DNA barcodes and morphology revealed three species masquerading in Xiphydria camelus of authors (Hymenoptera, Xiphydriidae) in Northeast Asia: X. eborata sp. rev. and X. albopicta sp. nov.

Taxonomic status of the widely spread xiphydriid woodwasp Xiphydria camelus (Linné, 1758) was revised by examining morphology of 964 specimens and by molecular analysis using COI barcode sequences. Both morphological and molecular approaches indicated existence of three separate species masquerading in X. camelus of authors in East Asia. The three species were finally determined as X. camelus, X. eborata Konow, 1899, and a new species, X. albopicta. Xiphydria eborata is revived from synonymy with X. camelus and X. albopicta is described as a new species from Russia (Primorskij Kraj), China (Heilongjiang) and Japan (Hokkaido). Collection records are given for all the specimens examined.

A new species, Dichoropetalum viarium (Apiaceae), is described from the Lorestan Province, Western Iran. The new species differs from D. paucijugum, D. aromaticum, and D. chryseum in the height, shape, diameter, and branching of the stem, shape of the terminal leaf lobes, shape of the bracteoles, shape and size of the mericarps, and shape of the stylopodium. In addition, D. viarium is recognized as a separate species by molecular analysis of nrITS.

Rhododendron baihuaense sp. nov. is described as a new species endemic to Yunnan, China, that has, to date, only been found in Baihualing on the eastern side of the Gaoligong Mountains. Morphologically, R. baihuaense can be readily distinguished from R. hanceanum and R. genestierianum, by its absent scales on mature leaves, only 2–5 flowers per inflorescence, the funnel-shaped flower and white corolla, and its slender and erect style. A molecular analysis based on the four standard DNA barcodes (rbcL, matK, trnH-psbA and ITS) indicates that R. baihuaense is genetically distinct from R. hanceanum and R. genestierianum, and, together with the morphological differences, is described here as a new species.

The identity of Isoperla curtata Navás, 1924, an Iberian endemic, has been questioned since its description. Marked variability in pigmentation, wing length, penial armature and ecology of populations have been noted. To clarify the taxonomic status of I. curtata we examined variation in mating calls and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences for two populations from north-central and southern Spain. Results of both approaches support the presence of two species. The north-central population corresponds to the nominal taxon, I. curtata, while southern populations represent a new species, Isoperla morenica, described herein.

A new species of Dipturus is described from ten specimens collected off Patagonia, Argentina. Morphological and molecular approaches were used to compare among specimens of recognized Dipturus species. By comparing morphometric, meristic and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) sequence data, specimens referred to as longnose skate and originally regarded as D. chilensis were shown to be a discrete species as distinguished from both the Yellownose skate, D. chilensis and the Roughskin skate, D. trachyderma. Dipturus argentinensis n. sp. can be distinguished from all other southwestern Atlantic longnose skate species by its color pattern, lack of squamation on both upper and lower surfaces of the disc, and a long, thin tail that is approximately half the total length. The new species has one median row of 10 to 24 small caudal thorns, one or two interdorsal thorns and 35 to 40, and 34 to 43 tooth rows on upper and lower jaws, respectively. The 648 base pair COI mitochondrial DNA “barcodes” derived from specimens of D. argentinensis are identical to each other and exhibit greater than 3% sequence divergence from all other Dipturus species similarly characterized to date. Taken together, these independent morphological and molecular observations serve to corroborate one another and thus provide strong evidence for the recognition of D. argentinensis as a new species.

The genus Rapisma McLachlan, 1866 (montane lacewings) is a rare and little known group of the family Ithonidae (Insecta: Neuroptera). There have been 21 described species of Rapisma, and all of them are distributed from East Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia. Here I report a new species of Rapisma from northwestern Yunnan, China, namely Rapisma weixiense sp. nov. The new species belongs to a group of Rapisma species with very short antennae.

The Atlantic Forest of Brazil includes one of the highest species diversity and endemism in the planet, representing a priority for biodiversity conservation. A new species of Anemopaegma from the Atlantic Forest of Brazil is here described, illustrated and compared to its closest relatives. Anemopaegma nebulosum Firetti-Leggieri & L.G. Lohmann has been traditionally treated as a morph of Anemopaegma prostratum; however, additional morphological and anatomical studies indicated that A. nebulosum differs significantly from A. prostratum and is best treated as a separate species. More specifically, A. nebulosum is characterized by elliptic and coriaceous leaflets (vs. ovate to orbicular and membranaceous in A. prostratum), smaller leaflet blades (3.6–5.5 x 2.0–3.0 cm vs. 6.7–13.0 x 4.2–8.4 cm in A. prostratum), orbicular prophylls of the axillary buds (vs. no prophylls in A. prostratum), solitary flowers (vs. multi-flowered axillary racemes in A. prostratum) and a gibbous corolla (vs. infundibuliform corollas in A. prostratum). In addition, A. nebulosum differs from A. prostratum anatomically in having thicker leaflet blades composed of two to four layers of palisade parenchyma (vs. one to three layers in A. prostratum), and seven to eight layers in the spongy parenchyma (vs. six to eight layers in A. prostratum). A key for the identification of all species of Anemopaegma from the Atlantic Forest of Brazil is presented.

A new species of slipper lobster of the genus Petrarctus Holthuis, 2002 was discovered from southwestern India during a survey of deep sea crustaceans. The new species closely resembles P. veliger Holthuis, 2002 from the Andaman Sea and western Pacific but differs mainly in the color marking on abdominal somite I, having a relatively lower cardiac tooth but with better developed tubercles on the abdomen, as well as a differently shaped anterior part of the thoracic sternum. Molecular genetic analysis also confirms the distinct taxonomic status of the new species. To fix the identity of the type species of the genus, a neotype of P. rugosus (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) was selected from a recently collected Indian specimen with color and genetic information.

Odontepyris costatus sp. nov. is described from Japan and Taiwan. This new species is most similar to O. formosicola Terayama, 1997 known from Cambodia and Taiwan according to the key to the Eastern Palaearctic Odontepyris. O. costatus sp. nov. can be distinguished from the latter by the relatively small eye and the wide metapectal-propodeal disc. It is also similar to O. telortis Lim & Lee, 2009 known from South Korea, but it is distinguished from O. telortis by the imbricate median area of metapostnotum. The morphological variations and diagnostic characters of the Eastern Palaearctic species are briefly discussed and the modified key to species is provided. Key words: new species, Japan, Taiwan, wing venation

Parapteronemobius contains 7 species or subspecies distributed in East Asia with only one species recorded from China. In this study, we reported the second species, P. chenggong He sp. nov., from Zhejiang. The new species differs from P. dibrachiatus in body size, male genitalia and COI gene. The phylogeny of this genus in subfamily Nemobiinae are discussed based on COI, 18S and 28S genes. The type specimens are deposited in the Museum of Biology, East China Normal University (ECNU).
