance from the cervix to the bifurcation of the uterine horns was also 14 cm. The left ovary had two large follicles on the surface with a diameter more than 4 mm, while the right ovary had no protuberant follicles. The ovaries were covered with a lot of fat, and were well developed. The COCs derived from the antral follicles were dark, and the nuded oocytes had a dark cytoplasm. The diameter of the oocytes removed from the antral follicles was 116.8 μm on average. The ovaries had a smooth surface and all the follicles were under the surface except for two big follicles on the left ovary. Histological examination of the ovaries by haematoxylin and eosin staining demonstrated that the primordial, primary, preantral and antral follicles were scattered in the cortex, the medulla was abundant with blood vessels. This study preliminarily reveals the features of the wolf reproductive system and the structure of its oocytes and ovaries, which might be indicative for further study and the protection of the species.

ABSTRACT The decidual cell reaction (DCR) was studied in a total of 60 rats. Pseudopregnancy was induced during vaginal (late) oestrus, either by cervical glass rod stimulation or by daily injections of 1 mg of a lactogenic hormone (LGH) preparation. The antimesometrial aspect of the right uterine horn was traumatized on day 4 of pseudopregnancy. All animals of both groups reacted with massive and almost identical deciduoma formation, as measured by dry fat free tissue (DFFT) and histological examination.

Goal. Goat breeding is a promising branch of animal husbandry, which is rapidly developing. The scientific literature has little information about the essential features and differences in the structure of the genital apparatus of goats. With the increase in the number of livestock and selection work in goat breeding, knowledge of the characteristics of the reproductive system is of great importance. Due to lack of knowledge of the structure of the reproductive organs of small cattle, the effectiveness of artificial insemination decreases and inefficient sperm of producers is used, since the complex structure of the cervix of the goat is an obstacle in the artificial introduction of sperm. Therefore, considering the need for further introduction of the method of artificial insemination into practice of goat breeding, the study of the peculiarities of the structure of the internal genital organs of goats is timely and necessary. Materials and methods.The study of anatomical features of the structure of the internal genital organs of goats was carried out on animals of the Zaanen breed, imported into the village. Galaiki Tarashchansky district of the Kiev region from Latvia. The material for study was the genitals obtained from goats aged 6-7 years. After the slaughter and bleeding, the genitals were separated into goats. They were then placed in an enameled cuvette and measured with a measuring tape, ruler and caliper. The linear dimensions of the ovaries, the diameter and length of the uterine horns according to the large curvature, the length of the uterine body, the length and diameter of the cervix, the number and structural features of the folds of its mucous membrane, the amount of caruncle, their height and diameter were measured. As mentioned earlier, the development of anatomical and physiological basis for artificial insemination of small ruminant animals was carried out mainly on sheep. Therefore, we compared the size of the ovaries, oviducts and uterus in goats of the Zaanen breed of Latvian selection and, according to the literature, the results of studies of similar sheep organs were analyzed. As a result of the studies of the morphological parameters of the genitalia of the goats, the following data were obtained: the mass of the left ovary – 0,6 ± 0,06 g, the right – 1,1 ± 0,04 g: the length of the left ovary – 2,0 ± 0,06 Cm, the length of the right – 2,3 ± 0,04 cm. The length of the left oviduct was – 14,2 ± 0,16 cm, and the right – 14,4 ± 0,15 cm. Accordingly, the length of the left horn of the uterus was – 13,7 ± 0,63 cm, the right – 12.2 ± 0,75 cm. The diameter of the left horn of the uterus is – 2.3 ± 0,07 cm, the right horn of the uterus is – 2,8 ± 0,08 cm. The morphological parameters of the unpaired genitals of goats were as follows: The length of the uterus body was – 1,8 ± 0,15 cm, the cervix was – 5,9 ± 0,29 cm, the cervix diameter was – 1,8 ± 0,08 cm; the number of folds in the cervix is – 4,7 ± 0,50. The height of the caruncle is – 0,5 ± 0,06 cm, their diameter is – 0,7 ± 0,10 cm, the amount of caruncle is – 96,5 ± 1,70, the area of the caruncle is on average – 0,4 ± 0,10 cm2. Conclusions. As a result of the carried out researches the anatomical and morphometric characteristics of internal sexual organs of goats are given. These data make it possible to expand and supplement knowledge on the morphology of the reproductive system of farm animals, which must be taken into account in artificial insemination of goats. The data obtained by us are somewhat different from the results of the studies of other authors, but do not contradict them.

A case of unilateral hypoplasia and atresia of the uterus horn was described in 19 months old gilt. After repeated returns and 9, in total, unsuccessful artificial inseminations, during and after the third oestrus, the gilt was slaughtered and the right horn of the uterus was found to be "blind" at the level of its borders with the uterus body. It contained 150ml of fluid and was about half the length of the left horn (110cm vs. 190cm). Diffused and welloutlined cysts were observed in both horns of the uterus. Histological examination revealed in the endometrium, edema with abundant loose cellular stroma that surrounded numerous hypoplastic glands and hyperaemic blood vessels with thick walls. It is suggested that the production of PGF2a by the hypoplastic and "blind" horn of the uterus interrupted the pregnancy in the left horn.

AbstractHistological examination of the gonads showed that spermatogenesis occurs in every male R. rhinobatos collected in autumn and winter months of the year. The testis was composed of lobes having numerous spermatocysts in a dorsoventral zonated arrangement. Present results suggest that since R. rhinobatos have a cystic mode of spermatogenesis it can be used as a model for biomedical and toxicological studies. Eight stages of maturation for females and seven stages of maturation for males were identified. Moreover, vitellogenic oocytes were consistently found in every female collected during the summer months. In vitellogenic oocytes, yolk is present as pleomorphic droplets and very often; small yolk droplets have a crystalline configuration. These data suggest that both sexes are reproductively active at different times of the year. Both, the right ovary/testis and the left ovary/testis were functional. Ripe oocytes in the ovaries were usually symmetrically distributed. The population consisted of aplacental viviparous individuals with lecithotrophic embryo development. Although, sex ratios of R. rhinobatos were not significantly different from the expected 1:1 ratio (p>0.05), slightly female biased sex ration were recorded.

Background: Shear wave electrography (SWE) is a novel non-invasive imaging technique which demonstrate tissue elasticity. Recent research evaluating the elasticity properties of normal and pathological tissues emphasize the diagnostic importance of this technique. Aims: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which is characterized by menstrual irregularity, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic overgrowth, may cause infertility. The aim of this study was to evaluate the elasticity of ovaries in patients with PCOS using SWE. Methods: 66 patients diagnosed with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria (PCOS = group I) and 72 patients with non-PCOS (Control = group II), were included in the study. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the participants were recorded. Ovarian elasticity was assessed in all patients with SWE, and speed values were obtained from the ovaries. The elasticity of the ovaries was compared between the two groups. Results: While there were statistically significant differences between the groups in body mass index (BMI), right and left ovarian volumes, luteinizing hormone and testosterone levels (p<0.05), no significant differences were found between groups I and II in the velocity (for the right ovary 3.89±1.81 vs. 2.93±0.72, p=0.301; for the left ovary 2.88±0.65 vs. 2.95±0.80, p=0.577) and elastography (for the right ovary 36.62±17.78 vs. 36.79±14.32, p=0.3952; for the left ovary 36.56±14.15 vs. 36.26±15.10, p=0.903) values, respectively. Conclusion: We could not obtain different velocity and elastography values from the ovaries of the patients with PCOS using SWE. Therefore, further large-scale studies are needed to elucidate this issue.

Summary Reports of Pearsonema plica and Eucoleus böhmi infections in wolves (Canis lupus) in Europe are limited and data on associated lesions are lacking. In the present study urinary bladders, nasal turbinates and faecal samples from 8 necropsied wolves were examined for P. plica and E. böhmi infections and associated lesions. P. plica was identified in the bladder of four wolves. At histological examination, follicular chronic cystitis and eosinophilic cystitis were found. E. böhmi nematodes and eggs were identified from the nasal turbinates and rectal faecal samples of three wolves. Worms and eggs were found embedded in the mucosa among the nasal bone laminae. Two wolves were found coinfected by P. plica and E. böhmi. This is the first report of P. plica and E. böhmi infections in wolves from Italy and the first description of pathological lesions associated with P. plica infection in wolves.

A breeding male Gray Wolf, Canis lupus, equipped with a GPS collar was documented going to the den site of another Gray Wolf pack. This trip was coincident with an attack on the den of the other pack and the occurrence of a dead and partially consumed Gray Wolf pup at the same location. We present two possible explanations - interspecific predation and non-parental infanticide - to account for this observation. Because the Gray Wolf with the GPS collar and his mate were first-time breeders and were attempting to establish a territory space of their own, we speculate that, based on the available evidence, this observation most likely represents a case of non-parental infanticide that fits the predictions of the resource competition hypothesis.
