User Support Systems: Lessons Learned from Implementing Multiple Interaction Methods During Testing

To master the functions and tasks of a game, players must learn how to play the game. When conceptual learning outcomes are expected, additional skills are required to master those concepts. Methods, such as the Wizard of Oz technique, which require users to interact with a computer support tool, have been used to help improve usability and learnability of products and interfaces; however, little attention has been given to how these approaches may help with effective scaffolding with respect to constructionist game design tools. Students created research experiment games in StudyCrafter. We introduced a multiple-interaction technique of providing feedback via querying the “system” or instructor and found that students typically initiate interactions with support tools to address technical issues and rarely ask for assistance with conceptual support. We suggest that the use of this approach allows designers to better gauge how users interact with support and propose considerations for designing creativity support tools for educational content.

Growing interest in data-driven, decision-support tools across the life sciences and physical sciences has motivated development of web applications, also known as web apps. Web apps can help disseminate research findings and present research outputs in ways that are more accessible and meaningful to the general public--from individuals, to governments, to companies. Specifically, web apps enable exploration of scenario testing and policy analysis (i.e., to answer “what if?”) as well as co-evolution of scientific and public knowledge. However, the majority of researchers developing web apps receive little formal training or technical guidance on how to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of their web-based decision support tools. Take some of us for example. We (Saia and Nelson) are agricultural and environmental engineers with little experience in web app development, but we are interested in creating web apps to support sustainable aquaculture production in the Southeast. We had user (i.e., shellfish growers) interest, a goal in mind (i.e., develop a new forecast product and decision-support tool for shellfish aquaculturalists), and received funding to support this work. Yet, we experienced several unexpected hurdles from the start of our project that ended up being fairly common hiccups to the seasoned web app developers among us (Young, Parham). As a result, we share the following Ten Simple Rules, which highlight take home messages, including lessons learned and practical tips, of our experience as burgeoning web app developers. We hope researchers interested in developing web apps draw insights from our (in)experience as they set out on their decision support tool development journey.

With mental health services shifting to community-based settings, community mental health (CMH) organizations are under increasing pressure to deliver effective services. Despite availability of evidence-based interventions, there is a gap between effective mental health practices and the care that is routinely delivered. Bridging this gap requires availability of easily tailorable implementation support tools to assist providers in implementing evidence-based intervention with quality, thereby increasing the likelihood of achieving the desired client outcomes. This study documents the process and lessons learned from exploring the feasibility of adapting such a technology-based tool, Centervention, as the example innovation, for use in CMH settings. Mixed-methods data on core features, innovation–provider fit, and organizational capacity were collected from 44 CMH providers. Lessons learned included the need to augment delivery through technology with more personal interactions, the importance of customizing and integrating the tool with existing technologies, and the need to incorporate a number of strategies to assist with adoption and use of Centervention-like tools in CMH contexts. This study adds to the current body of literature on the adaptation process for technology-based tools and provides information that can guide additional innovations for CMH settings.

In recent years, many tools have been developed to understand attacks that make use of visualization, but few examples aims to predict real-world consequences. We have developed a visualization tool that aims to improve decision support during attacks. Our tool visualizes propagation of risks from IDS and AV-alert data by relating sensor alerts to Business Process (BP) tasks and machine assets: an important capability gap present in many Security Operation Centres (SOCs) today. In this paper we present a user study in which we evaluate the tool's usability and ability to deliver situational awareness to the analyst. Ten analysts from seven SOCs performed carefully designed tasks related to understanding risks and prioritising recovery decisions. The study was conducted in laboratory conditions, with simulated attacks, and used a mixed-method approach to collect data from questionnaires, eyetracking and voice-recorded interviews. The findings suggest that providing analysts with situational awareness relating to business priorities can help them prioritise response strategies. Finally, we provide an in-depth discussion on the wider questions related to user studies in similar conditions as well as lessons learned from our user study and developing a visualization tool of this type.

User-friendly, evidence-based scientific tools to support sanitation decisions are still limited in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector. This commentary provides lessons learned from the development of two sanitation decision support tools developed in collaboration with stakeholders in Uganda. We engaged with stakeholders in a variety of ways to effectively obtain their input in the development of the decision support tools. Key lessons learned included: tailoring tools to stakeholder decision-making needs; simplifying the tools as much as possible for ease of application and use; creating an enabling environment that allows active stakeholder participation; having a dedicated and responsive team to plan and execute stakeholder engagement activities; involving stakeholders early in the process; having funding sources that are flexible and long-term; and including resources for the acquisition of local data. This reflection provides benchmarks for future research and the development of tools that utilize scientific data and emphasizes the importance of engaging with stakeholders in the development process.

Photogrowth is a creativity support tool for the creation of nonphotorealistic renderings of images. The authors discuss its evolution from a generative art application to an interactive evolutionary art tool and finally into a meta-level interactive art system in which users express their artistic intentions through the design of a fitness function. The authors explore the impact of these changes on the sense of authorship, highlighting the range of imagery that can be produced by the system.

Organization members often complain about insufficient time to reflect collectively as they grapple with constant significant changes. The Learning History methodology can support this collective reflection. Given the scant empirical studies of this action research approach, the present paper fills this gap by giving an overview of this methodology and by presenting a qualitative study that answers the following research question: How does the Learning History methodology contribute to collective reflection among organization members during major organizational change? To answer this question, an empirical research project was led within five healthcare organizations in Canada during their implementation of the Planetree person-centered approach to management, care, and services. The data set includes 150 semi-structured interviews, 20 focus groups and 10 feedback meetings involving organization members representing all hierarchical levels in the five participating institutions. The results highlight the five types of contributions of the Learning History methodology to collective reflection within the five institutions that participated in the study: 1) a process of expression, dialogue, and reflection among organization members; 2) a portrait of the change underway; 3) a support tool for the change process; 4) a vector for mobilizing stakeholders; and 5) a source of organizational learning.  The results also show how organization members’ collective reflection is built through the various stages of the Learning History methodology. By demonstrating that this collective reflection leads to true organizational learning, the findings position the Learning History as a research-action method useful both from a research standpoint and as an organizational development tool. In the conclusion, lessons learned using the LH approach are shared from a researcher’s perspective. This paper should interest researchers and practitioners who seek research methodologies that can offer an infrastructure for collective reflection to support organizational change and learning.

The formability and geometrical accuracy in incremental sheet forming can be increased using a force-controlled support tool. The main problems in using such a kinematic support tool is the positioning of forming and support tools, while maintaining force magnitude and alignment. A new tool for this was developed systematically using a morphological box. It uses a spring controlled rotation of the tool tip to maintain the force. Since the rotation axis is not in line with the tool tip axis and the tool tip can freely rotate around its axis, roll friction conditions can be achieved. The center of gravity of the rotating part of the tool is placed in the rotating axis and the force is therefore independent from the alignment of the tool in space. It has a mechanical stop with locking option in the vertical position and is therefore also fully usable as a forming tool. While the prototype is manually controlled, concepts for a fully automated version have been designed, as well. First tests are in line with results described in literature, showing that direction and magnitude of force have an influence on the formability.
