In this paper, a non-fragile optimal observer is proposed for the decentralized multiphase flow measurement based on the interconnections between the two subsystems, that is, gas and liquid, constituting the whole system. Due to the dynamic model of system and presence of disturbances and slowly varying quantities, a non-fragile decentralized observer is designed and the states of the condensate and gas sub-systems were separately estimated. Lyapunov-based stability conditions are converted to linear matrix inequality (LMI) and observer gains are optimally selected from solution set such that the effect of the disturbance on the states’ estimation error becomes minimized. The estimation is conducted using the real-time measurements including lines pressures, single-phase gas flow, and single-phase liquid flow in the refinery outlet. To check the stability and performance of the system against the changes, the Lyapunov theory has been used. Finally, the estimation results are compared with real-world data from the industry showing the high accuracy of this method as the estimations were consistent with the operation data. In all stages, the investigations were based on the data collected from the actual process in the South Pars Gas Complex (SPGC), Iran. Additionally, the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) based on the simplified drift flux model (DFM) was used to estimate the states then both methods’ results are compared and using the HYSYS simulator with the real process data, it is found that both observers are capable to identify the states with some differences in performance and DFM model is sufficient for estimation of parameters and states of the multiphase flow entering the gas refinery. As a result, these techniques not only can be substituted for the existing system at the gas refinery, but also can be as a backup for available measurement systems.

Electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) is one of process tomography technique which is developed rapidly in recent years. ECT is an imaging technique to obtain the internal permittivity distribution of a vessel or pipe by using capacitance electrodes sensor. This method has been integrated with ultrasonic tomography as multimodality system to perform multiphase flow measurement such as crude oil separation and oil process industry. In the present paper, a novel type of ECT sensor was developed using copper FR4 material. The electrode sensors can be flexibly bend or curve to fit the pipe surface for optimum measurement. Thus, every single sensor strip is designed to be functioned independently. Such system has lower sensing capability in the central of the sensing area which often contributes to poor imaging result. This problem can be overcome by combining the ECT with ultrasonic tomography to form a dual modality tomography system. By implementing the new ECT sensor, multiphase flow measurement image results can be achieved. The reconstructed image results are presented in this paper.

The most widely used single-phase asynchronous motors are described and also substitution and vector dia-grams are reviewed. Theoretical and mathematical descriptions of processes of controlling and enabling asynchronous modes of operation were provided, on the basis of which computer models of a single-phase asynchronous motor in static and dynamic modes was created in the Matlab program. Experiments were per-formed on the real and virtual models, and the data obtained were processed and compared to confirm the adequacy of the developed virtual model.

Over the last decade, the development and deployment of in-line multiphase flow metering systems has been a major focus worldwide. Accurate measurement of multiphase flow in the oil and gas industry is difficult because it occurs in wide range of flow regimes and multiphase meters do not generally perform well under the intermittent slug flow conditions which commonly occur in oil production. A novel ultrasonic multiphase metering concept has been proposed and investigated which measures the flow rates of the liquid and gas phases from ultrasonic measurements made in two different flow regimes – partially separated and homogeneous — in the same measurement system and fuses the data from the different flow regimes to obtain improved overall measurement accuracy. The system employs a partial gas/liquid separation using a T-junction configuration and a combination of Doppler and cross correlation. The partially separated flow regimes uses ultrasonic cross correlation measurement for the liquid flow measurement which has gas entrained within it. The homogeneous regime employs ultrasonic Doppler method. This approach has been tested on water/air flows on a 50mm facility in the Department of Process and Systems Engineering. The liquid and gas flowrate measurements using the proposed techniques were compared with a reference measurement and good agreements between these two measurements were obtained with error ranging from ± 2% and 10%, respectively. Such a performance offers the potential for an in-line multiphase flowmeter with improved performance.

Managed pressure drilling (MPD) is a drilling technique used to address the narrow density window under complex geological environments. It has widespread applications in the exploration and exploitation of oil and gas, both onshore and offshore. In this study, to achieve effective control of the downhole pressure to ensure safety, a gas–liquid two-phase flow model based on the drift flux model is developed to describe the characteristics of transient multiphase flow in the wellbore. The advection upwind splitting method (AUSM) numerical scheme is used to assist with calculation and analysis, and the monotonic upwind scheme for conservation laws (MUSCLs) technique with second-order precision is adopted in combination with the Van Leer slope limiter to improve precision. Relevant data sourced from prior literature are used to validate the suggested model, the results of which reveal an excellent statistical consistency. Further, the influences of various parameters in a field application, including backpressure, density, and mass flow, are analyzed. Over the course of later-stage drilling, a combination of wellhead backpressure and displacement is recommended to exercise control.
