Vibration control by active integrated control system under bidirectional ground motions

To improve the safety and security of the structures with irregular plan configuration, the new torsionally effective passive control system (ICS) was first proposed by the author, which utilizes a new design configuration to dissipate the unwanted energy from the structures in the lateral and torsional directions. In this research, a new active structural control approach, which is the active form of the ICS (or active integrated control system, AICS), is introduced as an alternative active control system, especially for the buildings with torsional sensitivity. In the design of active system configurations, two actuators driven by the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) are implemented and used to apply the optimum control forces to the ATMDs and AICS. For examining the performance of the proposed system configuration, the final design is applied to the 9-story Benchmark steel structure subjected to bidirectional three historical earthquakes. The obtained results show the overall performance of structural performance by using the AICS is substantially improved as compared to conventional ones (ATMDs) under selected ground accelerations with a 3% to 6% improvement in the lateral directions and by nearly 20% in the torsional direction in terms of the peak and root mean square response reduction.

The future of space satellite technology lies in ultra-large mirrors and radar apertures for significant improvements in imaging and communication bandwidths. The availability of optical-quality membranes drives a parallel effort for structural models that can capture the dominant dynamics of large, ultra-flexible satellite payloads. Unfortunately, the inherent flexibility of membrane mirrors wrecks havoc with the payload's on-orbit stability and maneuverability. One possible means of controlling these undesirable dynamics is by embedding active piezoelectric ceramics near the boundary of the membrane mirror. In doing so, active feedback control can be used to eliminate detrimental vibration, perform static shape control, and evaluate the health of the structure. In the present work, a piezoceramic wafer was attached in a bimorph configuration near the boundary of a tensioned rectangular membrane sample. A finite element model of the system was developed to capture the relevant system dynamics from 0 – 500 Hz. The finite element model was compared to experimental results with fair agreement. Using the validated finite element models, structural control using Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) control techniques were then used to demonstrate effective vibration control. Typical results show that less than 12 V of actuation voltage is required to eliminate detrimental vibration of the membrane samples in less than 15 ms. The functional gains of the active system are also derived and presented. These spatially descriptive control terms dictate favorable regions within the membrane domain to place sensors.

Abstract Fluid-borne noise (FBN) is a major contributor to structure-borne noise (SBN) and air-borne noise (ABN) in hydraulic fluid power systems and could lead to increased fatigue in system components. FBN is caused by the unsteady flow generated by pumps and motors and propagates through the system resulting in SBN and ABN. New hydraulic technologies such as digital switched hydraulic converters also generate unavoidable FBN. This article reports on a novel integrated FBN attenuation approach, which employs a hybrid control system by integrating an active feed forward noise attenuator with passive tuned flexible hoses. The active system which consists of adaptive notch filters using a variable step-size filtered-X Least Mean Squares algorithm is used to control a newly designed high-force high-bandwidth piezoelectric actuator in order to attenuate the dominant narrowband pressure ripples. The passive hose is tuned in the frequency domain and used to cancel the high-frequency pressure ripples. A time-domain hose model considering coupling of longitudinal wall and fluid waves was used to model the flexible hose in the integrated control system. Very good FBN cancellation was achieved by using the integrated control approach in simulation and experiments. It is an effective, cost-efficient and practical solution for FBN attenuation. The problem of high noise levels generated by hydraulically powered machines has risen significantly in awareness within industry and amongst the general public, and this work constitutes an important contribution to the sustainable development of low noise hydraulic fluid power machines.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to test the performance of the control system developed for the helicopter automatic approach and landing on the moving vessel deck, when different values of backlashes are applied to the four control actuators. Design/methodology/approach The system consists of automatic control algorithm based on the linear quadratic regulator and the vessel motion prediction algorithm based on autoregressive method with parameters calculated using Burg’s method. Necessary navigation data is provided by on-board inertial navigation system/Global Positioning System. Calculated control commands are executed by four electromechanical actuators. Performance of the mission, which is based on selected procedure of approach and landing of the helicopter on the moving vessel deck, is analyzed taking into account different values of backlashes applied to the actuators. Findings In this paper, a description of the control system dedicated for automatic approach and landing of the helicopter on the moving vessel deck is shown. Necessary information about helicopter dynamic model, control system and vessel motion model is included. Tests showing influence of actuator backlashes on the mission performance are presented. Practical implications The developed control methodology can be adapted for selected helicopter and used in prospective development of an automatic flight control system (AFCS) or in a simulator. The system can be used to define in which conditions helicopter can perform safe and successful automatic approach and landing on a moving vessel deck. Originality/value In this paper, an integrated control system is presented; influence of the control actuator backlashes on the mission performance is analyzed.

This paper presents a new active structural control design methodology comparing the conventional linear-quadratic-Gaussian synthesis with a loop-transfer-recovery (LQG/LTR) control approach for structures subjected to ground excitations. It results in an open-loop stable controller. Also the closed-loop stability can be guaranteed. More importantly, the value of the controller's gain required for a given degree of LTR is orders of magnitude less than what is required in the conventional LQG/LTR approach. Additionally, for the same value of gain, the proposed controller achieves a much better degree of recovery than the LQG/LTR-based controller. Once this controller is obtained, the problems of control force saturation are either eliminated or at least dampened, and the controller band-width is reduced and consequently the control signal to noise ratio at the input point of the dynamic system is increased. Finally, numerical examples illustrate the above advantages.

Asymmetric structures experience torsional effects when subjected to seismic excitation. The resulting rotation will further aggravate the damage of the structure. A mathematical model is developed to study the translation and rotation response of the structure during seismic excitation. The motion equations of the structures which cover the translation and rotation are obtained by the theoretical derivations and calculations. Through the simulated computation, the translation and rotation response of the structure with the uncontrolled system, the tuned mass damper control system, and active tuned mass damper control system using linear quadratic regulator algorithm are compared to verify the effectiveness of the proposed active control system. In addition, the linear quadratic regulator and fuzzy neural network algorithm are used to the active tuned mass damper control system as a contrast group to study the response of the structure with different active control method. It can be concluded that the structure response has a significant reduction by using active tuned mass damper control system. Furthermore, it can be also found that fuzzy neural network algorithm can replace the linear quadratic regulator algorithm in an active control system. Because fuzzy neural network algorithm can control the process on an uncertain mathematical model, it has more potential in practical applications than the linear quadratic regulator control method.

The design of the spacecraft Attitude Control System (ACS) becomes more complex when the spacecraft has different type of components like, flexible solar panels, antennas, mechanical manipulators and tanks with fuel. The interaction between the fuel slosh motion, the panel’s flexible motion and the satellite rigid motion during translational and/or rotational manoeuvre can change the spacecraft center of mass position damaging the ACS pointing accuracy. This type of problem can be considered as a Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) where some movable or deformable structure interacts with an internal fluid. This paper develops a mathematical model for a rigid-flexible satellite with tank with fuel. The slosh dynamics is modelled using a common pendulum model and it is considered to be unactuated. The control inputs are defined by a transverse body fixed force and a moment about the centre of mass. A comparative investigation designing the satellite ACS by the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) methods is done. One has obtained a significant improvement in the satellite ACS performance and robustness of what has been done previously, since it controls the rigid-flexible satellite and the fuel slosh motion, simultaneously.

<span>This research aims to propose an optimal controller for controlling the speed of the Direct Current (DC) motor. Based on the mathematical equations of DC Motor, the author builds the equations of the state space model and builds the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller to minimize the error between the set speed and the response speed of DC motor. The results of the proposed controller are compared with the traditional controllers as the PID, the feed-forward controller. The simulation results show that the quality of the control system in the case of LQR controller is much higher than the traditional controllers. The response speed always follows the set speed with the short conversion time, there isn't overshoot. The response speed is almost unaffected when the torque impact on the shaft is changed.</span>
