At any time there are millions of athletes ages 6 to 18 years participating in sports-related activities and the number is increasing. Unfortunately, the number of overuse injuries is also on the rise. This increase is most likely associated with single-sport specialization before the onset of puberty. As physicians and health care providers, we must educate these young athletes, their parents, and coaches to ensure safety. Short breaks are recommended and everyone involved should understand the athlete should not train more than 5 days per week and must take off 2 to 4 months per year consecutively depending on the specific sport and position on the team. To understand the complexity of these overuse injuries, it is important to have knowledge of the unique characteristics of the immature musculoskeletal system, periods of rapid growth, and the function of the growth plate, which is often involved in these injuries.

In the last decade, there has been a rapid growth in the presence of clowns in hospitals, particularly in pediatric settings. The proliferation of clowns in health care settings has resulted in varying levels of professionalism and accountability. For this reason, there is a need to examine various forms of clowning, in particular therapeutic clowning in pediatric settings. The purpose of this article is to address what therapeutic clowning is and to describe the extent to which it can provide a complementary form of health care. In an attempt to apply theory to practice, the article will draw upon the experiences of a therapeutic clown within a pediatric setting while providing a historical and theoretical account of how clowns came to be in hospitals. Toward this end, a proposed model of therapeutic clowning will be offered which can be adapted for a variety of settings where children require specialized forms of play in order to enhance their coping, development and adjustment to life changes. Finally, current research on clowning in children's hospitals will be reviewed including a summary of findings from surveys administered at the Hospital for Sick Children.

The capability of GIS to be able to store, retrieve, display, and analyze large quantities of spatially referenced data has facilitated the rapid growth of geographic-based research within various health fields, including epidemiology and health care provisioning. This is reflected in the numerous texts focused entirely on GIS and health, as well as texts focused on geography and health that include substantial material on GIS. There are also journals where GIS-based health research frequently appears. This bibliography lists a number of these texts and journals. GIS-based health research is wide ranging, but several major themes can be identified. In this bibliography the first major theme presented is GIS-based visualization of health information, a topic which involves geocoding, disease-mapping methodologies, and alternative cartographic schemes of representation. The second major theme is GIS-derived measures for health research, where the focus is on how GIS has transformed how accessibility to health care is measured and enabled complex forms of environmental exposures to be derived for use in epidemiologic studies. The final theme is GIS-enabled analysis for health research where a deliberate choice was made to focus on those analytical areas which are only feasible through the specific spatial analytical capabilities of GIS.

The rapid growth of corporate investment in the Malaysian private hospital sector has had a considerable impact on the health care system. Sustained economic growth, the development of new urban areas, an enlarged middle class, and the inclusion of hospital insurance in salary packages have all contributed to a financially lucrative investment environment for hospital entrepreneurs. Many of Malaysia's most technologically advanced hospitals employing leading specialists are owned and operated as corporate business ventures. Corporate hospital investment has been actively encouraged by the government, which regards an expanded private sector as a vital complement to the public hospital system. Yet this rapid growth of corporately owned private hospitals has posed serious contradictions for health care policy in terms of issues such as equity, cost and quality, the effect on the wider health system, and the very role of the state in health care provision. This article describes the growth of corporate investment in Malaysia's private hospital sector and explores some of the attendant policy contradictions.

AbstractSHEA and the American Society for Quality's Health Care Division have been collaborating in areas of common concern to improve healthcare quality. We each possess a heritage of different but complementary approaches and stand a better chance of success together than apart. This presentation describes rapid growth of our interdisciplinary, international, special interest group and progress made thus far, as well as challenges facing hospital epidemiologists and quality improvement professionals.

The collection and storing of medical records pertaining to the health status of patients in an electronic form so as to allow; easy access, information sharing and making better medical decisions among other things is known as an Electronic Health Record (EHR). Data generated by health care providers from patient‟s diagnosis, prescription, health monitoring and other health related issues were basically kept on paper. However, the rapid proliferation of data has led to the advancement of effective management of these data to help bring about better decision making and also improvement in health care delivery. This paper highlights the importance of EHR, its role in delivering better health care and the development of a nation, taking cognizance of its adoption level in both the developed and developing countries. Strategic solution of integrating intelligent devices (Chatbots and glass) to burgeon the implementation of EHR so as to improve the overall health care of the populace of developing nations was proposed. Keywords: Electronic Health Record, Intelligent systems, Chatbots, Glass

This article begins with great optimism expressed by Tocqueville for America's future as the embodiment of the democratic state. It discusses the opportunity to express the liberal political ideals, arguing that its success was based on a community of common sensibility. An understanding of society and politics endowed the historian with the power to help remake health care. This article explores and compares the ways in which medicine is developed and applied in a number of different social, cultural, and physical contexts. It shows rapid growth, from a period in which European ideas, methods, and structures were adapted to the American context, to one in which the United States is at the forefront of large-scale initiatives in public health, disease control, and innovation in the biomedical sciences. Finally, it mentions the contradiction, most notably between profound faith in the technical capacities of medical science and equally profound dissatisfaction with the provision of health care.
