Character strengths are hypothesized to contribute to human thriving. However, the effects of their use on individuals’ behaviors and attitudes at work, an important domain of modern life, have rarely been studied. In the present study, we examined associations of employees’ use of character strengths at work with productivity, organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), and job satisfaction. Based on the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions, we suggested a multiple mediation model demonstrating how these associations are mediated by positive affect and engagement. Participants ( N = 1,095) completed measures of strengths use, work productivity, OCB, job satisfaction, positive affect, and work engagement. As hypothesized, using strengths at work was associated with productivity, OCB, and job satisfaction, and these associations were mediated by higher positive emotions and engagement. The findings highlight the potential benefits of encouraging employees to use their strengths and point to positive affect and work engagement as mediating these effects.

In spite of the increase attention on the corporate social responsibility (CSR) which is considered to be a responsible social behavior of a firm towards its stakeholders and environment, the underlying explanation mechanism that could describe this relationship has not been exhaustively investigated, especially in the context of Iraq. Thus, this study developed a theoretical model of moderation and mediation to provide deeper insight on the impact of CSR on the work engagement and organizational behavior. This research is focused on employees in Iraq, with primary data acquired using a structured questionnaire answered by 524 respondents. The study was undertaken to highlight employees’ perception of the different aspects of CSR and their effect on job satisfaction, work engagement, and organizational citizenship behavior. Data analysis was carried out using structural equation modeling, a combination of multiple regression and factor analysis. The study findings explicitly demonstrate that the dimensions of Corporate Social Responsibility have a very strong positive effect on Organizational Citizenship Behavior and Work Engagement. In addition, work engagement was found to have direct relationship with organizational citizenship behavior and job satisfaction, while job satisfaction has a direct relationship with organizational citizenship behavior, and mediating/moderating effect on the relationship work engagement and organizational citizenship behavior. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications of our findings were discussed in the study.

Various mostly cross-sectional studies have established that job satisfaction is related to organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). A major goal of the present study was to show that job ambivalence (i.e., the coexistence of positive and negative job evaluations) moderates the job satisfaction-OCB relationship. To this end, job satisfaction, job ambivalence, frequency of positive and negative emotions at work, dispositional positive and negative affectivity, and OCB were gathered from employees at time 1. About 2 months later, OCB was assessed by both peer-ratings and self-ratings. As predicted, the relationship between job satisfaction and both peer-rated and self-rated OCB was stronger the lower the experienced job ambivalence. Further findings showed that job satisfaction mediated the relationship between positive emotions and OCB, and that this indirect effect of positive emotions was conditional on low job ambivalence. Negative emotions, though negatively related to OCB, did not contribute to predicting OCB beyond positive emotions.
