Objectives: Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the surgical efficacy and risk factors of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) patients with increased signal intensity (ISI) on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI-T2WI). Methods: We compared the surgical outcomes of CSM patients with and without ISI. In addition, we compared the efficacy of anterior and posterior cervical decompression in CSM patients with ISI. We also analyzed the risk factors of MRI-T2WI ISI in CSM patients. Results: The incidence of ISI among 153 CSM patients was 71.89%. The JOA score and JOA remission rate were better in the ISI-free than ISI group. The postoperative JOA score and JOA remission rate were better in the posterior than anterior approach surgery group. The disease duration and vertebral canal volume were risk factors for ISI in CSM patients. Conclusion: Among patients with CSM, the prognosis is worse for those with than without ISI. Posterior cervical decompression surgery produces a better curative effect than does anterior cervical decompression surgery in CSM patients with ISI. CSM patients who have a long disease duration and small vertebral canal volume should undergo surgical treatment as early as possible.

Background: Tuberculosis is one of the top 10 leading causes of death worldwide. Although tuberculous central complications account for 1% of all tuberculosis patients, there are many cases of medical resistance; and early surgical treatment is required for brain abscess. Reports on tuberculous brain abscesses with dural infiltration are rare, and there are no reports on surgical treatment methods. Case Description: An 81-year-old man was presented with the right arm paresis. His recent medical history included a 6-month course of immunosuppressants, and steroids prescribed for ulcerative colitis, and four antituberculosis drugs had been started 2 months before for relapse of pulmonary tuberculosis at an early age. Head T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging with administration of gadolinium showed two ring-enhanced lesions in the left precentral gyrus and continuous with the dura mater. Surgery was performed and he was pathologically diagnosed with a tuberculous brain abscess. Since the pathological diagnosis revealed dura mater invasion, we removed the dura mater and reconstructed by periosteum. After the surgery, the symptoms gradually improved, and the abscess and edema improved when viewed on the image. Despite the administration of steroids for ulcerative colitis without antituberculosis drugs, no recurrence was observed for 1 year. Recurrence of tuberculous brain abscess is a major problem in immunosuppressed patients, but it is considered that the relapse could be prevented by removing the dural infiltration. Conclusion: In cases of tuberculous brain abscess with dural infiltration, it is considered that the recurrence can be prevented even in an immunosuppressed state by removing the dura.

Abstract Objective To investigate the association between the volume of amygdala subnuclei and violent behaviors in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). Methods In the present study, we recruited 40 SCZ patients with violent behaviors (VS), 26 SCZ patients without violent behaviors (NVS), and 28 matched healthy controls (HC) who completed T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Both the total amygdala and amygdala subnuclei volumes were estimated with FreeSurfer. Results When comparing the whole SCZ patients with HC, SCZ patients had smaller volume of the left amygdala and the left basal nucleus. Further, the VS patients had smaller volume of the amygdala central nucleus as compared to the NVS group. Conclusions Our findings suggested that a smaller volume of the amygdala central nucleus might be relevant to violence risk in SCZ patients.

Abstract Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is one of the main palliative therapies for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is also regarded as a promising therapeutic strategy for cancer treatment. However, drug-loaded microspheres (DLMs), as commonly used clinical chemoembolization drugs, still have the problems of uneven particle size and unstable therapeutic efficacy. Herein, gelatin was used as the wall material of the microspheres, and homogenous gelatin microspheres co-loaded with adriamycin and Fe3O4 nanoparticles (ADM/Fe3O4-MS) were further prepared by a high-voltage electrospray technology. The introduction of Fe3O4 nanoparticles into DLMs not only provided excellent T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) properties, but also improved the anti-tumor effectiveness under microwave-induced hyperthermia. The results showed that ADM/Fe3O4-MS plus microwave irradiation had significantly better antitumor efficacy than the other types of microspheres at both cell and animal levels. Our study further confirmed that ferroptosis was involved in the anti-tumor process of ADM/Fe3O4-MS plus microwave irradiation, and ferroptosis marker GPX4 was significantly decreased and ACSL4 was significantly increased, and ferroptosis inhibitors could reverse the tumor cell killing effect caused by ADM/Fe3O4-MS to a certain extent. Our results confirmed that microwave mediated hyperthermia could amplify the antitumor efficacy of ADM/Fe3O4-MS by activating ferroptosis and the introduction of Fe3O4 nanoparticles can significantly improve TACE for HCC. This study confirmed that it was feasible to use uniform-sized gelatin microspheres co-loaded with Fe3O4 nanoparticles and adriamycin to enhance the efficacy of TACE for HCC.
