Lepiotaceous fungi of West Bengal, India: the genus Chlorophyllum

The state West Bengal, India was thoroughly investigated and a total of ten specimens belonging to the genus Chlorophyllum was collected. Detailed morphological and molecular studies revealed that the collected specimens were distributed over three species among which two viz. Chlorophyllum hortense and C. molybdites were previously known from the region, and one, Chlorophyllum squamulosum sp. nov., is described herein as new to science. The new species is distinguished by its small plate-like squamules over the pileus coloured greyish brown to reddish brown or dark brown; truncate, hyaline basidiospores with a prominent germ-pore; relatively small (17–25 × 7.5–11.5 μm), clavate or spheropedunculate cheilocystidia; and a tightly packed hymeniderm type pileus covering. A comprehensive morphological description, field photographs of the basidiocarps, comparisons with phenotypically similar and phylogenetically related species and a phylogram showing the placement of each of the collected species are provided. Besides, earlier records of Chlorophyllum species from West Bengal as well as in India are consulted and information related to diversity of the genus in the country are discussed with notes on the previous records. An artificial dichotomous key is provided to aid in the identification of the presently available Chlorophyllum species in India.

Abstract: The West Bengal is a treasure house for macro-fungal diversity due to its varied geo-climatic conditions. Detailed macroscopic and microscopic characterization was made to identify the collected specimens. Altogether six species belonging to the family Xylariaceae (three species), Hypoxylaceae (one species), Ascobolaceae (one species) and Pyronemataceae (one species) were collected from different corners of the state. Literature survey revealed that all of the collected taxa represent their first detailed description and distributional record from the state. A comprehensive macro-morphological description, field photographs along with microscopic observations are provided. The outcome of the present study will enrich data related to the diversity of macrofungi from the state West Bengal.

A new species of Trogia (Marasmiaceae, Basidiomycota) is described from West Bengal, India. Analysis of the molecular sequence (nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region) data suggests that T. benghalesis is phylogenetically distinct from its closely related species. Comprehensive description based on macro- and microscopic characters, photographs and comparisons with morphologically similar and phylogenetically related species are provided.

In the present study, two new species of Nitzschia Hassall, Nitzschia pusilluhasta sp. nov. and Nitzschia australodesertorum sp. nov. are described from reservoirs in the state of São Paulo southeast Brazil. The morphology of the new species was analysed using light and electron microscopy. Nitzschia pusilluhasta is distinguished from morphologically related species by its valve outline, the shape of apices and fibulae, the absence of a gap between central fibulae, and the density of striae and areolae. Nitzschia australodesertorum differs from morphologically similar species in its valve outline, the shape of apices and fibulae, the presence of a gap between the central fibulae, and the density of fibulae and striae. The morphology and ecology of the new species are discussed and compared with morphologically related taxa. Information on the co-occurrence of other diatom species in the samples is also provided.

Kielmeyera ferruginosa, a new species of Calophyllaceae from the Atlantic Forest of southern Bahia, is here described and illustrated. The species is critically endangered and can be easily distinguished from other Kielmeyera species by the rusty coloration of the trunk and branches, orange-colored latex, and the occurrence in flooded areas. It differs from the other species of the section Prolifera by the leaves with secondary veins relatively more distant from each other and prominent on the abaxial surface. Diagnostic characters and the state of conservation of the new species are discussed, and an identification key for K. ferruginosa and related species from series Rupestres and Neglectae is provided.

Dendrocephalus thieryi nov. sp., discovered in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is described. The new species is defined by a unique morphology of its male frontal appendage and of the endopodites of the first four thoracopods. A dichotomous key to all known Dendrocephalus species based on male morphology is presented.

A new species of freshwater Amphipod, Gammarus topkarai sp. nov., collected from Ivriz Creek, Tarsus Province, South Anatolia, is described and illustrated. The new species belongs to Gammarus pulex-group and shows similar characteristic features with Gammarus agrarius G. S. Karaman, 1973. Absence of well developed dorsal elevations on the urosome segments, smaller body length and relatively lower endopod/exopod ratio of third uropod are the most obvious features differ from G. agrarius. A detailed morphological description and illustrations of new species are given and differences from related species are discussed. An updated identification key of Gammarus taxa reported from Turkey, up to date, was also presented.

A new species of Catasetum Rich. ex Kunth (Orchidaceae), Catasetum apolloi Benelli & Grade, from the municipality of Carlinda in the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil is described and illustrated. The plant was discovered in a pasture near the Teles Pires River growing epiphytically under the palm Maximiliana regia Mart. A discussion and consideration of possible related species is presented.

A new species, Drypetes kalamii, collected from the subtropical forests of two different Protected Areas, Buxa National Park and Jaldapara National Park in the state of West Bengal, India, is described and illustrated. This new species closely resembles Drypetes ellisii, but differs in being small shrub (female plants) or scrambling shrub (male plants) with corrugated branches and puberulous branchlets, longer petioles, laminae abruptly acuminate with pointed apices, slender and puberulent fruiting pedicels with bracts and bracteoles and smaller, ovoid-globose drupes.

In this paper, a new species, Muscari tauricum sp. nov. is described and illustrated from Southern Turkey. It has similar morphological characters to M. aucheri and M. bourgaei except for its broad and several leaves, pyramidal raceme, patent and longer pedicels, small fertile flowers, and early flowering time that distinguish the new species from other Muscari species. A complete morphological description and illustration are given, including comments on karyotypes. The morphological differences among the new species and related species are also discussed.
