Discussions about intersubjectivity can be traced back to philosophical discussions of the 19th century. In recent years, disciplines such as neuroscience, social cognition, and phenomenology have discussed “empathy” in terms of the ability for human connection. More recently, researchers are discussing the definition of empathy, especially the relationship between empathy and the motivation to seek another’s well-being. In this discussion, psychological theories conceived empathy as a factor of prosocial behavior. Other researchers such as Bloom consider empathy as an unfit moral guide, while yet others attempt to remove the caring condition from the equation of empathy. In this article, we aim to contribute to the discussion on empathy discussions by analyzing lynching, a form of collective violence sometimes seen in the South American context. We suggest that lynching, as well as other phenomena of collective violence, presents specific challenges for the conceptualization of empathy, and that those challenges could be tackled from the perspective of “4E cognition.”

The world is undergoing an accelerated urbanization process marked by social and environmental imbalances. In this context, urban and periurban agriculture (UPA) emerges as an alternative to sustainable urbanization mainly due to its contribution to food security, reduction of environmental impact, revitalization of urban areas, integration of households and physical and psychological well-being increasing. The purpose of this paper is to understand how academic literature deals with urban and periurban agriculture. For that, a scoping / mapping literature review was carried out and its results were presented after identification of relevant scientific studies on UPA, its main aspects, ways in which the term has been defined; and discussion about themes from the selected articles. After this review, the conclusions are: the scientific production on the subject is undergoing high growth rates in recent years; the relationship between UPA and urban dynamics is more important for the definition of UPA than the location of agriculture; and that the aspects that authors found most interesting are: concept and panorama, urban planning and governance, quantitative potential, environment, risk of contamination and techniques and productivity.

Adolescence and emerging adulthood are both stages in which romantic relationships play a key role in development and can be a source of both well-being and negative outcomes. However, the limited number of studies prior to adulthood, along with the multiplicity of variables involved in the romantic context and the considerable ambiguity surrounding the construct of well-being, make it difficult to reach conclusions about the relationship between the two phenomena. This systematic review synthesizes the results produced into this topic over the last three decades. A total of 112 studies were included, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) guidelines. On the one hand, these works revealed the terminological heterogeneity in research on well-being and the way the absence of symptoms of illness are commonly used to measure it, while on the other hand, they also showed that romantic relationships can be an important source of well-being for both adolescents and emerging adults. The findings underline the importance of providing a better definition of well-being, as well as to attribute greater value to the significance of romantic relationships. Devoting greater empirical, educational, and community efforts to romantic development in the stages leading up to adulthood are considered necessary actions in promoting the well-being of young people.

Church vis it vis culture among the republican Afrikaner of the 19th century - an historical investigation. In this study attention is given to the question of the correlation between and/or position of the church vis a vis culture among the republican Afrikaner of the 19th century. Initially attention is given to  a workohle definition of church and culture and then, in the light of Calvinist theology, the relationship is discussed. Eventually the stated problem is discussed and the conclusion formulated that the culture of the Afrikaner was strongly influenced and directed by its theological viewpoints. A few conclusions are drawn.

Subjective well-being (SWB) is positively related to helping others, but so far research has not explored the association of individual aspects of well-being with prosocial behavior across the world. We used a representative sample (N = 1,433,078) from the Gallup World Poll (GWP) to explore the relationship between each aspect of well-being and prosocial behavior. We explored these associations between and within 161 countries. We found that different aspects of SWB are not equally associated with prosocial behavior: While life satisfaction and positive affect consistently predicted being more prosocial, negative affect did not consistently predict being less prosocial. Our findings underline the importance of studying the effects of the different components of SWB separately, indicating that, across the globe, it is satisfaction and positive emotions—not the lack of negative emotions—that are associated with being prosocial.

In this work, we define gratitude, paying attention to interpersonal gratitude and its relationship with dispositional debt. We examined the disposition to feel indebted through analysis of convergence and divergence, exploratory and confirmatory analysis of the most used measurement instrument. The Revised Indebtedness Scale depicted a four factor solution interrelated with a high consistency of content, which allows their labeling and describing. To do this, two samples of university students were selected; one of the sample sizes had 229 Spanish participants and the other 200 participants. Subsequently, a mediation model was tested in which the “Self-sufficiency and discomfort in receiving help” factor mediates the relationship between interpersonal gratitude and the “Positive relations with others” dimension of the Wellbeing scale. The results are discussed in relation to the need for conceptual definition of the constructs in Positive Psychology.

The article analyzes the illustrative work of Russian writers of the first quarter of the 19th century. Special attention is paid to the definition of the term "writer-artist", as well as to techniques for creating the image of a writer-Illustrator in a work of fiction. In conclusion, we draw a conclusion about the relationship between literature and painting (on the example of interpreting the creativity of word masters who create illustrations for their works), as well as about the unique communicative nature of the image of the writer-artist.

This article discusses the issue of the relationship between euphemisms and regional phenomena. The author dwells on the definition of euphemisms and the indication of their main features, emphasizing that the main aspect in understanding euphemisms is replacing a rude or undesirable word with a softer and more appropriate one. According to the author, understanding euphemisms that are found in the speech of residents of a certain geographical area is very important for heads of administrations at various levels, employees of departments, working with the local residents, i.e. for managers who ensure the well-being of city dwellers. The notion of euphemisms is closely related to culture and social attitudes that are developed in society. It is the link between euphemisms and culture, certain stereotypes, traditions of society, systems of values, etc. that makes the existence of regional euphemisms possible. In this study, a hypothesis is put forward about the presence of euphemistic substitutions, characteristic of a certain region. As part of the research, an attempt was made to identify euphemisms characteristic of the Tula region (Russia). Examples of direct discussion of Russian-language publications made in the “Overheard in Tula” community of the VKontakte social network serve as the empirical material for the study. As a result of the analysis, it was proved that in most cases, participants in communication use euphemisms when discussing the shortcomings and problems of their region. Understanding such use of euphemisms can help city managers in their work. The research reveals which regional events most often induce the residents of the Tula region to use euphemistic substitutions. Based on the comparison of selected discourse samples and data from lexicographic sources, it is determined whether the used substitutions can be considered euphemisms. The authors come to the conclusion that it is possible to speak about the existence of the very phenomenon of regional euphemisms and that its further study is much needed as it can improve the efficiency of city managers.

Bernd Henningsen: Die Politik des Einzelnen. Studien zur Genese der Skandinavischen Ziviltheologie. Ludvig Holberg. Søren Kierkegaard. N. F. S. Grundtvig. Studien zur Theologie und Geistesgeschichte des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts Bd. 26. Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, Göttingen 1977. Reviewed by Viggo Mortensen. The author of this doctorate, defended in Munich, sets out to track down the Danish, and thereby in his opinion, the Scandinavian national character. The problem for him as a politologist is why the great political upheavals, not to mention revolutions are absent from Scandinavian history. He looks for the spiritual background to this in the way the 19th century understood politics. That is, he wishes to analyse the relationship between the political events and the philosophical-historical tradition. What are the causes of this ‘immunity*, which in Scandinavia has prevented ideologies from becoming mass phenomena? Henningsen has found important contributions to an understanding of this problem in Holberg, Kierkegaard and Grundtvig. He characterises this political understanding with a concept from antiquity - ‘civil theology* - and with the English concept of ‘common sense’. The framework for his conception is constructed of various aspects of Danish social history and historical consciousness from the Danish Law (1683) to the ’Liberal Kulturkamp’ of the 1930’s, and Holberg is regarded as the father of Danish civil theology. Since it is the doctorate’s argument that continuity is a characteristic feature of Scandinavian civil theology, Kierkegaard is also included, his anti-clerical campaign being seen as a result of his awareness of his social-critical responsibility. But it is not really made clear what Kierkegaard’s contribution to Danish civil theology is, apart from his criticism of Hegel and his demand for an agreement between theory and practice.Grundtvig’s inclusion on the other hand is a matter of course. But he is given less room and treated more superficially than both Holberg and Kierkegaard. The writer quite rightly sees that Grundtvig is the clearest representative of the specifically Scandinavian attitude to the life of the spirit (’Geisteshaltung*). In particular, emphasis is placed on Grundtvig’s ideas of ’folkelighed’ (national spirit) and ’danskhed’ (Danishness). As Henningsen defines ’folkelighed’ as the sum total of a nation’s values, norms and behaviour, this concept becomes a definition of what is denoted by the key concept, civil theology - and thus becomes the key to our resistance to ideology. This point of view could and should have been developed and supported with more evidence. The main impression the book leaves is that Holberg is treated congenially, Kierkegaard with uncritical admiration, and Grundtvig with unacceptable brevity. However, the writer demonstrates wide reading and a close acquaintance with Danish cultural life. He believes that scholars who do not speak Danish must set about learning it, if they wish to be taken seriously as, for example, Kierkegaard scholars. This reviewer considers that the book reveals contexts and suggests lines of continuity that will provoke much thought.

The aim of this exploratory study was to examine fourth to eighth graders’ conceptualizations of kindness at school (i.e., their definition of kindness, an example of an act of kindness they have done, who they see as the most salient adult agent of kindness, and which location they deem that kindness happens most). To date, kindness research has focused predominantly on assessing the effects of being kind on student well-being and little is known about how students understand kindness and are kind in school. Across definitions and examples of kindness, the themes of helping others, showing respect, and encouraging others were prevalent. Teachers and principals were identified as the main adult agents of kindness; the classroom and outside/playground were identified as the two main kindness locations. Understanding how students conceptualize kindness within the school context holds implications for educators seeking to foster prosocial behavior among students.
