The bio-reduction method is reported as a part of a complimentary self-sustained technology, where bioremediation and metal particle production are related. The use of the characterization methods in this self sustainable technique open the expectative to be used for several other elements and with other plants, which will be discussed. However, the particular case of Mn nanoparticles involves an important option to generate nanoparticles in the range of 1–4 nanometers with a well controlled size and with a structure based on an fcc-like geometry for the smallest clusters and with more complex arrays for cluster greater than four shells, which involves magnetic moments significantly related to their atomistic configuration. At the same time, the use of the characterization methods establishes the dependence of the nanoparticle's size on the pH conditions used during the synthesis; small clusters in the range of 1–2 nm were generated using pH = 5, and it was shown that for the smallest aggregates, simple polyhedron shapes are stable.

The paper presents the synthesis and characterization of Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), Zn(II) and Hg(II) complexes with N1-[4-(4-bromo-phenylsulfonyl)-benzoyl]-N4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-thiosemicarbazide. The new compounds were characterized by IR, EPR, electronic spectroscopy, magnetic moments, thermo-gravimetric analysis and elemental analysis.

Superfine mesocarbon microbead powders (SFMCMBs) as the new supports for platinum electrocatalysts were first investigated. The Pt∕SFMCMB electrocatalysts were prepared by an impregnation-reduction method, with hexachloroplatinic acid as the platinum precursor and formaldehyde as the reducing agent. The catalysts were characterized with x-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission gun transmission electron microscope (TEM), and electrochemical analysis. TEM photos showed the platinum particles were dispersed uniformly on the surface of SFMCMBs and there existed a little aggregation of platinum particles in the Pt∕SFMCMB catalysts. The TEM photos showed the existence of the platinum on the supports where the average platinum particle size were 4-6nm. The electrochemical analysis proved that SFMCMBs are excellent candidates to be used as the support of platinum electrocatalyst for methanol electrochemical oxidation as the potential catalyst candidate for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs).

The objective of this study was to characterize and correlate maturity and quality of the first varieties of Brazilian seedless grapes 'BRS Clara', 'BRS Linda', 'BRS Morena', and 'Advanced Selection 8' compared with the American variety 'Crimson Seedless' in compliance with the Brazilian Normative/2002 and export standards Advanced Selection 8' is dark reddish, has large clusters, and is a very large ellipsoid berry; 'BRS Morena' is black with medium sized clusters and large berry shaped as ellipsoid to globoid; 'BRS Linda' is light green and has large sized clusters; 'Crimson' is pink and has small clusters with berries varying from medium to large sizes and ellipsoid shaped; and 'BRS Clara' is green yellowish has medium sized clusters and small berry of elongated ellipsoid shape. All varieties evaluated meet the standard for domestic market established as berry size minimum diameter 12 mm. 'BRS Clara' does not meet the export requirements of diameter. Berries of the red grapes 'BRS Morena' and 'Crimson Seedless' are firmer. The pH, titratable acidity, and soluble solids meet the official standards. Larger clusters are less acidic and present higher soluble solids/titratable acidity ratios implying that they are the sweetest type when ripe.

Compliant shell mechanisms utilize spatially curved thin-walled structures to transfer or transmit force, motion or energy through elastic deformation. To design with spatial mechanisms designers need comprehensive characterization methods, while existing methods fall short of meaningful comparisons between rotational and translational degrees of freedom. This paper presents two approaches, both of which are based on the principle of virtual loads and potential energy, utilizing properties of screw theory, Plücker coordinates and an eigen-decomposition, leading to two unification lengths that can be used to compare and visualize all six degrees of freedom directions and magnitudes of compliant mechanisms in a non-arbitrary physically meaningful manner.

AbstractCephalaspideans are a group of opisthobranch gastropods comprising carnivorous and herbivorous species, allowing an investigation of the relationship between these diets and the morphofunctional features of the salivary glands.In this study, the salivary glands of the carnivorous cephalaspidean Philinopsis depicta were observed by light microscopy using semithin sections and by transmission electron microscopy. A central duct runs along the length of these thin ribbon-shaped glands dividing them in two halves, each formed by a single row of tubules perpendicularly attached to the central duct. The simple epithelium of the central duct and lateral tubes contains ciliated cells and two types of secretory cells, named granular cells and cells with apical vacuole (Fig. 1). A very thin outer layer of connective tissue covers the epithelium (Fig. 1). The ciliated cells are numerous but very thin, forming small clusters between secretory cells. The nucleus, several mitochondria and a few lysosomes are located in the apical region were the cells are wider. A very thin cytoplasmic stalk reaches the base of the epithelium and contains bundles of filaments in addition to some mitochondria.
