Effects of vacuum infusion processing parameters on the impact behavior of carbon fiber reinforced cyclic butylene terephthalate composites

Scarf adhesive joints have attracted an increasing attention in joining/repairing of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite structures due to their zero eccentricity, which provides lower stress distribution across the adhesive layer and better aerodynamic surfaces compared to other bonded joints. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the scarf adhesive joints in carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites under thermomechanical impact loads, which is very important for the aerospace and automotive industries. The adhesive was modified with optimum percentage of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The impact tests were performed at 25 ℃, 50 ℃, and 75 ℃. The residual flexural properties of the unfailed impacted joints were measured using three-point bending test. Results from impact tests at 25 ℃, 50 ℃, and 75 ℃ showed improvement in the impact bending stiffness of the modified scarf adhesive joints by 8.3%, 7.4%, and 11.8% and maximum contact force by 15.6%, 21.3%, and 18.9%, respectively. The energy at failure of the modified scarf adhesive joints with multiwalled carbon nanotubes was improved by 15.2% and 16.4% respectively at 25 ℃ and 50 ℃. At test temperature of 75 ℃, the scarf adhesive joints have hysteresis load–displacement behavior and energy–time curve with rebound energy of 35% and absorbed (damage) energy of 65%. The residual flexural strength of the modified and unmodified scarf adhesive joints is 98.2% and 86.1% respectively, while their residual moduli have remarkable decrease to 71.7% and 81.3%.

Promising carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (CF/polyetherketoneketone (PEKK)) composites were fabricated by the state-of-the-art technology known as “Automated Fiber Placement.” The mechanical properties of CF/PEKK were evaluated for four different postprocessing methods: in situ consolidation, annealing, vacuum bag only (VBO), and hot press (HP). The evaluation was performed by narrowing down the relevant processing parameters (temperature and layup speed). Furthermore, the void content and crystallinity of CF/PEKK were measured to determine the effect of these postprocessing processes. The HP process resulted in the best quality with the highest interlaminar shear strength, highest crystallinity degree, and lowest void content. The second most effective method was VBO, and annealing also realized an improvement compared with in situ consolidation. The correlation between the postprocessing method and the void content and crystallinity degree was also discussed.

In this study, a carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite was fabricated using a new aromatic polyamide (APA) as a matrix. Non-isothermal crystallization behaviors in the cooling process of APA resin (a semi-crystalline polymer) and composite were analyzed by using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). To determine the optimum molding conditions, processing parameters such as the molding temperature and time were varied during compression molding of the Carbon/APA composite. The tensile and flexural properties and morphologies of the fabricated composites were analyzed. Molding at 270 °C and 50 MPa for 5 min. showed relatively good mechanical properties and morphologies; thus, this condition was selected as the optimal molding condition. In addition, to enhance the thermal conductivity of the Carbon/APA composite, a study was conducted to add hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as a filler. The surface of h-BN was oxidized to increase its miscibility in the resin, which resulted in better dispersity in the APA matrix. In conclusion, a Carbon/APA (h-BN) composite manufactured under optimal molding conditions with an APA resin containing surface-treated h-BN showed a thermal conductivity more than twice that of the case without h-BN.
