Modern business process management (BPM) is increasingly interesting for laboratory automation. End-to-end workflow automation and improved top-level systems integration for information technology (IT) and automation systems are especially prominent objectives. With the ISO Standard Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) 2.X, a system-independent and interdisciplinary accepted graphical process control notation is provided, allowing process analysis, while also being executable. The transfer of BPM solutions to structured laboratory automation places novel demands, for example, concerning the real-time-critical process and systems integration. The article discusses the potential of laboratory execution systems (LESs) for an easier implementation of the business process management system (BPMS) in hierarchical laboratory automation. In particular, complex application scenarios, including long process chains based on, for example, several distributed automation islands and mobile laboratory robots for a material transport, are difficult to handle in BPMSs. The presented approach deals with the displacement of workflow control tasks into life science specialized LESs, the reduction of numerous different interfaces between BPMSs and subsystems, and the simplification of complex process modelings. Thus, the integration effort for complex laboratory workflows can be significantly reduced for strictly structured automation solutions. An example application, consisting of a mixture of manual and automated subprocesses, is demonstrated by the presented BPMS-LES approach.

In the modern business scenario, organizations are vesting high efforts in managing process sustainability as part of their operations management practices. The global environmental concerns for the welfare of the society have facilitated this change. Research studies have reported Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as one of the prerequisites in developing and maintaining efficient business processes. The process sustainability related initiatives and various processes related regulatory compliances have created the need for sophisticated IT tools like BPM (Business Process Management) and BI (Business Intelligence) in organizations. Thus with the advancement of ICT, a strong desire to enhance the business process performance through BPM and BI applications is felt across organizations. However, there is scant research available on leveraging the advantages of these applications in sustainability development. Therefore, this paper aims to present a conceptual architecture framework using an integrated BPM and BI solution to develop an orientation among practitioners and academicians towards the inclusion of ICT in attaining a sustainable, energy efficient business operations or processes. The framework is based on the literature pertaining to the role of BPM and BI in process sustainability as well as from the inputs of practitioners involved in the field of BPM and BI.

Process model matching is a key activity in many business process management tasks. It is an activity that consists of detecting an alignment between process models by finding similar activities in two process models. This article proposes a method based on WordNet glosses to improve the effectiveness of process model matchers. The proposed method is composed of three steps. In the first step, all activities of the two BPs are extracted. Second, activity labels are expanded using word glosses and finally, similar activities are detected using the cosine similarity metric. Two experiments were conducted on well-known datasets to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. In the first one, an alignment is computed using the cosine similarity metric only and without a process of expansion. While, in the second experiment, the cosine similarity metric is applied to the expanded activities using glosses. The results of the experiments were promising and show that expanding activities using WordNet glosses improves the effectiveness of process model matchers.

Traditional enterprise information systems have many defects, so business process management (BPM) system was applied to the virtual enterprise and virtual enterprise process model is established based on BPM system. The dominant enterprise and the member enterprises used BPM system for their own information management system in the virtual enterprise. The BPM system model of the virtual enterprise was divided into the formation process and the operation process. The analysis method based on stochastic colored Petri net(SCPN) was also presented which can be used to model and analyze the process model in order to obtain the system performance analysis data. The virtual enterprise resources utilization rate can be seen. The model extends the application area of BPM system and provides a reference for the construction and management of virtual enterprise.

Business Process Management (BPM) research resulted in a plethora of methods, techniques, and tools to support the design, enactment, management, and analysis of operational business processes. This survey aims to structure these results and provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in BPM. In BPM the concept of a process model is fundamental. Process models may be used to configure information systems, but may also be used to analyze, understand, and improve the processes they describe. Hence, the introduction of BPM technology has both managerial and technical ramifications and may enable significant productivity improvements, cost savings, and flow-time reductions. The practical relevance of BPM and rapid developments over the last decade justify a comprehensive survey.

Through the analysis of the execution and dispatching principle of the Petri net, the business process management mode based on Petri net is proposed. We merge the place node and the transition node, and reside the token in the node. The only token in process instances and the sub-token in parallel process are introduced, which can avoid conflicts caused by multi-tokens. The business process model for the drawings design and approval is established, and it is verified by the workflow modeling system.
