Taxonomic status of Akodon oenos (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae), an obscure species from West Central Argentina

Akodon oenos Braun, Mares, and Ojeda, 2000 was described on a large sample of individuals collected from two localities near Mendoza city, Argentina. This sample was obtained in the 1980’s by Julio R. Contreras and María I. Rossi and labeled, but never published, as “Akodon minoprioi new species.” The description provided by Braun and collaborators was limited to craniodental and color pelage traits compared with those of five individuals of the sympatric form A. molinae Contreras, 1968. Akodon oenos was proposed as new and presumptively allied to the A. varius species group of Akodon. In February 2009 we collected an individual of Akodon in Llancanelo Natural Reserve, southern Mendoza, that morphologically fits the original description of A. oenos. Further study of some individuals of the type series of A. oenos reinforces this taxonomic hypothesis for the Llancanelo specimen. However, comparisons with other Akodon species overlooked by Braun and collaborators, reveals striking similarities with the widespread and phenotypically variable species A. spegazzinii Thomas, 1897. The evidence at hand, including morphological, karyological, and genetical traits, allows us to propose a new taxonomic scenario. A. oenos is considered here a junior synonym of A. spegazzinii and therefore belongs to the A. boliviensis species group of Akodon, extending the known geographic distribution for this species at least to southern Mendoza piedmont in the ecotone between the Monte and Patagonia eco-regions. More generally, this situation highlights the necessity when working with complex genera (as many sigmodontines are) to perform extensive comparisons and to use several sets of evidence in order to reduce the probability of generating biologically redundant names and more taxonomic confusion.

AbstractNotes are given on the identity and synonymy of five species of Lepidoptera described by Linnaeus, twenty-eight by Fabricius and two by Ström. Each species dealt with is treated under the apparent valid combination; for each species reference is given to the original description. Twenty-four new species-group name synonyms are introduced and nine new combinations are established: Nemaxera betulinella (Fabr.), Argyresthia arcella (Fabr.), Depressaria depressana (Fabr.), Chrysoesthia drurella (Fabr.), Brachmia blandella (Fabr.), Acleris laterana (Fabr.), Pseudohermenias abietana (Fabr.), Epinotia abbreviana (Fab.) and Acrobasis repandana (Fabr.). During the work two neotypes, twenty-seven lectotypes and two paralectotypes have been designated and are here cited for the first time.

Orbitolina daviesi Hofker, 1966 (family Orbitolinidae) was validly described and thoroughly illustrated from Thanetian limestones of Pakistan. Although its attribution to the genus Orbitolina d’Orbigny and any phylogenetic relationships with the Cretaceous taxa have been refuted shortly afterwards, the species has not been taxonomically revised since then. Karsella hottingeri Sirel, 1999 was established as new genus and new species from the Thanetian of Turkey, without taking into account J. Hofker’s publication. The original description and genus diagnosis of Karsella has meanwhile been emended to include the occurrence of a radial zone with septula that follow a zig-zag pattern and associated linear arrangement of the foramina, as well as a complex embryo. Orbitolina daviesi clearly displays these features and is here considered a species of the genus Karsella Sirel. Karsella hottingeri is regarded as a subjective junior synonym of O. daviesi Hofker and therefore, the only species of the genus is given as a new combination: Karsella daviesi (Hofker). From a suprageneric viewpoint, the two Paleogene genera Karsella Sirel and Cushmania Silvestri display a complex embryo and might belong to a new subfamily of the Orbitolinidae, phylogenetically different and unrelated to the lower-mid Cretaceous Orbitolininae.

The Asian frog genus Megophrys is a diverse group of morphologically conserved, forest-dwelling frogs. The genus harbours highly localised species diversification and new species continue to be described on a regular basis. We examined the taxonomic status of a population of Megophrys frogs from the Hoang Lien Range in northern Vietnam and southern China previously identified as M. kuatunensis (subgenus Panophrys). Preliminary phylogenetic analyses using a fragment of 16S rDNA places the species in question within the Megophrys (subgenus Panophrys) species group, a primarily Chinese radiation within the genus. On the basis of morphological, molecular and bioacoustic data, we conclude that this population does not represent M. kuatunensis, or any known species in the genus. We herein describe this species of Megophrys as new. Known only from Sa Pa District, Lao Cai Province in Vietnam and Jinping County, Yunnan Province in China, the new species is likely to be threatened by ongoing deforestation in the region. We provide an updated species description of M. kuatunensis based on type specimens, and suggest that M. kuatunensis is likely to be restricted to eastern China.

The Ctenistini fauna of China is insufficient documented. In this paper the first Chinese species of the genus Ctenisomorphus Raffray, 1890, C. yinggelingensis sp. nov., is described and separated from congeners based on two male and four female specimens collected at Yinggeling Natural Reserve, Hainan Island, southern China. Images of the habitus and major diagnostic characters of the new species are provided. The taxonomic status of Largeyeus anhuianus J.-K. Li, 1993 distributed in Anhui, eastern China is discussed, and the genus is placed as a junior synonym of Poroderus Sharp, 1883 syn. nov., resulting in P. anhuianus comb. nov.

Brasilocaenis atawallpa was recently described based on male imago from Colombian Amazon. The original description does not contain a designation of type specimens or locality, and it just states that the type series was studied in order to perform the cladistic analysis. In this context, we herein designate the lectotype and paralectotypes of B. atawallpa and describe its nymphal stage. The nymphs were associated to B. atawallpa by the male genitalia extracted from mature nymphs. The nymphal stage of B. atawallpa can be differentiated from others known nymphs of the genus by absence of pointed microspines on opercular gill, fore coxa without projection, middle coxa with well-developed and semicircular projection, hind coxa with finger-like projection, fore and middle tarsal claws without denticles and hind margin of the ninth sternite almost straight.

Anomaloglossus is a species-rich genus of frogs endemic to the Guiana Shield that still harbors several unnamed species. Within the A. stepheni species group (which includes four valid nominal species), A. baeobatrachus has an uncertain taxonomic status, notably because the holotype was an unvouchered specimen depicted in a popular journal. Another member of this group, A. leopardus, was only superficially described, lacking information on the sex of specimens in the type series and on advertisement call. Therefore, these two taxa need clarifications in order to allow the description of the extant undescribed species. In this paper, we redescribe A. baeobatrachus based on newly collected material from the species type locality and provide information about its reproductive ecology. We also provide an amended definition of A. leopardus using newly collected material from its type locality. These two species form a clade along with a third species from the Eastern Guiana Shield, which is also described herein. The reproductive biology of A. baeobatrachus and A. stepheni is very similar. Both species have endotrophic and nidicolous tadpoles, despite being distantly related, suggesting independent evolution of this breeding mode. The new species and A. leopardus, on the other hand, have exotrophic tadpoles.

ABSTRACT A new species of Farlowella is described from eighteen specimens collected in the upper rio Xingu basin, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The new species is a member of the Farlowella nattereri species-group and can be distinguished from other members of the group, with exception of Farlowella jauruensis , by exhibiting a proportionally shorter snout. The new species is distinguished from F. jauruensis by differences on the cleithrum and plate morphology, by counts of pelvic and caudal-fin rays, and by the color pattern of the snout. The discovery of new lots of F. jauruensis , a species so far known only from the holotype, is also herein reported. This discovery represents a considerable expansion of the geographic distribution and of the number of known specimens of F . jauruensis .

We studied the taxonomic status of the north African Agama species A. impalearis, A. castroviejoi, and A. boueti. The study of recently collected specimens and museum material, as well as phylogenetic analyses of a short 16S ribosomal RNA gene fragment, revealed the presence of an undescribed species in Adrar des Ifoghas (Mali), Aïr Mountains (Niger), Ahaggar Mountains (Algeria) and Tassili n’Ajjer (Algeria, Lybia), previously mistaken either as A. impalearis or A. agama. The new species, Agama tassiliensis n. sp., clearly belongs to the impalearis – boueti – spinosa species group but differs from these species, among other characters, by its red, reddish-orange or orange vertebral stripe in males, long and angular head, long limbs and toes (with 4 th toe usually slightly longer than 3 rd toe), long but low nuchal crest made of 10 to 15 spines (rarely 8–9 spines) and large number of supralabials (10–16, usually around 12). Interspecific uncorrected p- distances based on the 16S rDNA gene fragment are high, ranging from 3.9% between A. boueti and A. impalearis to 7.9% between A. spinosa and A. impalearis. The new species is sympatric with A. boueti at least in the Aïr Mountains and exhibits average mtDNA divergences of 6.2%, 7.4%, and 7.6% with A. spinosa, A. impalearis, and A. boueti, respectively. Agama boueti is paraphyletic relative to A. castroviejoi in the mtDNA tree, and mtDNA genetic divergences between populations of both species are lower than 1.0%, suggesting that A. castroviejoi is better treated as a junior synonym of A. boueti pending more detailed analyses. Scattered mountain ranges in the Sahara seem to have promoted lineage divergence and ultimately speciation in this group. Further work should be done to study species taxonomy and evolution in those areas.

Paracerella americana Imadate is redescribed based on the type material. The original description is corrected and supplemented with new characters, including head chaetotaxy, seta length, porotaxy and shape of the male squama genitalis. Paracerella monterey sp. nov. is described from specimens that were originally part of the "Paracerella americana type series". Paracerella americana is characterized by presence of seta P1a on tergites I-VI and absence of seta on tergite VII, presence of 4 P-setae on sternite I, and concave hind margin of the comb on tergite VIII. Paracerella monterey sp. nov. is characterized by absence of seta P1a on tergites I-VII, presence of 2 P-setae on sternite I, and straight hind margin of the comb. A key to Paracerella species is provided.
