We list 117 genus-group names of Diptera that were proposed after 1930 with diagnoses and more than one included species but without type species designations and review their current status. Research into the earliest proposals making the names available resulted in one new synonymy: Breviculala Ito, 1949 = Pseudacidia Munro, 1935, n. syn. (Tephritidae), the discovery of a number of earlier designations, and the recognition of available genus-group names previously thought to be nomina nuda. Discussion is made concerning type designations in the Zoological Record and type fixations by monotypy for genus-group names proposed after 1930 without a type species designation.

AbstractNeotherevella n.gen. is proposed as a replacement for Neothereva Kröber sensu Lyneborg (1976). Neothereva Kröber, 1912, is placed in new synonymy with Thereva Latreille, 1796, as the consequence of an overlooked designation of a type-species for Neothereva Kröber, 1912, by Kröber (1935). Neotherevella is fully described. Five specific names are placed in new combination with Neotherevella, which is known from Namibia, Mauritania, Algeria, Sudan, Egypt, Israel, Uzbechistan and Mongolia. It is demonstrated that two species described in combination with Neothereva by Zaitzev (1970) do not belong to Neotherevella.

In this work, it is explained why previous authors who considered that Canthidium lentum Erichson, 1947 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) was fixed as the type species of Canthidium Erichson, 1847 in Robert Lucas’ 1920 catalogue of Coleoptera genera were mistaken. Instead, the first authors to designate a type species for Canthidium were Martínez et al. in 1964, who designated C. thalassinum Erichson, 1847. Since both species are currently placed in different subgenera, the subgeneric classication must change: Eucanthidium Halffter & Martínez, 1986 is a new junior synonym of Canthidium, while the subgenus previously considered to be Canthidium (Canthidium) is changed to Canthidium (Neocanthidium) Martínez et al., 1964 based on the revalidation of the latter name. A checklist containing information on the type locality, type material, synonymy, and distribution of all the 172 valid species included in the genus (72 in the nominotypical subgenus, 69 in Neocanthidium, and 31 as incertae sedis) is presented, as well as a review of the taxonomic history of Canthidium and the new synonymy between C. (C.) ardens Bates, 1887 and Canthidium ardens mutatum Bates, 1887.

Thermomicrobium fosteri Phillips and Perry 1976 was included on the Approved List of Bacterial Names with the type strain designated ATCC 29033. However, this strain is no longer directly listed in the ATCC online catalogue and the only reference to ATCC 29033 is under ATCC 35268, a strain of Thermoleophilum minutum Zarilla and Perry 1986. There currently appears to be no formal documentation in the pages of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology with regards either the current status of the name Thermomicrobium fosteri Phillips and Perry 1976 or its type strain ATCC 29033.

This short communication addresses the problem associated with the current taxonomic status of the prehistoric edentate genus Neocnus Arredondo, 1961 (with type species Micronocnus gliriformis Matthew, 1931) which has long been considered a senior homonym of the dendrochirotid sea cucumber genus Neocnus Cherbonnier, 1972 (type species Neocnus incubans Cherbonnier, 1972) and replaces the latter (junior homonym) with Incubocnus n.g. The diagnosis of the new genus is the same as the cucumariid Neocnus as amended by O’Loughlin & O’Hara (1992). A brief history of the senior homonym Neocnus (Edentata) is given followed by a short literature survey dealing with its junior homonym.

The Diptera genus-group names of Johann Wilhelm Meigen are reviewed, revised, and annotated. A total of 266 available genus-group names in 69 families of Diptera are listed alphabetically, including authorship, year and page of the original publication, originally included species, type species and method of fixation, current status of the name, family placement, and any emendations that have been found in the literature. Unavailable names suppressed by ICZN rulings as well as incorrect original and subsequent spellings are included as unnumbered entries. Remarks are given to clarify nomenclatural or taxonomic information. In addition, an index to all the species-group names of Diptera proposed by Meigen (3,117 in total, of which 2,966 are available) is given with a bibliographic reference to each original citation. The molluscan taxa named by George Perry in his two publications, the Arcana; or the museum of natural history:, etc., published in 1810–1811, and the Conchology of 1811 are listed with notations on their current status, some figures being identified to the species level for the first time, some being placed in the synonymy of earlier names and others declared nomina dubia. Five species that are identified as previously unused senior subjective synonyms of names in current usage and one unused senior primary homonym are declared nomina oblita. Those declared herein to be nomina oblita are: Triplex cornuta Perry, 1811; Buccinella quadrata Perry, 1811; Cassis rotundata Perry, 1811; Aranea tentacula Perry, 1811; Buccinella tuberculata Perry, 1811; and Solen viride [sic; correctly viridis]. The names conserved are, respectively: Murex brevifrons Lamarck, 1822; Cancellaria spengleriana Deshayes, 1830; Cassis madagascariensis Lamarck, 1822; Murex cabritii Bernardi, 1859; Turbinella [now Vasum] globulus Lamarck, 1816; and Solen viridis Say, 1822.Three Perry species are shown to be senior synonyms of names in current use but do not qualify for nomen oblitum status under the Code. They are: Tellina aurea Perry, 1811; Triplex rosaria Perry, 1811; and Voluta pattersonia Perry, 1811. Junior subjective synonyms affected by these three are, respectively: Tellina vulsella Hanley, 1845; Chicoreus palmarosae (Lamarck, 1822); and Lyria nucleus (Lamarck, 1811). Type species designations for Perry’s genera are listed and type species are designated for Columna and Strigula. The treatment of Perry’s Conchology by other authors is discussed. Three distinct editions of the Conchology are identified. Perry’s Arcana is the subject of another paper now in preparation but its mollusks are treated herein.

Forty species in 19 genera are recorded from Yemen. Three new genera are described: Paglianotilla gen. nov. (type species P. hogenesi sp. nov.), Rasnitsynitilla gen. nov. (type species R. brachyptera sp. nov.), and Vanhartenidia gen. nov. (type species V. felix sp. nov.). Ten new species are described: Arnoldtilla achterbergi sp. nov. (Yemen), Dentilla ehrenbergi sp. nov. (Yemen, Saudi Arabia), P. hogenesi sp. nov. (Yemen), R. brachyptera sp. nov. (Yemen), R. invreai sp. nov. (Yemen), R. schmideggeri sp. nov. (Yemen), V. arabica sp. nov. (Yemen), V. felix sp. nov. (Yemen), V. tihama sp. nov. (Yemen), and Spinulomutilla yemenita sp. nov. (Yemen). Hitherto unknown females are recognized for Arnoldtilla Nonveiller, Omotilla Invrea, and Tropidotilla milmili (Magretti). New synonymy is proposed for Omotilla Invrea 1943 = Conjunctotilla Nonveiller 1996, syn. nov.; Pseudophotopsis aurea (Klug 1829) = Mutilla kassalina Magretti 1898, syn. nov., P. continua arabica Hammer 1962, syn. nov. New status is proposed for Arnoldtilla Nonveiller, Myrmilla rubida Magretti, M. parvula Magretti, Glossotilla djiboutiensis Bischoff, V. kassalana (Bischoff), V. pyrrhospilota (Bischoff). New combination is proposed for: A. bischoffi (Arnold), A. silvestris (Arnold), O. conjuncta (Klug), O. conjunctoides (Magretti), O. grazianii (Invrea), Dentilla arabica (Hammer), V. dives (Smith), V. kassalana (Bischoff), V. pyrrhospilota (Bischoff), V. tricolor (Klug), and V. unguiculata (Magretti). Seventeen species are recorded for the first time from Yemen: Pseudophotopsis maura Bischoff, P. mascatiana Invrea, Myrmilla parvula Magretti, M. rubida Magretti, T. bellii (Magretti), T. carinulifera Bischoff, T. frontalis (Klug), T. milmili (Magretti), Strangulotilla samharica (Magretti), Ronisia idonea (André), Dentilla testacea (Klug), Glossotilla djiboutiensis Bischoff, Dentotilla auricoma (Bischoff), Dasylabris biblica Invrea, Tricholabiodes niloticus Suárez, T. pedunculatoides Bischoff, and T. sudanensis Suárez. Dentilla testacea (Klug) and Tricholabiodes chloroticus (Gribodo) are recorded for the first time from Saudi Arabia. Tricholabiodes sudanensis Suárez is recorded for the first time from Oman. Glossotilla djiboutiensis Bischoff is recorded for the first time from Eritrea. Keys to eight species of Vanhartenidia and three species of Rasnitsynitilla are given.

AbstractThe genus Paramesodes Ishihara (= Coexitianus Dlabola) (Homoptera, Auchenorrhyncha, Cicadellidae) is redescribed and revised. It comprises 11 species, of which 8 are described as new, distributed in the Old World tropics and sub-tropics; P. albinervosus (Mats.) (type species) from Japan, Taiwan, S. China; P. lineaticollis (Distant) (= ishurdii Mahmood & Meher, new synonymy), from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan; P. lucaniae (Dlabola) stat. rev., from India, E. Mediterranean, Middle East, USSR; P. pusae n. sp. from India; P. matalae n. sp. from Sri Lanka; P. mokanshanae n. sp. from S. China; P. njalae n. sp. from Sierra Leone; P. morowalae n. sp. from Sulawesi; P. annamae n. sp. from Vietnam; P. lagunae n. sp. from Philippine Islands; P. tawae n. sp. from Philippine Islands. A key to males is provided. The lectotype of P. lineaticollis (Distant) is designated.

The elateriform family Callirhipidae Emden, 1924 is catalogued. The family contains 14 genus-group taxa, of which 10 are currently considered as valid and four as synonyms. The family contains 214 available species-group names, of which 175 represent currently valid species and subspecies, and 39 are synonyms. For each taxon, all references known to the author are listed. For species-group taxa, type locality, type material, current status and known distribution are given. Lists of unavailable names and taxa excluded from the family Callirhipidae are presented. A systematic checklist of the family is appended. The Australasian wolf spider genus Artoria, with A. parvula Thorell, 1877 as type species, is revised in part. In addition to A. parvula (=A. luwamata Barrion & Litsinger, 1995, new synonymy), recorded from the Philippines and Indonesia, and A. palustris Dahl, 1908 from Papua New Guinea, it includes the Australian A. albopedipalpis, sp. nov., A. avona, sp. nov., A. cingulipes Simon, 1909, A. flavimanus Simon, 1909 (=Lycosa neboissi McKay, 1976, new synonymy), A. howquaensis, sp. nov., A. lineata (L. Koch, 1877), A. mckayi, sp. nov., A. quadrata, sp. nov., A. taeniifera Simon, 1909, A. triangularis, sp. nov., A. ulrichi, sp. nov. and A. versicolor (L. Koch, 1877). Artoriella flavimanus, the type species of Artoriella Roewer, 1960, is returned to Artoria. Of the remaining species of Artoriella, the Western Australian species A. cingulipes and A. taeniifera are transferred to Artoria, the African species Artoriella amoena Roewer, 1960, A. maculatipes Roewer, 1960 and A. lycosimorpha (Strand, 1909) are considered incertae sedis and Artoriella maura (Urquhart, 1891) from New Zealand is considered a nomen dubium. Trabaeola Roewer is a junior synonym of Artoria, as its type species, T. lineata, is transferred to Artoria. Trabea australiensis (L. Koch, 1877) is considered a nomen dubium. The genus Artoria is characterised by a unique apophysis near the base of the embolus of the male pedipalp. It does not fit into the existing lycosid subfamilies, which have been established by investigation of mainly Northern Hemisphere taxa. Artoria is widespread in Australia and species can be found in a range of habitats (swamps and riverbanks, open areas, rain and dry sclerophyll forests).
