The archive and the processor: The internal logic of Web 2.0

In Web 2.0, there is a social dichotomy at work based upon and reflecting the underlying Von Neumann Architecture of computers. In the hegemonic Web 2.0 business model, users are encouraged to process digital ephemera by sharing content, making connections, ranking cultural artifacts, and producing digital content, a mode of computing I call ‘affective processing.’ The Web 2.0 business model imagines users to be a potential superprocessor. In contrast, the memory possibilities of computers are typically commanded by Web 2.0 site owners. They seek to surveil every user action, store the resulting data, protect that data via intellectual property, and mine it for profit. Users are less likely to wield control over these archives. These archives are comprised of the products of affective processing; they are archives of affect, sites of decontextualized data which can be rearranged by the site owners to construct knowledge about Web 2.0 users.

<p>This study explores how cultural heritage institutions (CHIs) have adopted Web 2.0 principles and applications for their digital collections and how users are responding to the Web 2.0-enabled environment in digital collections. The research aims to contribute discussion on whether CHIs have adapted well to the “democratic” nature of Web 2.0. It also aims to contribute discussion on how CHIs can improve their digital collections to better engage with users online. The research used quantitative content analysis to compare the adoption of Web 2.0 applications and principles across archives, libraries and museums and between Australasian and North American CHIs. It also used quantitative content analysis to explore the types of participatory activities offered in Web 2.0-enabled digital collections and the extent to which users have taken advantage of these forms of participation. One particular form of participation, commenting, was investigated using qualitative content analysis, to gain an understanding of how users respond to digital content. The research suggests that libraries are currently leading the adoption of Web 2.0 principles and applications for digital collections. It also appears that Australasian CHIs have been more proactive, compared to their North American counterparts, in making available Web 2.0-enabled digital collections. The research found that CHIs supported a range of different activities in their digital collections but activities encouraging multivocality and user-driven ranking of content were the most popular among both digital collections and their users.</p>


Undeniably the most favored web scripting language is PHP. Almost 80% of the internet’s server-side web applications are written in PHP which includes big giants like WordPress, Wikipedia, and Facebook. In present-day, at an accelerating pace, the quantity of digital content is burgeoning. A heterogeneous set of users' devices is being amassed by these contents and administering these contents manually is an infeasible solution engendering an increasing set of problems. A solution to this problem would be to switch to a web programming language, which can be compiled. We are describing an easy to deploy and a continuous conversion mechanism for converting existing Web 2.0 PHP application systems into Facebook’s HHVM supported Hack server-side application systems. We are trying to use the power of Hack language and amplify the performance of existing PHP server-side applications. Instead of interpreting all of your code Hack translates it to assembly and runs that instead, which can lead to an immense amount of increase in performance. We are using Hacktificator, a tool developed by Facebook Developers and our demo web application running on HHVM to test and convert user’s existing PHP codebase to Hack language. With this proposed methodology we do not have to make any change to existing codebase manually or hire new engineers for the conversion, nor do we have to take down our live systems. Conversion can be done on the fly and will result in approximately 2x to 20x better performance. The availability of this tool can save costs for manual conversion, save time as well as improve the user experience of websites with better performance

Issues related to intellectual property rights in the Web 2.0 environment are rarely discussed. This chapter investigates the issues surrounding copyright in the digital era, which the market is increasingly using social media. The chapter describes the legal risks confronting people on using content in the digital era and examines the issues in this area. Valuable discussion will be generated for all users of digital content. The chapter investigates copyrights in the digital era through a case study, gathering data through interviews conducted in the UK. Research findings show lack of knowledge and instruction in the use of digital content and information produced through social media is the main reason for emerging conflict in this area. Knowledge about IPRs, and specifically copyrights in e-learning, needs to be provided for people. One of the issues that must be addressed by the use of Web 2.0 to learners is a full explanation of copyright laws. This will prevent content generated in this environment from infringing copyright.

From the observation of school librarians’ usual practices in three secondary schools in Paris (2006-2009), with an ethnographic approach, the aim of this study is to better define the information culture, in particular which kinds of knowledge are necessary to learn, live and evolve in the information society context. Thus, the study points up that the web 2.0, in order to be an educational tool, needs an accompanied digital conduct. New training needs appear, characterized by the emergence of new knowledge (digital identity, traceability, informative survey...) and the reconfiguration of some others (information ethics, indexing, mediation, authority, intellectual property, relevance…).

In the Web 2.0 era, consumers of media are no longer mere recipients of digital content, but rather active commentators and cocreators online. However, the Internet rule predicts that 90% of users are passive ‘lurkers’, 9% edit content, and 1% actually create content. This study investigates Finns’ social media activities that apply to content creation, as well as the level of content engagement and sharing. The data come from Statistics Finland and are representative of the Finnish population between the ages of 16 and 74. The results show that Finnish users perceive themselves predominantly as occasional commentators of social media posts. Dissecting the social media activities users engage in, commenting posts is the most popular activity. Gender, age, and education best explain the differences between the types of social media activities investigated. Overall, the study shows that Finns actively engage in different types of online activities as well as the pervasiveness of sociodemographic variables in Finland.
