The authors examine three phases in the unionization process among Imperial Oil Limited employees in Canada who, in 1993, decided to withdraw from a long-standing nonunion employee representation plan: the conditions leading to the propensity to unionize; the transformation into a bargaining unit; and post-certification behaviors and practices. The unionization process in this case study differed from that suggested by literature based on unionization among workers without a previous history of collective representation. In the pre-campaign phase, workers experienced a significant loss of perceived power due to changes in company practices and managerial style. Elected worker delegates to the nonunion representation plan spearheaded the union campaign. The union organizing phase allowed the company multiple opportunities for redress without unionization. Subsequent union attachment was diminished by continuing loyalty to aspects of the old system.

This article describes the case of a 56 year old man with no previous history of psychological disorder who became depressed following neurosurgery to remove a benign subapendenoma. The patient was unresponsive to 20 months of treatment with, successively, desipramine, amitriptyline, and doxepin before showing good response to standard cognitive therapy alone. Complete remission of symptoms was achieved at 15 sessions (15 weeks) of treatment. One and five month follow-ups indicate that treatment gains were maintained.

Verucae or plantar warts is a painful skin condition that demonstrates a high resistance to various treatments. They can be caused by trauma or human papilloma virus. The infection is mostly caused by a breach in the skin. The virus is usually contacted by walking barefoot in community swimming pool areas. The condition is common in sports persons. Our research focused on warts that occur on plantar surface of foot also known as plantar warts. They result in pain with pressure on weight bearing surfaces so walking is difficult and painful. Risk factors include using community showers barefoot, previous history of warts and decreased immune function. Case Report: We present a case report of a female aged 24 years who was clinically diagnosed with plantar wart. She developed recurrent plantar warts. For a year she was treated with pairing and punch excision with no success. Then ultrasound program was initiated with dosage of 0.6 watt /cm2 and increased up to 1 watt/cm2 for 15 min given at 1-week interval for 15 weeks. At the end of 15th week, the plantar wart had completely disappeared.

This article introduces the SMALL project, its key research questions and methodology. It places SMEs within the context of the wider European economy. It sets out the data on union membership in SMEs which suggest that across Europe union membership is lower than in larger organisations. It then looks at rights to representation in SMEs and how thresholds based upon the number of employees reduce the potential for representation. The article explores collective bargaining coverage in SMEs. It considers the relationship between centralised collective bargaining systems and union membership in SMEs and the extent to which such systems can protect the terms and conditions of workers, drawing upon the case study evidence to suggest that such systems do not always ensure collective representation and organisation at workplace level. The article concludes by considering the steps that unions may need to take to address this.

In recent years researchers in financial management have shown considerable interest in predicting future takeover target companies in merger and acquisition (M&A) scenarios. However, most of these predictions are based upon multiple instances of previous takeovers. Now consider a company that is at the early stage of its acquisition spree and therefore has only limited data of possibly only a single previous takeover. Traditional studies on M&A, based upon statistical records of multiple previous takeovers, may not be suitable for suggesting future takeover targets for this company since the lack of history data strongly limits the applicability of statistical techniques. The challenge then is to extract as much knowledge as possible from the single/limited takeover history in order to guide this company during future takeover selections. Under such an extreme case, the authors present a new algorithmic approach for suggesting future takeover targets for acquiring companies based on solely one previous history of acquisition. The approach is based upon methods originating from information retrieval and computational intelligence. The proposal is exemplified upon a case study using real financial data of companies from the Indian software industry.

Abstract Gallstone ileus is caused by an impaction of one or more gallstones within the gastrointestinal tract leading to mechanical intestinal obstruction. It is a rare complication of cholelithiasis and found in 2–3% of all cases associated with recurrent episodes of cholecystitis. This case study demonstrates an atypical presentation of gallstone ileus. A 57-year-old woman was presented with abdominal pain and vomiting without previous history of gallstone disease. The features of gallstone ileus are evident on computed tomography. She underwent an emergency laparotomy and enterotomy for the removal of impacting gallstones, followed by an interval cholecystectomy and cholecystoduodenal fistula closure. This case report aims to explore the proper surgical management of gallstone ileus. Unfortunately, the question of whether interval biliary surgery should be performed remains unanswered, and surgeons will continue to make the decision based on their clinical judgement.

Skin manifestations have been reported in up to 20% of cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection, including morbilliform rash (22%), pernio-like acral lesions (18%), urticaria (16%), and macular erythema (13%). It is believed that in the case of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the mechanism involved is an inflammatory response that generates immune dysregulation, vascular congestion, vasculitis, vascular thrombosis, or neoangiogenesis. This case study, present the case of a patient with no previous history of urticarial reactions, autoimmune diseases, or exposure to medications who develops generalized urticaria lasting more than 24 hours and who was diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection by RT-PCR with a nasopharyngeal swab. We suggest in this patient vasculitic urticaria as a manifestation of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The aim of this paper is to present the results of the research on the reality that young migrant women face in prison, trying to analyze whether they, judging by their own speech, consider themselves victims of some sorts of discrimination in Malaga?s prison. The main objective is to get to know the previous history of women before entry to prison, their criminal experience, experience in the judicial process and their daily activities in the penitentiary centre, as well as the treatment received by the prison staff. In addition, the paper tries to explain the expectations for the future of these young women after their release. The final conclusions reflect a very complicated situation for women living in Malaga prison, especially when factors such as age and migration are also involved.
