Until recently, the Asiatic pitviper genus Tropidolaemus Wagler, 1830 comprised only two species, the rare T. huttoni (Smith, 1949) from India and T. wagleri (Boie, 1827) (for discussion about authorship and data of publication see Vogel et al. 2007), which is known to represent a polytypic complex of morphologically distinct species occurring in South Vietnam and from the Malaysian Peninsula through Sumatra, Borneo, the Philippines and on Sulawesi (Iskandar & Colijn 2001, Vogel 2006). In a first paper of a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the T. wagleri complex, Vogel et al. (2007) demonstrated that these widespread and medically important venomous snakes actually represent at least three different taxa (wagleri, subannulatus, and philippensis), of which T. wagleri sensu stricto is restricted to Southern Thailand, West Malaysia as well as Sumatra and some adjacent islands. Therein, the green form of Sulawesi pitviper population (in addition to those of Borneo, and most Philippine islands) was preliminary assigned to the taxon subannulatus Gray, 1842.

Abstract Background Barbels are ray finned cyprinid fishes of the Old-World with partially unresolved, intricate taxonomy. Within the Barbus sensu lato paraphyletic assemblage, Barbus sensu stricto is a monophyletic tetraploid lineage of Europe, northern Africa and Middle East, including two monophyletic sibling genera: Barbus and Luciobarbus. Italy, Slovenia and northern Croatia are natively inhabited by several entities of the genus Barbus, whose relationships and taxonomic ranks are still unclear. Aim of the present work is to focus on phylogeography of Italian and Slovenian barbels, with an appraisal of their current taxonomy. Results One hundred fifty specimens were collected in 78 sampling sites from 33 main watersheds, widely distributed along Italian and Slovenian ichthyogeographic districts. We amplified two mitochondrial markers, cytochrome b (cytb) and control region (D-loop), to infer a robust phylogeny for our sample and investigate on species delimitation. Our results strongly indicate all Italian and Adriatic Slovenian fluvio-lacustrine barbels to be comprised into at least three distinct species. We provide a proposal of taxonomic revision and a list of synonymies for two of them and a new description under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature rules for the third one. Conclusions If nuclear data will confirm our findings, at least three specific entities should be acknowledged across our sampling area. Namely, the three species are (i) Barbus plebejus, in the Padano-Venetian district; (ii) Barbus tyberinus, in the Tuscany-Latium district; (iii) Barbus oscensis Rossi & Plazzi sp. nov., in the Tyrrhenian and southernmost-Adriatic parts of Apulia-Campania district. Finally, we briefly discuss the implications of such a taxonomic scenario on conservation policies.

Taxonomic revision of a single species complex of Photinia integrifolia (Rosaceae) is accomplished during the revision of the genus Photinia sensu stricto. The study is based on the protologues and type specimens deposited in relevant herbaria. Thirty-two names are recorded for a single species. Five names are proposed as new synonyms, six lectotypes are designated, two names are identified as nomen nudum and three names are considered to be illegitimate. Taxonomic notes with type specimens, locality, and distribution for each taxon are provided.

The Hemidactylus brookii group taxon has received increased attention in recent years from systematists and taxonomists attempting to unravel the complicated issues of its synonyms. In this study, a morphological approach is adopted to reexamine the syntypes of Hemidactylus brookii and Hemidactylus subtriedroides. The syntype series of H. brookii is found to be composed of two morphologically distinct species. A Borneo syntype is designated as lectotype and redescribed in detail to provide taxonomic and nomenclatural stability for the species. A syntype of H. subtriedroides is designated lectotype and also redescribed in detail, along with additional populations, which includes the Australian paralectotype of H. brookii sensu lato. Hemidactylus subtriedroides is morphologically distinct from H. brookii sensu stricto, but indistinguishable from the recently elevated synonym Hemidactylus tenkatei with which it is here considered a junior subjective synonym. The primary purpose of DNA-barcoding projects is to generate an efficient expertise and identification tool. This is an important challenge to the taxonomy of the 21st century, as the demand increases and the expert capacity does not. However, identifying specimens using DNA-barcodes requires a preliminary analysis to relate molecular clusters to available scientific names. Through a case study of the genus Eumunida (Decapoda : Eumunididae), we illustrate how naming molecule-based units, and thus providing an accurate DNA-based identification tool, is facilitated by sequencing type specimens. Using both morphological and unlinked molecular markers (COI and 28S genes), we analysed 230 specimens from 12 geographic areas, covering two-thirds of the known diversity of the genus, including type specimens of 13 species. Most hypotheses of species delimitation are validated, as they correspond to molecular units linked to only one taxonomic name (and vice versa). However, a putative cryptic species is also revealed and three entities previously named as distinct species may in fact belong to a single one, and thus need to be synonymised. Our analyses, which integrate the current naming rules, enhance the α-taxonomy of the genus and provide an effective identification tool based on DNA-barcodes. They illustrate the ability of DNA-barcodes, especially when type specimens are included, to pinpoint where a taxonomic revision is needed.

Nereis falsa de Quatrefages, 1866 has been regarded as a cosmopolitan species, and several species described from different localities have been regarded as junior synonyms of N. falsa. The present study is an attempt to resolve the taxonomic confusion in N. falsa, which seems to contain several distinct species due to previous inappropriate synonymy, widely distributed in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific Oceans. For this purpose, the authors first propose the resurrection of the synonymy of N. falsa with Hediste diversicolor that was concluded during the 19th century but disregarded later. After the fixation of the identity of N. falsa sensu stricto, the authors re-evaluate the proper taxonomic status of species which have previously been confused with N. falsa. Type, topotype and non-type specimens were examined; most species are redescribed, and others are reinstated. Nereis splendida Grube, 1840 is a valid Mediterranean species, and a neotype is proposed; it includes the Mediterranean populations of what is currently regarded as N. falsa. Consequently, N. falsa is transferred to Hediste Malmgren, 1867, and some taxonomic comments are added for the latter genus and a key to species is also included. Nereis callaona Grube & Kröyer in Grube, 1857, N. marginata Grube & Örsted in Grube, 1857 and N. riisei Grube & Örsted in Grube, 1857 are restricted to tropical American shores and are all redescribed. Nereis pelagica lunulata Ehlers, 1901, formerly regarded as a junior synonym of N. falsa by Fauvel (1941), is redescribed and elevated in rank to species level. Nereis lucipeta Ehlers, 1908, formerly regarded as a junior synonym of N. splendida by Ehlers (1913) and of N. falsa by Fauvel (1919), is reinstated. Nereis occidentalis Hartman, 1945 is also redescribed. Furthermore, N. ambigua Treadwell, 1937, formerly regarded as a junior synonym of N. riisei by Monro (1933), deserves to be reinstated. Western Africa specimens recorded as N. falsa are newly described as N. mezianei sp. nov.

Currently three different species are recognized within the Southeast Asian agamid genus Hydrosaurus: H. amboinensis (Schlosser, 1768) from Ambon, Seram, Sulawesi and New Guinea, H. pustulatus (Eschscholtz, 1829) from the Philippines and H. weberi Barbour, 1911 from Halmahera and adjacent islands. Historically, two additional species were described from the island of Sulawesi, but were synonymized with H. amboinensis more than a century ago and have been treated as such in most subsequent publications. In order to revise the taxonomy and diversity of these enigmatic agamid lizards, we examined the corresponding type specimens and additional material originating from Sulawesi and compared them to photographs of live specimens from field trips. Due to differences in colour pattern and scalation characters, we resurrect the taxa celebensis Peters, 1872 and microlophus Bleeker, 1860 from the synonymy of H. amboinensis, which in turn is restricted to the central Moluccas and New Guinea. Hence, Sulawesi is currently the only known island within the genus’ range to be inhabited by two different species of sailfin lizards. Our systematic investigation brings the number of recognized species within the genus Hydrosaurus to five.

In this first paper of a series of three, the taxonomy of the Asian pitvipers of the genus Tropidolaemus is re-evaluated on the basis of morphological analyses. Variation in morphological characters was investigated on the basis of specimens from the whole range of the pitviper currently known as Tropidolaemus wagleri (Boie, 1827). Our results, based on morphological univariate and multivariate analyses, define three clusters of populations that are morphologically diagnosable and which are here considered to represent distinct species following the Biological Species Concept and the Phylogenetic Species Concept. After a review of available names among the list of synonyms created during the confused taxonomical history of the genus Tropidolaemus, it appears that Tropidolaemus wagleri (Boie, 1827) is the valid name of the first cluster which includes populations inhabiting Southern Thailand, West Malaysia, Sumatra, Nias, Mentawei Archipelago and Bangka Island (but not Belitung). In order to stabilize the binomen, we select and describe a neotype for Tropidolaemus wagleri. A second cluster, for which the binomen Tropidolaemus subannulatus (Gray, 1842) isavailable, includes in this preliminary step populations from Borneo, Sulawesi, Sulu Archipelago and the Philippines. Its detailed taxonomy will be addressed in the second paper of the series. Long regarded as a synonym or a subgenus of Trimeresurus (see, for example, Brattstrom, 1964), the genus Tropidolaemus was resurrected by Burger (1971) to then accommodate the sole species formerly called Trimeresurus wagleri. The validity of the genus is accepted by all recent authors. This genus is characterized by the absence of a nasal pore, upper surfaces of the snout and head covered with distinctly keeled small scales, strongly keeled gular scales, second supralabial not bordering the anterior margin of the loreal pit and topped by a prefoveal, and a green coloration in juveniles which may or may not change with growth. For long, Tropidolaemus wagleri was the sole species included in the monotypic genus, but David & Vogel (1998) showed that the Indian species Trimeresurus huttoni Smith, 1949 was clearly a member of this genus. In this first paper of a series of three, we address the rather confused nomenclatural history and taxonomy of Tropidolaemus wagleri (Boie, 1827) sensu auctorum (see, for example, David & Ineich, 1999; McDiarmid et al., 1999; Gumprecht et al., 2004). Members of this species complex are widespread throughout the IndoMalayan part of Asia, with an isolated population in Southern Vietnam. Besides this latter country, it is distributed from southern Thailand to the Philippines and Sulawesi Island, including West Malaysia, and the islands of Sumatra, Borneo, Bangka, Nias, the Mentawai Archipelago, and Belitung. Although a common and conspicuous, very variable species, few authors tried to investigate its taxonomy, most probably following Boulenger (1896) who synonymised the various names under the sole specific name Lachesis wagleri. Nevertheless, Taylor (1917, 1922) examined Philippine populations and recognized three subspecies, of which two were considered endemic to the Philippine islands, Tropidolaemus wagleri alboviridis (Taylor, 1917) and T. wagleri subannulatus (Gray, 1842). This position was not accepted by Leviton (1964), who investigated the taxonomy of the Philippine populations and considered again Tropidolaemus wagleri to be monotypic. However, Leviton added: “The exact status of the nominal species and subspecies I have placed into the synonymy of T. wagleri cannot be settled until the type specimens and additional material from scattered localities can be examined.” The monotypic status of Tropidolaemus wagleri was accepted by subsequent authors (Harding & Welch, 1980; Hoge & Romano-Hoge, 1981; Alcala, 1986; Welch, 1988; Golay et al., 1993; David & Vogel, 1996, Manthey & Grossmann, 1997; McDiarmid et al., 1999), although some noted that the taxonomy of the species was unsatisfactory (David & Ineich, 1999). David & Vogel (1998) discussed the taxon described as Trimesurus philippensis Gray, 1842, regarded as valid by Taylor (1922) and Maslin (1942) as Trimeresurus philippinensis, but placed in the synonymy of Tropidolaemus wagleri by Leviton (1964), who, however, seemingly did not examine its holotype. David & Vogel (1998) examined two specimens, namely the holotypes of Trimeresurus philippensis Gray, 1842 and Tropidolaemus hombronii Jacquinot & Guichenot, 1848, clearly a synonym of the former one. David & Vogel (1998) and David & Ineich (1999) noted that both specimens displayed notable morphological differences (scalation of head and body and coloration) with Tropidolaemus wagleri.

During a taxonomic revision of species belonging to Phylloporia, some collections from the Atlantic Forest of southern Brazil previously determined as P. spathulata had morphological discrepancies in comparison to the type material of this taxon. Both molecular phylogenetic and morphological analysis revealed them to be two distinct species, described here as Phylloporia elegans sp. nov. and P. nodostipitata sp. nov. They mainly differ from P. spathulata by having reviving basidiomata with smaller pores and basidiospores. Phylloporia nodostipitata develops caespitose basidiomata with a knotted and flexuous stipe and a tomentose pileal surface. Phylloporia elegans develops solitary basidiomata with a cylindrical and straight stipe and a plagiotrichoderm pileal surface. Both species are described, illustrated, discussed and compared with Phylloporia spathulata based on a study of the type. Phylloporia spathulata sensu stricto is presented based on its basionym type material.

Abstract—Hymenophyllum subg. Mecodium, composed of the taxonomically notorious H. polyanthos and approximately 15 other closely related taxa, is a common element of filmy fern communities in the tropical and subtropical moist forests. In Taiwan, although only H. polyanthos and one or two closely related taxa were recognized in recent studies, considerable morphological variation has been observed among populations throughout the island. Thus, we conducted an extensive morphological investigation, as well as a molecular phylogenetic analysis, to clarify the specific diversity and phylogenetic relationships within Hymenophyllum subg. Mecodium in Taiwan. Field and herbaria surveys helped in recognizing five morphs in Taiwan, mainly differentiated by the combination of certain traits, viz., the presence or absence of stipe wings, general frond size and shape, degree of laminar crispation, sori position, and involucre shape. The different morphs had diverse ecological preferences. The phylogenetic tree, inferred from the sequences of the plastid loci rbcL and rps4-trnS, demonstrated that Hymenophyllum subg. Mecodium materials in Taiwan comprise several well-supported lineages, mostly corresponding to the classification based on morphology. Comparing with the protologues and type specimens of 34 related scientific names, the five morphs are herein recognized as five independent species. A new species, Hymenophyllum exquisitum, is described here. Also, the status of H. paniculiflorum is reconfirmed and that of H. fujisanense, H. parallelocarpum, and H. punctisorum reinstated. Only H. exquisitum and H. parallelocarpum are endemic to Taiwan among all the species studied. In addition, the names Hymenophyllum blumeanum, H. integrum, H. microsorum, H. polyanthos, H. tenellum, and H. wrightii are now excluded from the regional flora, and several related taxa from China, Taiwan, and the Philippines are treated as synonyms. This study unravels the deep phylogenetic relationships within Hymenophyllum subg. Mecodium in Taiwan and Eastern Asia.

Abstract Staphylococcus cohnii (SC), a coagulase-negative bacterium, was first isolated in 1975 from human skin. Early phenotypic analyses led to the delineation of two subspecies (subsp.), Staphylococcus cohnii subsp. cohnii (SCC) and Staphylococcus cohnii subsp. urealyticus (SCU). SCC was considered to be specific to humans whereas SCU apparently demonstrated a wider host range, from lower primates to humans. The type strains ATCC 29974 and ATCC 49330 have been designated for SCC and SCU, respectively. Comparative analysis of 66 complete genome sequences—including a novel SC isolate—revealed unexpected patterns within the SC complex, both in terms of genomic sequence identity and gene content, highlighting the presence of 3 phylogenetically distinct groups. Based on our observations, and on the current guidelines for taxonomic classification for bacterial species, we propose a revision of the SC species complex. We suggest that SCC and SCU should be regarded as two distinct species: SC and SU (Staphylococcus urealyticus), and that two distinct subspecies, SCC and SCB (SC subsp. barensis, represented by the novel strain isolated in Bari) should be recognized within SC. Furthermore, since large scale comparative genomics studies recurrently suggest inconsistencies or conflicts in taxonomic assignments of bacterial species, we believe that the approach proposed here might be considered for more general application.
