Investigation of nonlinear landing gear behavior and dynamic responses on high performance aircraft

The dynamic responses simulation of aircraft as rigid body considering heave, pitch, and roll motions, coupled onto a tricycle landing gear arrangement is presented. Equation of motion for each landing gear consists of un-sprung mass vertical and longitudinal motions considering strut nonlinear stiffness and damping combined with strut bending flexibility. Initially, the nonlinear dynamic response model is subjected to an input of riding over staggered bump and the responses are compared with linear landing gear model. It is observed that aircraft dynamics and important landing gear events such as vertical, spin-up and spring-back are truly represented with nonlinear stiffness and damping model considering strut bending flexibility. Later, landing response analysis is performed, with the input from nonlinear flight mechanics model for several vertical descent rate cases. The aircraft and landing gear dynamic responses such as displacement, velocity, acceleration, and reaction forces are obtained. The vertical and longitudinal drag forces from the nonlinear dynamic response model is compared with “Book-case method” outlined in landing gear design technical specifications. From the reaction force ratio calculation, it is shown that for lower vertical descent rate case the predicted loads are lesser using nonlinear dynamic response model. The same model for higher vertical descent rate cases predicts higher ratios on vertical reaction for main landing gear and longitudinal reaction for nose landing gear, respectively. The scope for increase in fatigue life for low vertical descent rate landing covering major design spectrum and the concern for static strength and structural integrity consideration for higher vertical descent rate cases are discussed in the context of event monitoring on aircraft in services.

Dynamic characteristics of the asymmetric rotor system supported in axial-grooved gas-lubricated bearings are studied. In order to solve nonlinear dynamic response of rotor system effectively, a hybrid numerical model is established by coupling the motion equation of rotor with the rational function model of the gas film forces. The rational function model of the gas film forces of gas-lubricated bearing is established based on vector fitting theory. By using the hybrid numerical model, the repeated calculations of the unsteady Reynolds equation and gas film forces are avoided; the continuous rotor trajectory and the dynamic gas film forces can be calculated simultaneously; and for the rotor system supported in the same bearings, the computing cost can be saved effectively. The nonlinear dynamic responses of asymmetric rotor system supported in axial-grooved gas-lubricated bearings are investigated by trajectory diagrams, frequency spectrum, Poincaré maps, and time series. The bifurcations are analyzed by the bifurcation diagrams with different rotating speeds and mass eccentricities. The dynamic behaviors of the asymmetric rotor system appear complex nonlinear dynamic phenomenon and specific bifurcation characteristics.

In this paper, the nonlinear dynamic response and buckling of damaged composite pipes under radial impact is investigated. A model involving initial geometric deformation, delamination and sub-layer matrix damage is set up for theoretical analysis. Based on the first order shear deformation theory, the nonlinear dynamic equations of the composite pipe considering transverse shear deformation and initial geometric imperfections are obtained by Hamilton’s theory and solved by a semi-analytical finite difference method. The effects of damage on the dynamic response and buckling of composite pipes are discussed.

This study follows an analytical approach to investigate the nonlinear dynamic response and vibration of eccentrically stiffened sandwich functionally graded material (FGM) cylindrical panels with metal–ceramic layers on elastic foundations in thermal environments. It is assumed that the FGM cylindrical panel is reinforced by the eccentrically longitudinal and transversal stiffeners and subjected to mechanical and thermal loads. The material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent and graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution. Based on the Reddy’s third-order shear deformation shell theory, the motion and compatibility equations are derived taking into account geometrical nonlinearity and Pasternak-type elastic foundations. The outstanding feature of this study is that both FGM cylindrical panel and stiffeners are assumed to be deformed in the presence of temperature. Explicit relation of deflection–time curves and frequencies of FGM cylindrical panel are determined by applying stress function, Galerkin method and fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The influences of material and geometrical parameters, elastic foundations and stiffeners on the nonlinear dynamic and vibration of the sandwich FGM panels are discussed in detail. The obtained results are validated by comparing with other results in the literature.
