Objective: To understand the process of building culturally competent compassion in nurses who care for vulnerable populations. Method: This is a qualitative study of a “single case study” type, developed with 18 nurses who worked in an emergency care unit in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, between October 2020 and January 2021. Data collection was performed through individual online or one-to-one interviews, following a semi-structured script. Data were treated following thematic content analysis, proposed by Bardin. All ethical precepts were taken into account. Results: After data analysis, the following categories were created: a) Looking within: the recognition of cultural identity; b) Paths to be taken: from the gap to cultural knowledge; c) Attentive listening as essential nursing care; d) Culturally competent compassion as an infinite opportunity for growth. Final considerations: Culturally competent compassion is a subjective, complex, and essential construct in holistic nursing care. When implemented successfully, we gain a significant improvement in the quality of healthcare provided to patients and their families as well as a decrease in social inequality, and the protection of human rights.

Diabetic foot is such a life threatening condition for people with Diabetes Mellitus which it can be result in hemodynamic instability and loss of consciousness. In order to improve quality of nursing care in patient with diabetic foot, nurses should apply a nursing model approach. Levine conservation theoretical model is one of comprehensive model theory that can be applied in patients with critical diabetic foot in Emergency Department (ED). This case study describes a nursing care using Levine's Conservation Model to care for a patient with diabetic foot.  This study was a case study with a single case design. Data were collected using physical assessment, written communications with the patient, interviews patient family members, and observing the patient during intensive care in the ED of Lawang General Hospital on December 21th, 2015. Levine's Conservation Model used as the nursing guideline successfully identified patient issues including ineffective breathing pattern as a major priority of energy conservation problem and damage tissue integrity as a problem of structural conservation. Both of conservation problem were caused by patient's personal integrity conservation maladaptive that caused by ineffective therapeutic regimen management. Levine’s conservation model is useful to investigate nursing problem and applicable to solve the emergency condition of damage tissue integrity in patients with diabetic foot. Index Terms— diabetic foot, nursing care, levine’s conservation model.

ABSTRACT The Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Amusia (MBEA) is a battery of tests that assesses six music processing components: scale, contour, interval, rhythm, metric, and music memory. The present study sought to verify the psychometric characteristics of the MBEA in a sample of 150 adolescents aged 14-18 years in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and to develop specific norms for this population. We used statistical procedures that explored the dimensional structure of the MBEA and its items, evaluating their adequacy from empirical data, verifying their reliability, and providing evidence of validity. The results for the difficult levels for each test indicated a trend toward higher scores, corroborating previous studies. From the analysis of the criterion groups, almost all of the items were considered discriminatory. The global score of the MBEA was shown to be valid and reliable (r K-R20=0.896) for assessing the musical ability of normal teenagers. Based on the analysis of the items, we proposed a short version of the MBEA. Further studies with larger samples and amusic individuals are necessary to provide evidence of the validity of the MBEA in the Brazilian milieu. The present study brings to the Brazilian context a tool for diagnosing deficits in musical skills and will serve as a basis for comparisons with single case studies and studies of populations with specific neuropsychological syndromes.

Purpose: This study explored RN-BS students’ self-care and health-promotion (SCHP) practices in a semester-long holistic nursing course with emphasis on the utility of self-reflection through journal writing. Design: A qualitative single case study blended in practical action research. Method: Fifteen RN-BS students enrolled in the holistic nursing course completed (a) three reflective journal entries (beginning, midterm, and conclusion); (b) two IHWA-short form surveys (beginning and conclusion); and (c) one demographic form (beginning) of the course. Findings: Three reflective journals indicated that students’ understanding of their SCHP practices progressed from novice, to advanced, and finally to competent from the beginning, middle, and at the conclusion of the course. Four findings emerged in relation to reports of their SCHP practices: (a) new awareness of self, (b) application of SCHP practices knowledge, (c) role modeling, and (d) dedication to SCHP practices beyond the semester. Four findings emerged in relation to participation in the reflective journaling about reports of their SCHP practices: (a) self-discovery, (b) retrospective self-evaluation, (c) useful intervention for SCHP, and (d) beneficial learning tool in academic environment. Conclusions: Reflective journaling enhanced students’ SCHP practices and was recognized as useful instructional strategy to improve learning in the classroom.
