Excellent Gas Sensing of CdS Nanowires Decorated with Ag Nanoparticles

In this study, CdS nanowires (NWs)/Ag nanoparticle materials (CdS@Ag) with Schottky junction were synthesized by a simple process. The Ag nanoparticles with a diameter of 3–10 nm were uniformly scattered on the surface of CdS NWs with an average diameter of 30 nm. The gas sensing properties and the effect of Ag content and relative humidity on the ethanol sensing properties of CdS NWs were investigated in detail. When the relative humidity was below 60% RH, the sensor, especially the one based on [email protected], exhibited an enhanced ethanol sensing response and selectivity compared with that of pristine CdS NWs, which was believed that Ag catalyzed the reaction between ionized oxygen species and ethanol. However, excessive Ag content does not mean a higher response and even decreased the response. Also, the stability of CdS NWs and CdS@Ag NWs was also investigated, which were almost stable for four months.

CdS nanowires (NWs) with an average diameter of 30 nm were synthesized by a solvothermal method and then Au nanoparticles with a size of 10–25 nm were decorated on the surface of the as-synthesized CdS NWs through a simple deposition process.

The nanocrystallineLa1-xNdxFeO3(0≤x ≤1.0) powders with orthorhombic perovskite phase were prepared by sol-gel method. The average crystallite sizes ofLa1-xNdxFeO3powders are about 20 nm. The resistance and gas-sensing properties of theLa1-xNdxFeO3based sensors were investigated in the temperature range from 160 to 300°C. The results demonstrated that the resistance and response of the perovskite thick films changed with the increase of Nd content.

SnO2/In2O3 composite nanofibers were synthesized by using an electrospinning system with double jets, then, treated by oxygen plasma. The morphology and structure of treated composite nanofibers were analyzed by SEM and XRD. The treated composite nanofibers showed more irregular and rough. The porosity of the treated composite nanofibers was bigger than the one of untreated. The gas sensing properties of the composite nanofibers to formaldehyde were measured before and after materials treated by oxygen plasma. The treated composite nanofibers exhibit large response values. Cross-responses and humidity effection of the treated composite nanofibers sensor were tested. The sensing mechanism of the SnO2/In2O3 composite nanofibers gas sensor treated by oxygen plasma was briefly analyzed.

In2O3andIn2O3:Ag nanoparticle layers have been deposited using a two-step method consisting of chemical capping and dip coating techniques. The result of optical absorption analysis ofIn2O3:Ag samples shows the presence ofAg2Oand Ag in air-annealed and vacuum-annealed samples, respectively. These results have been correlated with the gas sensing properties of these layers towards ethanol and support the proposed mechanism that increase in sensor response on Ag addition is due to the conversion ofAg2Oto Ag in the presence of ethanol.

Ag nanoparticle functionalized TiO2nanowire (TiO2NW @ Ag NP) was synthesized and the gas sensing properties of the nanowire film was investigated. The size and the distribution density of Ag nanoparticles can be easily controlled. The sensor based on Ag nanoparticle functionalized TiO2 nanowire thin film has promising sensing properties, and at room temperature, its sensitivity towards H2and O2can reach 500 ppm and 1000 ppm respectively.
