Strong Blue, green, and red upconversion emission of Er3+ in nanocrystalline BaZrO3:(Yb3+Er3+) is observed. Powder samples were obtained by a facile hydrothermal process at 100 °C. The as synthesized nanocrystallites preserve a stable cubic perovskite phase under subsequent annealing treatment up to 1000 °C. No other phase or segregation of other compounds was detected. Crystallites sizes were around 115 nm and well faceted. Under IR excitation in the range between 900 and 1050 nm the Er3+ blue emission was almost not present in single Er3+ doped BaZrO3, whereas it became easily observable when Yb3+ was added as codopant. Besides, both green and red upconversion emission or upconverted signal of Er3+ are enhanced by around three orders of magnitude in comparison with the single Er3+ doped BaZrO3. The strong blue emission presents dependence on both excitation power and excitation wavelength. This is the first time that upconversion emission is observed in BaZrO3. A possible mechanism for the upconversion process that leads to the observed blue, green and red emissions under NIR excitation is suggested based on the experimental results.

In this paper, highly crystalline YF 3: Yb 3+/ Ln 3+( Ln = Er 3+, Tm 3+) microsheets were successfully synthesized by a surfactant-free molten salt method for the first time. The results indicated that the as-obtained samples belonged to orthorhombic system and exhibited microsheets morphology with side lengths of 30 to 80 μm and wall thickness from 1 to 1.5 μm. By changing the dopant's species ( Ln 3+), multicolor (yellow and blue) upconversion emission can be observed in YF 3: Yb 3+/ Ln 3+ microsheets under 980 nm laser diode (LD) excitation. The upconversion mechanisms in co-doping YF 3 samples were analyzed in detail based on the emission spectra. Importantly, this approach not only proposes a new alternative in synthesizing such materials, but also opens the possibility to meet the increasing commercial demand.

The laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy was systematically utilized for remote sensing of different soils and rocks for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy measurements were carried out by the developed nanosecond LIDAR instrument with variable excitation wavelength (355, 532 and 1064 nm). LIDAR sensing of different Brazil soil samples have been carried out in order to construct a spectral database. The laser induced fluorescence spectra interpretation for different samples has been discussed in detail. The perspectives of LIDAR sensing of organic samples deposited at soils and rock have been discussed including future space exploration missions in the search for extraterrestrial life.

This paper presents a novel mechanochemical synthesis technique for making nano-structured Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) ferroelectric material without annealing treatment in a much shorter time and at much lower temperature than those reported in the literature, by using the starting precursors MgO, PbO, and Nb2O5. Specimens of various milling time (3-6h) are characterized from XRD patterns to track and analyze the synthesizing procedure of this mechanochemical processing route. The time used to make the desired PMN powders varies with different milling power. When the constituent oxides were mechanically activated at 1.8KW milling power for 6h, the perovskite phase PMN powder was obtained; while it was formed when milling at 3KW for only 3h. Typical SEM images of the as-received PMN powders show that the powders are aggregated of nano-particles of about 100nm in size.
