Defects in product packaging are one of the key factors that affect product sales. Traditional defect detection depends primarily on artificial vision detection. With the rapid development of machine vision, image processing, pattern recognition, and other technologies, industrial automation detection has become an inevitable trend because machine vision technology can greatly improve accuracy and efficiency; therefore, it is of great practical value to study automatic detection technology of the surface defects encountered in packaging boxes. In this study, machine vision and machine learning were combined to examine a surface defect detection method based on support vector machine where defective products are eliminated by a sorting robot system. After testing, the support vector machine training model using radial basis function kernel detects three kinds of defects at the same time under the ideal condition of parameter selection, and the effective detection rate is 98.0296%.

A camera based machine vision system for the automatic inspection of surface defects in aluminum die casting is presented. The system uses a hybrid image processing algorithm based on mathematic morphology to detect defects with different sizes and shapes. The defect inspection algorithm consists of two parts. One is a parameter learning algorithm, in which a genetic algorithm is used to extract optimal structuring element parameters, and segmentation and noise removal thresholds. The second part is a defect detection algorithm, in which the parameters obtained by a genetic algorithm are used for morphological operations. The machine vision system has been applied in an industrial setting to detect two types of casting defects: parts mix-up and any defects on the surface of castings. The system performs with a 99% or higher accuracy for both part mix-up and defect detection and is currently used in industry as part of normal production.

A machine vision system was developed to investigate the detection of watermelon seeds exterior quality. The main characteristics of watermelon seeds appearance including area, perimeter, roughness and minimum enclosing rectangle were calculated by image analysis. Least square support vector machine optimized by genetic algorithm was applied for the classification of watermelon seeds exterior quality, and the broken seeds, normal seeds and high-quality seeds were distinguished finally. The surface irregularities defects of watermelon seeds were detected by machine vision grid laser. The experimental results show that the watermelon seeds exterior quality could be well detected and classified by machine vision based on least squares support vector machine.

The rapid development of machine vision has prompted the continuous emergence of new detection systems and algorithms in surface defect detection. However, most of the existing methods establish their systems with few comparisons and verifications, and the methods described still have various problems. Thus, an original defect detection method: Segmented Embedded Rapid Defect Detection Method for Surface Defects (SERDD) is proposed in this paper. This method realizes the two-way fusion of image processing and defect detection, which can efficiently and accurately detect surface defects such as depression, scratches, notches, oil, shallow characters, abnormal dimensions, etc. Besides, the character recognition method based on Spatial Pyramid Character Proportion Matching (SPCPM) is used to identify the engraved characters on the bearing dust cover. Moreover, the problem of characters being cut in coordinate transformation is solved through Image Self-Stitching-and-Cropping (ISSC). This paper adopts adequate real image data to verify and compare the methods and proves the effectiveness and advancement through detection accuracy, missing alarm rate, and false alarm rate. This method can provide machine vision technical support for bearing surface defect detection in its real sense.

This study proposes a method and device for the intelligent mobile monitoring of oestrus on a sow farm, applied in the field of sow production. A bionic boar model that imitates the sounds, smells, and touch of real boars was built to detect the oestrus of sows after weaning. Machine vision technology was used to identify the interactive behaviour between empty sows and bionic boars and to establish deep belief network (DBN), sparse autoencoder (SAE), and support vector machine (SVM) models, and the resulting recognition accuracy rates were 96.12%, 98.25%, and 90.00%, respectively. The interaction times and frequencies between the sow and the bionic boar and the static behaviours of both ears during heat were further analysed. The results show that there is a strong correlation between the duration of contact between the oestrus sow and the bionic boar and the static behaviours of both ears. The average contact duration between the sows in oestrus and the bionic boars was 29.7 s/3 min, and the average duration in which the ears of the oestrus sows remained static was 41.3 s/3 min. The interactions between the sow and the bionic boar were used as the basis for judging the sow’s oestrus states. In contrast with the methods of other studies, the proposed innovative design for recyclable bionic boars can be used to check emotions, and machine vision technology can be used to quickly identify oestrus behaviours. This approach can more accurately obtain the oestrus duration of a sow and provide a scientific reference for a sow’s conception time.

The meteorological reanalysis data has been widely applied to derive zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) with a high spatial and temporal resolution. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, machine learning also begins as a high-efficiency tool to be employed in modeling and predicting ZTD. In this paper, we develop three new regional ZTD models based on the least squares support vector machine (LSSVM), using both the International GNSS Service (IGS)-ZTD products and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5 (ERA5) data over Europe throughout 2018. Among them, the ERA5 data is extended to ERA5S-ZTD and ERA5P-ZTD as the background data by the model method and integral method, respectively. Depending on different background data, three schemes are designed to construct ZTD models based on the LSSVM algorithm, including the without background data, with the ERA5S-ZTD, and with the ERA5P-ZTD. To investigate the advantage and feasibility of the proposed ZTD models, we evaluate the accuracy of two background data and three schemes by segmental comparison with the IGS-ZTD of 85 IGS stations in Europe. The results show that the overall average Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) value of all sites is 30.1 mm for the ERA5S-ZTD, and 10.7 mm for the ERA5P-ZTD. The overall average RMSE is 25.8 mm, 22.9 mm, and 9 mm for the three schemes, respectively. Moreover, the overall improvement rate is 19.1% and 1.6% for the ZTD model with ERA5S-ZTD and ERA5P-ZTD, respectively. In order to explore the reason of the lower improvement for the ZTD model with ERA5P-ZTD, the loop verification is performed by estimating the ZTD values of each available IGS station. In actuality, the monthly improvement rate of estimated ZTD is positive for most stations, and the biggest improvement rate can even reach about 40%. The negative rate mainly comes from specific stations, these stations are located on the edge of the region, near the coast, as well as the lower similarity between the individual verified station and training stations.

We introduce a real-time machine vision system we developed with the aim of detecting defects in functional textile fabrics with good precision at relatively fast detection speeds to assist in textile industry quality control. The system consists of image acquisition hardware and image processing software. The software we developed uses data preprocessing techniques to break down raw images to smaller suitable sizes. Filtering is employed to denoise and enhance some features. To generalize and multiply the data to create robustness, we use data augmentation, which is followed by labeling where the defects in the images are labeled and tagged. Lastly, we utilize YOLOv4 for localization where the system is trained with weights of a pretrained model. Our software is deployed with the hardware that we designed to implement the detection system. The designed system shows strong performance in defect detection with precision of [Formula: see text], and recall and [Formula: see text] scores of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively. The detection speed is relatively fast at [Formula: see text] fps with a prediction speed of [Formula: see text] ms. Our system can automatically locate functional textile fabric defects with high confidence in real time.
