Predicting Homophily and Social Network Connectivity From Dyadic Behavioral Similarity Trajectory Clusters

The similarity between pairs of people is often measured on relatively static traits and at a given point in time. Moving beyond this approach, a burgeoning line of research is investigating temporal dyadic similarity on traits and behaviors, such as health activities. Our study contributes to this line of inquiry by using fine-grained longitudinal data obtained from sensors, mobile devices, and surveys to examine whether we can observe distinct types of dyadic similarity trajectories based on physical activity, and if so, what dyad-level properties predict membership in each trajectory class. Treating daily differences in the steps for dyads as time series, we use k-shape clustering to identify classes of similarity trajectories and logistic regression to examine the link between trajectory class and key dyad-level factors. We identify 21 dyadic trajectory clusters and find that trajectory membership predicts dyadic connectivity in the communication network, as well as racial and religious—but not gender-based—similarity. We conclude by noting how research on dyadic similarity trajectories can be further integrated with ongoing work in social network analysis.

The research aim was to investigate associations between objectively-assessed built environment attributes and metabolic risk in adolescents of Pacific Islands ethnicity, and to consider the possible mediating effect of physical activity and sedentary time. Youth (n = 204) undertook a suite of physical assessments including body composition, blood sampling, and blood pressure measurements, and seven day accelerometry. Objective measures of the neighbourhood built environment were generated around individual addresses. Logistic regression and linear modelling were used to assess associations between environment measures and metabolic health, accounting for physical activity behaviours. Higher pedestrian connectivity was associated with an increase in the chance of having any International Diabetes Federation metabolic risk factors for males only. Pedestrian connectivity was related to fat free mass in males in unadjusted analyses only. This study provides evidence for the importance of pedestrian network connectivity for health in adolescent males. Future research is required to expand the limited evidence in neighbourhood environments and adolescent metabolic health.

The fast developing social network is a double-edged sword. It remains a serious problem to provide users with excellent mobile social network services as well as protecting privacy data. Most popular social applications utilize behavior of users to build connection with people having similar behavior, thus improving user experience. However, many users do not want to share their certain behavioral information to the recommendation system. In this paper, we aim to design a secure friend recommendation system based on the user behavior, called PRUB. The system proposed aims at achieving fine-grained recommendation to friends who share some same characteristics without exposing the actual user behavior. We utilized the anonymous data from a Chinese ISP, which records the user browsing behavior, for 3 months to test our system. The experiment result shows that our system can achieve a remarkable recommendation goal and, at the same time, protect the privacy of the user behavior information.

AbstractMining time series data is of great significance in various areas. To efficiently find representative patterns in these data, this article focuses on the definition of a valid dissimilarity measure and the acceleration of partitioning clustering, a common group of techniques used to discover typical shapes of time series. Dissimilarity measure is a crucial component in clustering. It is required, by some particular applications, to be invariant to specific transformations. The rationale for using the angle between two time series to define a dissimilarity is analyzed. Moreover, our proposed measure satisfies the triangle inequality with specific restrictions. This property can be employed to accelerate clustering. An integrated algorithm is proposed. The experiments show that angle-based dissimilarity captures the essence of time series patterns that are invariant to amplitude scaling. In addition, the accelerated algorithm outperforms the standard one as redundancies are pruned. Our approach has been applied to discover typical patterns of information diffusion in an online social network. Analyses revealed the formation mechanisms of different patterns.

Resumen: El presente artículo tiene como objetivo analizar los yacimientos de inserción profesional y las condiciones laborales de las tituladas y los titulados en Ciencias de la Actividad Física y el Deporte (CAFyD) a través de un estudio comparativo entre sexos. Para ello, en el año 2013, se administró un cuestionario a un total de 1.000 personas egresadas en CAFyD por las universidades catalanes. Los resultados indican que no existe una discriminación directa en las condiciones de trabajo, para un mismo cargo mujeres y hombres presentan condiciones similares. En cambio, sí que se ha detectado una discriminación indirecta fruto de la carga social y cultural que afecta a las preferencias de las mujeres a la hora de escoger un determinado yacimiento de inserción.Abstract: This paper aims to analyse the sources of employment for university graduates in Physical Activity and Sport Science through a gender-based comparative study. With this objective, in 2013, a questionnaire was administered to total of 1,000 university graduates in Physical Activity and Sport Science from Catalan universities. The results indicate that there is no direct discrimination in working conditions, for a same position women and men share similar conditions. However, an indirect discrimination has been detected as a result of the social and cultural burden that affects the preferences of women when accessing and choosing a particular insertion field.

Objective: Only 16% of people aged >65 years engage in recommended levels of physical activity, putting a vast major­ity at risk for multiple chronic conditions including heart disease. Physical activity is even lower among older adults with fewer economic resources. Research is needed to develop context-specific approaches to pair with physical activity interventions to increase effectiveness. In this pilot study, we examine social ties and physical activity levels of older adults living in a US Depart­ment of Housing and Urban Development subsidized senior housing community to test feasibility of a social network-based approach to physical activity interventions. This study is grounded in Social Contagion Theory and the Convoy Model of Social Relations, which argue health and health-related behaviors are facilitated through network ties.Methods: Data were collected through face-to-face interviews conducted over the course of three months (September- November 2018) with 46 residents living in a low-income senior housing community in southeast Michigan. Residents were asked about physical activity, people they know in the community, and their close social network composition.Results: Residents reported knowing, on average, six other residents and approxi­mately 28% of those in their close networks were also residents. Sociocentric network analysis identified two socially engaged (known by seven or more other residents) physically active residents, whereas ego-centric analysis identified four (60% or more of their network comprised residents).Conclusions: This study demonstrates potential feasibility of a strategic partnership that involves pairing social resources with physical activity interventions in afford­able senior housing. Fine-grained information about dynamic structure of cortical networks is crucial in unpacking brain function. Here,we introduced a novel analytical method to characterize the dynamic interaction between distant brain regions,based on cyclicity analysis, and applied it to data from the Human Connectome Project. Resting-state fMRI time series are aperiodic and, hence, lack a base frequency. Cyclicity analysis, which is time-reparametrization invariant, is effective in recovering dynamic temporal ordering of such time series along a circular trajectory without assuming any time scale. Our analysis detected the propagation of slow cortical waves across thebrain with consistent shifts in lead-lag relationships between specific brain regions. We also observed short bursts of strong temporal ordering that dominated overall lead-lag relationships between pairs of regions in the brain, which were modulated by tasks. Our results suggest the possible role played by slow waves of ordered information between brain regions that underlie emergent cognitive function.
