Towards an Integrated Theology of Youth

Abstract This article summarises eight theological perspectives on youth and young people. Young people are variously seen as (1) sinful creatures in need of redemption; (2) gifts of God and sources of joy; (3) developing beings in need of guidance and instruction; (4) open to conversion; (5) vulnerable to exploitation; (6) fully human, made in God’s image; (7) a prophetic presence; and (8) a prophetic voice. Rather than simply affirm all 8 perspectives as important, an integrated theological perspective on youth views young people within the distinctive features of their created reality, with particular strengths and assets along with distinct needs and deficits, to be fully capable as bearers of the divine image, and with emerging capability as social agents.

This last chapter takes a more detailed look at and combines some of the main contributions that have been made in the different chapters comprising this book. The text is divided into three sections. The first advocates the need for a socio-educational approach based on a positive and updated view of youth. The second argues in favour of a pedagogy of choice to accompany young people in their growth and provide them with the tools and environment for them to be able to decide and act according to their own life project within the framework of the community. And the third concludes that there is a need for public policies to improve their response and attention to young people through joint and shared goals, including both social agents and young people in this process.

Access to careers education for young people has been in decline under the Conservative–Liberal Democrat Coalition Government due to changes in regulations and funding. Therefore it has become vital to deliver the commitments made in the Youth Contract to provide careers advice through Jobcentre Plus advisers. At the same time, other policy changes have put Jobcentre Plus advisers increasingly in the role of benefit enforcers. This paper explores how these two roles interact with each other and influence the experience of young people trying to access careers advice. We propose a framework that would encourage the development of a Jobcentre Plus fit for the purpose of the Youth Contract.


Resumen El presente artículo presenta algunos de los resultados obtenidos en dos intervenciones con jóvenes de escuelas secundarias públicas, ubicadas en la Ciudad de México y en el Estado de México. A partir del diagnóstico realizado con observación participante, entrevistas y la sistematización de talleres; se aplicó una intervención educativa desde la propuesta teórico metodológica que combina el enfoque de juventudes y la educación para la paz y derechos humanos. De ambas intervenciones, resalta la necesidad de tender puentes dialógicos como un elemento central para la formación de autonomía en jóvenes desde el dispositivo escolar. A modo de conclusión se proponen algunos elementos para la construcción de autonomía de los sujetos jóvenes, quienes requieren ser reconocidos como agentes sociales con capacidad de transformar de su entorno como elemento central para la dignificación y construcción de paz en los espacios escolares. Abstract This article presents some results obtained in two interventions with students in two Public High Schools located in Mexico City and in Mexico State. Based on the diagnosis made with active observation, interviews and the systematization of workshops; an educational intervention was applied from the theoretical-methodological proposal that combines the youth perspective, peace education and human rights approaches. Highlights on both interventions, the need to build dialogical bridges in schools as main autonomy construction element in young people training. Some elements are proposed as conclusion, for young people autonomy construction, who need to be recognized as social agents with the capacity to transform their environment as a central element for dignify and build-peace in schools. In this article, a comparative analysis of creative and innovative thinking in a similar and different way will be made. The peculiarities of creativity and the essence of innovation are considered to be brought up as an object of philosophical research. Within the framework of the theme, it is mentioned about how our young people can use the opportunities created in our country on a large scale, about the achievement of the goals, the pursuit of innovation, creative thinking consisting of creative processes in a specific way and the various methods used in the mobilization of its implementation and their practical opportunities. Also, analytical analysis of the characteristic aspects of innovative thinking was carried out.The essence and essence of creative and innovational thinking, its distinctive features are considered to be brought up as an object of philosophical research. The views on innovation and creative thinking were also analyzed comparatively. In particular, it is noted that the formation of creative and innovative thinking is a period demand as well as a social need.

Internationally, significant variation exists between the use and application of the term ‘NEET’ (not in education, employment or training) to define levels of economic and social exclusion among groups of young people. It depends on the situation, and/or the context in which the term is applied. The term draw attention to unacceptably high levels of youth unemployment and economic inactivity, as well as the scarring consequences this may have on young people’s lives. The use of the term ‘NEET’ has faced a number of international challenges, including the age cohort to which the term is applied. This varies from one organisation to another, and the specific target group assigned and the variability of meaning of the term ‘NEET ‘itself. This paper aims to provide a review of the shifting and changing age cohort included within the NEET category since its inception in the 1990s. The study utilises an Entity-Related Diagram to demonstrate the international variation that now exists. Recommendations are made in order to maximise the deployment of a standardised definition of NEET, in order to achieve some commonality of understanding about how we measure and define ‘NEEThood’, and crucially, in developing and applying policy responses to address their needs.

Characterizing historical cohorts as endowed with distinctive features arising from broad historical forces is useful for some analytic purposes but obscures important differences among individuals in a cohort as well as the openness to change. Today’s young people—the millennials—are stereotyped as uninterested in work and traditional political activity. We review research that illuminates the responsiveness of youth to occupational and civic opportunity and conclude that millennials can become the citizens needed to improve American civic life.

The way mathematics instruction accommodates the large technological changes sweeping society will profoundly affect the ability of young people to adjust to everyday life situations and perform efficiently in the skilled professions of the future. In particular, continued thoughtful attention must be given to the role of microcomputers in all aspects of the teaching of mathematics. Many significant issues in this area will need to be discussed and important decisions made in the months ahead. We need to set high expectations in these discussions and the decisions that follow from them. Settling for what can be done easily or selling short the talents of our students or our colleagues will be a mistake.
