Cirrhigaleus australis n. sp., a new Mandarin dogfish (Squaliformes: Squalidae) from the south-west Pacific

A new species of Mandarin dogfish, Cirrhigaleus australis n. sp., is described based on specimens from southeastern Australia. Australian populations were previously considered to be conspecific with Cirrhigaleus barbifer from the western North Pacific and Indonesia, but recent investigations revealed that the two forms differ in morphology and in the structure of the CO1 gene. Cirrhigaleus australis has a smaller eye, shorter dorsal-caudal space, and smaller pectoral fins and dorsal fins and spines. These species are clearly separable from the only other congener, C. asper, and all other members of the family Squalidae, by the possession of a greatly produced barbel on their anterior nasal flap. The new species occurs in temperate waters of eastern Australia, and possibly New Zealand.

Three species of the family Macrobiotidae (Tardigrada) were extracted from mosses collected in New Zealand. One of them, Macrobiotus kovalevi, is new for science. It is similar to the species from the harmsworthi and furciger-orcadensis groups of the genus Macrobiotus. The new species differs from all known species of these groups by the structure of the buccal armature (very short medio-dorsal ridge and the absence of typically developed teeth) and the unique structure of the egg chorion. In the same sample Macrobiotus cf. coronatus De Barros and Calcarobiotus (Discrepun- guis) sp. were found.

Zoarcid fishes of the genus Gymnelus Reinhardt inhabit the shelves of the North Pacific Ocean and the Arctic. A new species, G. pseudosquamatus sp. nov., is described from trawl samples taken at depths off South-West Greenland. It is most similar to the type species of the genus, Common Fish Doctor G. viridis, inhabiting the coastal waters of Greenland. The characters of the latter are specified on materials from the type locality, including the neotype and specimens of J.C.H. Reinhardt. Both species are in the group of Gymnelus with an interrupted supratemporal commissura, two supratemporal sensory pores (1+0+1), and a dorsal fin originating above the pectoral fin. The two species differ in a complex of characters, including habitus. In G. viridis, the trunk is roundish in cross section, highest above the beginning of the anal fin; the anterior rays of the dorsal fin are shortened, and covered with a thick and somewhat fleshy skin. In G. pseudosquamatus, the body is compressed and deeper anteriorly, the dorsal-fin rays are evenly elongated, and the fin membrane is thin. Differences in counts and measurements are statistically significant, including the number of vertebrae and rays in the dorsal, anal and pectoral fins, the number of teeth on the jaws, as well as the length and depth of the head, predorsal length, the length of pectoral fins, eye diameter and length of the gill slit. The color of G. pseudosquamatus, with 8–16 wide brown mottled bands, is also unusual, as the skin is dotted with light speckles that create the illusion of tiny scales, which is the reason for the name “pseudosquamatus”, the Deceptive Fish Doctor. While G. viridis is found inshore in a zone of macroalgae, the new species is found in deeper waters (100–457 m) along the shelf edge of South-West Greenland. The name Ophidium stigma Lay et Bennett, 1839 (=Gymnelus stigma) should be excluded from the synonymy of G. viridis, since the original description mentions the presence of scales on the body, which are absent in Gymnelus.

A new species of Zelandothyas, Z. balloti, is described from South Island, New Zealand. The deutonymph and larva of Zelandothyas diamphida Cook, 1983 are described for the first time. The deutonymph of Malgasacarus rarus Tuzovskij et al., 2008 is redescribed. The family Malgasacaridae Tuzovskij, Gerecke and Goldschmidt, 2008 is synonymized with Zelandothyadidae Cook, 1983 and Malgasacarus Tuzovskij et al., 2008 is transferred to the subfamily Zelandothyadinae. Thus redefined, the family Zelandothyadidae shows an interesting disjunction in the southern hemisphere. Here, it is considered a family incertae sedis, provisionally comprising the monophyletic Zelandothyadinae and the enigmatic Australiothyadinae Cook, 1986. Zelandothyadidae are unusual in combining character states previously considered diagnostic for either Eylaoidea or Hydryphantoidea.

The Western Australian representatives of the genus Crinia Tschudi are reviewed. On the basis of field observations and data from in vitro crosses it is concluded that the following species occur in south-western Australia: Crinia rosea Harrison, C. leai Fletcher, C. georgiana Tschudi, C. glauerti Loveridge, C. insignifera Moore, and a new species. From in vitro crosses, Moore's (1954) conclusion that C. signifera Girard does not occur in the south-west of Australia is confirmed. C. glauerti is regarded as a western representative of the C. signifera super-species. Collections in eastern Australia revealed the presence of an undescribed species which is a representative of the C. insignifera super-species. Life history data are presented.

A new endemic species of triplefin Ruanoho scurra is described from deep water (108–216 m) on the shelf region around coastal New Zealand (Northland to Stewart Island). It is differentiated from its congeners by the combination of fresh colour (bright yellow spots on the head and anterior body, oblique lines on the dorsal and anal fins, and sub-vertical lines on the caudal) as well as some proportional measurements. Comments are made on the relationship with its congeners, and evolutionary history of the family in New Zealand waters, along with observations on the habitat in which this new species is found. This paper formally describes the species first mentioned in Stewart & Clements 2015:1523 as the polkadot triplefin.

A new species of the late Mesozoic–Cenozoic family Ringiculidae (Ringicula (Ringicula) cockburnensis n. sp.) is described from basal glauconitic beds of late Eocene age of Cockburn Island, Antarctica, and is the first reported occurrence of the family Ringiculidae from the continent of Antarctica. Ringicula (R.) cockburnensis n. sp. most closely resembles R. castigata from the middle Oligocene Duntroonian Stage of New Zealand and provides further support for the strong provinciality (Weddellian Province) that existed along the southern margin of the Pacific during the Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary.

A new species of chimaera, Hydrolagus melanophasma sp. nov. (Chimaeridae), is described from the eastern North Pacific. It is distinct from other eastern Pacific chimaeroids by the following characteristics: a large slightly curved dorsal fin spine extending beyond dorsal fin apex, a long second dorsal fin of uniform height throughout, large pectoral fins extending beyond the pelvic fin insertion when laid flat, trifid claspers forked for approximately one-quarter the total clasper length and a uniform black coloration throughout. The new species is compared to other eastern Pacific members of the genus Hydrolagus including H. alphus, H. colliei, H. macrophthalmus, and H. mccoskeri. Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) video footage has identified and documented Hydrolagus melanophasma from the Gulf of California. ROV observations suggest that individuals typically occur over soft-bottom habitats or cobble patches with minimal vertical relief. This is in contrast to other eastern Pacific Hydrolagus species that tend to occur in areas of high rocky relief. The known distribution of this new species at present extends from southern California, U.S.A., along the Pacific coast of Baja California, Mexico, and into the Gulf of California.

Descriptions are given of two specimens of an unusual type of gonatid squid taken from the North Pacific Ocean. A discussion is made of their relationship to two existing genera, Gonatus and Berryteuthis, of the family Gonatidae, and a note is included on a North Pacific gonatid larva that may be a related earlier stage of these two specimens. Because of their size and condition, neither a new genus nor a new species is declared; however, on the basis of these records, it is suggested that there is a need for a redefinition of the genera of the family Gonatidae.
