Zirconium Diboride (ZrB2) is known as an ultra-high temperature ceramic with applications in various industries like refractory and foundry industries. In conjunction with Silicon Carbide (SiC), ZrB2 ceramic finds extensive applications in the nose caps and leading edges of atmospheric re-entry vehicles and rocket propulsion. The primary objective is to optimize the output responses viz., Vickers micro hardness, relative density, compressive strength of ZrB2-30 vol.% SiC composites developed through microwave sintering. The three control factors viz., sintering temperature, heating rate and holding time are chosen as input process parameters for microwave sintering. Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal array is used to obtain experimental runs. The Grey Relational Taguchi provides the optimal process parameters by binding the multiple responses (relative density, vickers micro-hardness, and compressive strength) into single comprehensive response [i.e., Grey Relational Grade (GRG)]. The results confirm that the optimal parameters attained using Grey Relational Taguchi maximize the performance characteristics of the microwave sintering process.

Reaming is one of the finishing processes that have been widely applied in manufacturing industries. Reaming of Titanium Ti-6Al-4V alloy material is an important and current research topic on manufacturing processes. Optimal process parameter setting is an important element in the machinability study of Titanium Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Optimization has most significant importance, particularly for reaming operations. This research work focuses on the multi-response optimization of reaming process parameters using the Taguchi and Grey relational technique to obtain minimum cutting temperature (T), thrust force (Ft), torque (Mt), surface roughness (Ra) and hole quality. The experiments were performed on Titanium Ti-6Al-4V alloy using uncoated carbide straight shank reamer under wet and cryogenic LN2 conditions. Eighteen experimental runs (L18) based on the Taguchi method of orthogonal arrays were performed to determine the best factor level condition. The environment, cutting speed and feed rate were selected as control factors. Grey relational analysis was used to determine the most significant control factors affecting the output parameters. Grey relational grade obtained from the grey relational analysis was used to solve the reaming process with the optimal levels of the multiple performance characteristics responses were established. The optimum results indicate that the reaming results have been improved in wet coolant than the cryogenic LN2 condition.

The SiCp performing sample was made first then Al/SiCp (65%) was manufactured. Appropriate component and proportion of binder and process parameters were selected to control the porosity. Debinding has succeeded by extractive and thermal debinding processes. SiCp preforming samples with good appearance, enough strength, and right porosity were obtained by pre-sintering process at 1100°C. Composites with high density and homogeneous microstructure were manufactured by pressure infiltration under 1050°C and 15MPa. The distribution of aluminium and silicon elements was homogeneous. The primary components of materials are aluminium, β-SiC and α-SiC. The thermal expand coefficient of composites is 8.0×10-6/°C at room temperature, which increases with temperature and reaches to 11.0×10-6/°C at 300°C. The density is 2.92g/cm3, and relative density is more than 97 %. The strength is about 500MPa, approaching to the upper limit of the theoretical value.

Abstract The present work investigated the use of the Vickers micro-hardness test method to determine the resistance of individual die to cracking. The results are used as an indicator of resistance to failure under the thermal and mechanical stresses of packaging and subsequent thermal cycling. Indentation measurements on die back surfaces are used to determine how changes in wafer backside processing conditions affect cracks that form around impressions produced at different loads. Test methodology and results obtained at different processing conditions are discussed.

AbstractSurface roughness and heat-affected zone (HAZ) are the important features which influence the performance of the laser-drilled products. Understanding the influence of laser process parameters on these responses and identifying the cutting conditions for simultaneous optimization of these responses are a primary requirement in order to improve the laser drilling performance. Nevertheless, no such contribution has been made in the literature during laser drilling of AISI 303 material. The aim of the present work is to optimize the surface roughness (Ra) and HAZ in fibre laser drilling of AISI 303 material using Taguchi-based grey relational analysis (GRA). From the GRA methodology, the recommended optimum combination of process parameters is flushing pressure at 30 Pa, laser power at 2000 W and pulse frequency at 1500 Hz for simultaneous optimization of Ra and HAZ, respectively. From analysis of variance, the pulse frequency is identified as the most influenced process parameters on laser drilling process performance.

It is very important and complexity to find the optimum values of wire EDM process parameters and contribution of each parameter to attain the better performance characteristics. In this study, an attempt has been made to optimize those parameters while machining the titanium alloy. Since the process involves more one than one response parameter, it is essential to carry out the multi-response optimization methodology .The experiments have been conducted with different levels of input factors such as pulse on time, pulse off time and wire tension based on Taguchi L9 orthogonal table.Wire EDM optimal process parameter has been identified using grey relational analysis and significant parameter has been determined by analysis of variance. Experimental results have indicated that the multi-response characteristic such as material removal rate and surface roughness can be improved effectively through grey relational analysis.
