Acetylation and in situ polymerization are two typical chemical modifications that are used to improve the dimensional stability of bamboo. In this work, the combination of chemical modification of vinyl acetate (VA) acetylation and methyl methacrylate (MMA) in situ polymerization of bamboo was employed. Performances of the treated bamboo were evaluated in terms of dimensional stability, wettability, thermal stability, chemical structure, and dynamic mechanical properties. Results show that the performances (dimensional stability, thermal stability, and wettability) of bamboo that was prepared via the combined pretreatment of VA and MMA (VA/MMA-B) were better than those of raw bamboo, VA single-treated bamboo (VA-B), and MMA single-treated bamboo (MMA-B). According to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses, VA and MMA were mainly grafted onto the surface of the cell wall or in the bamboo cell lumen. The antiswelling efficiency and contact angle of VA/MMA-B increased to maximum values of 40.71% and 107.1°, respectively. From thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG curves), the highest onset decomposition temperature (277 °C) was observed in VA/MMA-B. From DMA analysis, the storage modulus (E’) of VA/MMA-B increased sharply from 15,057 Pa (untreated bamboo) to 17,909 Pa (single-treated bamboo), and the glass transition temperature was improved from 180 °C (raw bamboo) to 205 °C (single-treated bamboo).

The PMMA/TiO2 nanocomposites were prepared by in situ polymerization, the dissolution, thermal stability and the mechanical property of the nanocomposites were studied. The results indicated that nano-TiO2 may be crosslinking points in the matrix and the thermal stability of the nanocomposites became higher. As the content of nano-TiO2 increased, the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites had great changes.

AbstractMulti-wall carbon nanotubes/poly(butylene terephthalate) nanocomposites have been prepared by in-situ polymerization. Benzimidazolium tetrafluoroborate salts improve the dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the polymer matrix due to the formation of “π-cation” interactions of the imidazolium salt with the surface of the carbon nanotubes. An improved dispersion of the nanotubes in butanediol was also observed using the benzimidazolium salt. The presence of the compatibilization agent gives rise to improved thermo-mechanical properties and electrical conductivity for the nanocomposite. The presence of the nanotubes also consistently increases the thermal stability and enhances the nucleation process on PBT crystallization.

The acidified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs-COOH) was obtained by nitric acid treatment on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs).The PI/MWNTs-COOH composite films were synthesized by in situ polymerization. The thermal stability, resistance and mechanical properties of PI/MWNTs-COOH composite were evaluated. The results showed that: the composites maintained a good thermal stability with the addition of the MWNTs-COOH; the resistance of the composite film dropped at first, and rose up later. While the tensile strength increased at first and then decreased. In conclusion, the PI/MWNTs-COOH composite films exhibited better thermal, antistatic and mechanical properties compared with neat PI.

A series of waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) with crosslinked siloxane were obtained through introducing 3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyldimethoxymethylsilane (APTS) into WPU by in situ polymerization. The properties of WPU modified by APTS were studied through a variety of experimental methods. The water contact angle of the WPU coating surface increased from 64° to 86°, and the water resistance reduced to 3.90% when 3 wt% APTS was added, which improved the coating surface hydrophobicity. Firstly, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and 1H-NMR spectra demonstrated the successful incorporation of APTS to polyurethanes and completed the hydrolytic condensation reaction-generated Si–O–Si crosslinking structure. Furthermore, the surface energy of the membrane was reduced when the crosslinking structure migrated and enriched on the surface of film. Besides, the crosslinking structure was abundant, and the distribution of siloxane in WPU was more uniform.
