Empathy and cultural competence in clinical nurses: A structural equation modelling approach

Background: Forgiveness has the potential to resolve painful feelings arising from nurse–patient conflicts. It would be useful to evaluate direct and indirect important factors which are related to forgiveness in order to design interventions that try to facilitate forgiveness. Aim/objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intermediating role of empathy in the cultural competence–forgiveness association among nurses using structural equation modeling. Research design: The research applied a cross-sectional correlational design. Participants and research context: The study included 380 nurses eight hospitals in southern Iran. Ethical considerations: The Ethics and Research Committee of Birjand University of Medical Sciences approved the study protocol. The voluntary nature of participation was explained consent was obtained from participants, and anonymity was guaranteed. Findings: Most of the participants were married and female and fell in the 20- to 30-year-old category. Most of them (89.5%) had a working experience of 1–10 years. The proposed model showed that nurses’ empathy intermediated the association between nurses’ cultural competence and forgiveness which has fitted the data acceptably (root mean square error approximation = 0.070; comparative fit index = 0.993; goodness-of-fit index = 0.983; and χ2/df = 2.85). Conclusion: Empathy skills and cultural competence training were essential for interventions aimed at increasing the tendency to forgive patients. In such interventions, planners should aim at increasing nurses’ cultural competence in order to enhance their empathy toward patients, which can, in turn, lead to a greater wish to forgive patients.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui model pengukuran tingkat kepercayaan pelanggan terhadap situs e-commerce. Langkah awal yang dilakukan yaitu identifikasi faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kepercayaan pelanggan melalui studi literatur dan studi empirik untuk menentukan model analisis terhadap kepuasan pelanggan. Faktor yang mempengaruhi kepercayaan pelanggan untuk bertransaksi secara online yaitu pengetahuan konsumen terhadap e-commerce, reputasi penjual, resiko dalam transaksi, kemudahan penggunaan e-commerce, jaminan sistem, sikap/perilaku terhadap sistem dan sistem keamanan. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah masyarakat Provinsi Bali menggunakan metode purposive sampling dan snowball sampling dengan kriteria responden pernah berkunjung dan melakukan transaksi di e-commerce yang ada di Indonesia lebih dari 3 kali. Instrumen penelitian berupa kuesioner dengan data interval berskala 5 Likert. Instrumen terlebih dahulu diuji validitas isi dengan metode Robert Gregory, validitas empiris menggunakan rumus product moment, reliabilitas instrument menggunakan Cronbach’s Alpha, dan menghasilkan 59 pernyataan yang dapat digunakan untuk pengambilan data. Jumlah responden yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah sebanyak 126 responden. Teknik analisis data, pengujian hipotesis dan pengujian model menggunakan metode Structural Equation Modeling dengan bantuan aplikasi SPSS AMOS 21. Hasil penelitian ini melalui pengujian hipotesis menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan tentang situs e-commerce dan perlindungan keamanan berpengaruh negatif dan tidak signifikan terhadap kepercayaan pelanggan. Resiko, kemudahan e-commerce, jaminan sistem dan sistem keamanan bukan menjadi sesuatu yang penting untuk dipertimbangkan dalam meningkatkan kepercayaan pelanggan karena pengaruhnya tidak signifikan. Reputasi yang dirasakan dan sikap merupakan hal yang perlu diperhatikan dan paling berpengaruh terhadap kepercayaan pelanggan pelanggan. Hasil penelitian ini kemudian diuji menggunakan goodness of fit index dan menghasilkan bahwa model penelitian tersebut dapat diterima dan dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan keinginan pelanggan untuk bertransaksi online

Enhancing the index of crisis resilience is one of the key goals in medical environments. Various parameters can affect crisis resilience. The current study was designed to analyze crisis resilience in medical environments based on the crisis management components. This cross-sectional and descriptive-analytical study was performed in 14 hospitals and medical centers, in 2020. A sample size of 343.5 was determined based on the Cochran's formula. We used a 44-item crisis management questionnaire of Azadian et al. to collect data. The components of this questionnaire included management commitment, error learning, culture learning, awareness, preparedness, flexibility, and transparency. The data was analyzed based on the structural equation modeling approach using IBM SPSS AMOS v. 23.0. The participants’ age and work experience mean were 37.78±8.14 and 8.22±4.47 years. The index of crisis resilience was equal to 2.96±0.87. The results showed that all components of crisis management had a significant relationship with this index (p <0.05). The highest and lowest impact on the resilience index were related to preparedness (E=0.88) and transparency (E=0.60). The goodness of fit indices of this model including RMSEA, CFI, NFI, and NNFI (TLI) was 2.86, 0.071, 0.965, 0.972, and 0.978. The index of crisis resilience in the medical environments was at a moderate level. Furthermore, the structural equation modeling findings indicated that the impact of each component of crisis management should be considered in prioritizing measures to increase the level of resilience.

Abstract Background The happiness of older adults living alone warrants attention because they are more vulnerable to unhappiness than those living with families. The present study aimed to construct and test a structural equation model to elucidate the causal relationship among participation in social activities, satisfaction with the neighborhood environment, subjective health status, and happiness in older adults living alone in South Korea. Methods Secondary data of 2,768 older adults (605 males and 2,163 females) living on their own were extracted from the 2017 Korean Community Health Survey and used in this cross-sectional study. Data were collected via self-reported questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 and AMOS version 20.0. Results The hypothetical model exhibited a good fit: χ2 = 342.06 (df = 58, p < .001), goodness-of-fit index = .98, adjected goodness-of-fit index = .97, root mean square error of approximation = .04, and nonstandard fit index = .92. Participation in social activities had a significant effect on participants’ subjective health status (path coefficient = .45, p = .001) and happiness (path coefficient = .20, p = .003). Conclusions Interventions to improve the health and happiness of older adults living alone should aim to enhance their social and physical environmental dimensions based on the participants' various social activities and their neighborhoods' characteristics.

Employees are the most valuable assets of an organization; therefore, it is very important to understand their behavior. In this regard, the present study was carried out in order to examine the effect of organizational climate on job involvement among nurses working in the teaching hospitals of Qazvin Province, Iran. The present descriptive analytical study was done in 2017. To randomly select a specific proportion of nurses from each of Qazvin teaching hospitals, stratified sampling was used. In total, 340 nurses were selected. Data were collected using 3 questionnaires: Halpin and Kraft Organizational Climate Questionnaire, Job Involvement Questionnaire (Kanungo), and Allen and Myer Organizational Commitment Questionnaire. For data analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were used applying AMOS-24 software. The results of path analysis showed the effect of organizational climate on the nurses’ job involvement. Moreover, organizational climate influenced organizational commitment through the mediation of job involvement. According to values obtained for degree of freedom based on chi-square, goodness-of-fit index, root mean square error of approximation, and comparative fit index were in the defined range; therefore, the validity of the conceptual model was approved. Based on the results of the present study, managers of health organizations can achieve their goals by understanding the organizational climate of the hospitals and its effect on the employees’ job involvement and discovering strategies needed for organizational commitment improvement.

Perkembangan fashion yang cepat dan meningkatnya kebutuhan setiap individu menciptakan peluang bagi para produsen. Mereka berlomba-lomba untuk dapat memenuhi kebutuhan setiap konsumennya. Sepatu menjadi salah satu produk yang banyak beredar di pasaran karena dapat dibuat dengan model dan warna yang bermacam-macam, selain itu kegunaanya pun bermacam-macam. Penelitian ini dibuat untuk mengetahui seberapa besar pengaruh kerentanan normatif, nilai kesadaran, dan integritas, berpengaruh terhadap sikap dan minat beli produk bajakan pada mahasiswa Fakultas Ekonomi Universitas Islam Indonesia di Yogyakarta.  Penelitian ini melibatkan 200 responden dengan teknik accidental sampling dan angket sebagai alat untuk mengumpulkan data. Hasil penelitian dianalisis dengan metode kualitatif yang meliputi uji goodness of fit index, analisis Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), dan pengujian hipotesis. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa ada pengaruh negatif dan signifikan antara kerentanan normatif dan integritas terhadap sikap pada pembelian produk bajakan. Lebih lanjut, hasil analisis Regresi Linier menunjukkan bahwa ada pengaruh positif dan signifikan antara kesadaran nilai terhadap sikap pada pembelian produk bajakan, serta pengaruh positif antara sikap pembelian produk bajakan terhadapa minat beli konsumen. Kata kunci:    kerentanan normatif, nilai kesadaran, integritas, sikap pembelian produk bajakan, minat beli.

Abstract BackgroundThe aim of the present study was to determine the factors affecting the abuse of the elderly by family caregivers among the elderly with hemodialysis (HD) using structural equation modeling.MethodThe study is descriptive-cross sectional, which is conducted in 2018 in Iran. The sample size was 367 in both groups (the elderly and their family caregivers). Data collection was done using an individual-social information questionnaire for the older adults under hemodialysis and their family caregivers, the questionnaire of elder abuse by family caregivers to the older people under hemodialysis, Zarit Burden Interview and the scale of instrumental activities of Daily Living (IADL). Data were analyzed by the SEM method. The Fitness of proposed pattern was measured using the following indexes: Chi-squared degree of freedom ratio (CMIN/DF), Parsimonious Normed Fit Index (PNFI), Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Parsimonious Comparative Fit Index (PCFI), Incremental fit index (IFI), Goodness of Fit Index (GFI) and Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA). The significant level in this study was considered p <0.05.ResultsThe results of the present study showed that more than 70% of the elderly suffer from elder abuse by family caregivers on average. The highest median elder abuse was related to emotional misbehavior (21.46±6.09) and financial misbehavior (19.07±5.33), respectively. 63.2% of caregivers have experienced moderate care burden. 81.4% of women and 80.5% of older men needed help with daily activities. The results showed that the caregivers’ level of education and care burden with standard beta coefficient of -0.251 and 0.200 and the level of elderly’s education and IADL with the best beta coefficient of -0.299 and -0.234, had the highest regression effect on elder abuse respectively. According to the results, the model-fit indices of the hypothesized model was meet the criteria, with the PNFI= 0.746, PCFI= 0.796, IFI= 0.963, GFI=0.970, CFI=0.967, and RMSEA= 0.075. The outcome was suitable for the recommended level, so the hypothetical model appeared to fit the data.ConclusionProviding psychological interventions for family caregivers can reduce the burden when the elderly suffers from other chronic illnesses.

Abstract Objectives This present study was aimed to examine the associations between childhood socioeconomic status (CSES) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among mid-late Chinese and disentangle the pathways using structural equation modelling (SEM). Methods Using cross-sectional data from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), this study included 19767 participants aged 45 and over. SEM models were constructed to decompose the intricate relationships between CSES, childhood health history (CHH), adulthood socioeconomic status (ASES), health-related behaviors (HRB) and T2DM. Results The results showed that T2DM was significantly associated with CSES (sβ = -0.239; P = 0.001), CHH (sβ = -0.016; P = 0.005) and ASES (sβ = -0.180; P = 0.002) directly, While the indirect effect of CSES on T2DM was sβ = -0.111; P = 0.001with an acceptable goodness-of-fit. The model presented an acceptable goodness of fit: RMSA0.082, CFI 0.803, GFI 0.938, AGFI 0.904, and SRMR 0.060. Conclusions CSES had direct and indirect effects on later incidence of T2DM, which was mediated by ASES and CHH, supporting the life course theory, indicating that optimal interventions should be conducted in the early stages of life to narrow the socioeconomic and obtain maximal health benefits.

Background: Organizational culture is the most essential tool of an organization to increase the resilience of personnel in a healthcare system. Promoting organizational culture is an effective factor in increasing job satisfaction and reducing psychological burden, and burnout in nurses. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the influence of organizational culture on resilience by mediatory effects of occupational stress, job satisfaction, and burnout in nurses using structural equation modeling. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 712 nurses working in seven hospitals in Tehran during the 2018 - 2019. The participants were selected by thee stratified random sampling method with proportional allocation. In detail, after determining the number of samples of each hospital, sampling was performed using a random number sequence. The data gathering was performed by using questionnaires. Data were analyzed by the SPSS, version 23.0, and LISREL, version 8.8. Results: We found a significant positive correlation between organizational culture and job satisfaction (r = 0.29) and resilience (r = 0.21) (P < 0.05). There was a significant negative correlation between organizational culture and occupational stress (r = -0.22), and burnout (r= -0.14) (P < 0.05). The goodness of fit index (GFI) for organizational culture, occupational stress, job satisfaction, burnout, and resilience was 0.97, 0.97, 0.98, 0.96, and 0.95, respectively. RMSEA index for organizational culture, job satisfaction, burnout, and resilience was 0.069, 0.093, 0.057, and 0.050, respectively, which showed that the model is appropriately fit. Conclusions: The findings of the present study indicated that promoting organizational culture and reducing occupational stress and burnout can improve job satisfaction and mental health in nurses.

The e-commerce market of Pakistan has phenomenally fostered in recent years as a result of cyberspace expansion and launching of various national and international vendors. While country’s e-commerce scenario has significantly reshaped, customers are still reluctant to adopt e-payment methods and cash on delivery (COD) prevails as the method of payments for online shopping. This study was conducted to empirically investigate major factors which influence Pakistani customers to opt for COD while shopping online. A framework was proposed based on seven constructs and the data were collected using 5-point Likert-type scale. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) v. 22 and Amos v. 23 were used for statistical analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM). Cronbach’s alpha values above .85 were found suggesting good internal consistency. The goodness-of-fit index and adjusted goodness-of-fit index values were observed to be 0.933 and 0.866, respectively. In SEM analysis, perceived security against online scams and perceived control over the buying process were observed to be the key role players instigating Pakistani customers to use COD. Interestingly, perceived trust and perceived satisfaction did not show significant impact. Moreover, the moderator of ease of use positively mediated the influence of perceived security on the use of COD. This study presents imperative implications for online businesses as well as government agencies. The investigation provides an insight into purchase behaviors of Pakistani e-customers and has paramount importance for e-commerce retailers and marketing startups in evolving e-commerce scenario of the country.
