A holistic theory of career development is presented that places an emphasis on extrinsic and intrinsic characteristics. The four extrinsic characteristics — individual professional career development, economic/philosophical influences, industry/technology development and environmental philosophy — are matched to the traditional “big four” theories. By examining the confluence of the four axes presented in the model, counsellors can work with clients to answer important career issues.

Starościak Wojciech, Dębska Urszula, Guła-Kubiszewska Halina, Designing professional career by students – physical education teachers. „Kultura – Społeczeństwo – Edukacja” nr 2(14) 2018, Poznań 2018, pp. 183–203, Adam Mickiewicz University Press. ISSN 2300-0422. DOI 10.14746/kse.2018.14.14. The study identified physical education students’ opinions about and vision of personal career. It was conducted with a questionnaire designed by A. Cybal-Michalska for planning career prospects and career development in modern society by academic youth. Results demonstrate the professional expectations of the sample to be largely met. Students of the University School of Physical Education in Wroclaw are oriented towards individualistic and collectivistic values to a similar extent. Both groups are moderately satisfied with study choices and have a realistic outlook on the difficulties in finding a job consistent withtheir education. They assess the prospect of a satisfactory career on an equally moderate level, although individualist-oriented students perceive significantly fewer ways of achieving professional success. Collectivistic students emphasize values characteristic of a safe future and working with people and for people. Individualistic students are geared towards innovative and creative activities. Students perceive their careers in the psychological dimension, and select lifestyle and professionalism as the lead guides in career development.

PurposeDrawing on theories pertaining to knowledge sharing, ageing at work and human resource practices for ageing workers, this article explores knowledge sharing challenges arising from the interaction between an increasingly ageing workforce and younger employees.Design/methodology/approachContextually, the authors focus on China, where the pace of demographic transformations offers a unique opportunity to investigate knowledge sharing practices in their socio-economic context. Empirically, the authors analyse knowledge sharing behaviours and practices of retail banking professionals in a Chinese big four bank.FindingsThe encouragement of knowledge sharing between younger and older workers should be incorporated into organisations' human resource strategies. The availability of development, maintenance, utilisation and accommodative human resource practices signals to older workers that they are valuable and are worth investing in.Originality/valueThe authors’ contribution to theory and practice is twofold: starting with the identification of perceived knowledge sharing challenges, the authors’ analysis offers important contextually grounded insights into what types of managerial practices are relevant in eliciting successful knowledge sharing within organisations faced with an ageing workforce.

No industry seems to change as much or as quickly as the information technology (IT) marketplace. The skills necessary to be a successful professional in this industry change as the technology changes and as one advances through a career. The results of prior research are used to develop a field study of IT professionals’ skill sets throughout their careers. Our findings suggest that IT professionals need to have different technical skills as their careers progress, and that; in fact, they do have different technical skills at different stages in their careers.
