Positive Leadership Behaviour and Flourishing: The Mediating Role of Trust in Information Technology Organizations

Leaders across the globe have the accountability of leading their team members, ensuring a high level of trust in workplace (TWP) to flourish and enabling organizations towards goal achievement. These leaders work closely with their employees by recognizing their strengths and appreciating their accomplishment. They empower employees to higher levels of performance, thus creating value for stakeholders. The purpose of this research was to investigate the mediating role of TWP between positive leadership and flourishing. A total of 203 employees from the top 10 information technology (IT) organizations participated in the survey and completed three standardized, valid and reliable instruments. It was found that employees do experience positive leadership, flourishing and TWP to a moderate extent. A significant relationship was found between positive leadership, flourishing and TWP. These two moderately affected employees flourishing at the workplace. A model was developed and tested, it was found to be a good fit. Positive leadership behaviour (PLB) and TWP significantly influenced flourishing of employees. TWP mediated the relationship between PLB and flourishing. Findings of this study suggest that positive leaders are perceived as someone who recognize and focus on the strengths and accomplishments of employees. The research outcome will help develop strategies for leaders to explore and imbibe positive leadership approaches which would aid in developing a positive relationship between the constructs to engage employees better and move towards organizational success. The study is an attempt to examine the relationship between the constructs and contribute towards PLB, TWP and flourishing theory in the Indian IT context.

This article presents the theoretical underpinnings of the framework together with a thorough review of the literature. This research indicates that there is a positive relationship between transformational leadership, knowledge management, and firm performance. The synthesis of the literature also lends support for the mediating role of information technology in the relationship between transformational leadership and knowledge management.

When teams operate in a dynamic and complex environment, their ability to adapt to changing demands is crucial for organizational success. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of empowering behaviors exhibited by team leaders in team adaptive performance by taking into account the mediating role of shared leadership displayed by team members and the moderating effect of access to resources. Data were collected from 82 work teams (i.e., 394 members and 82 immediate supervisors) in a public safety organization. Results of path analyses show that the relationship between empowering leader behaviors and team adaptive performance is mediated by shared leadership. Moreover, we found that the relationship between empowering leader behaviors and shared leadership is moderated by access to resources, such that this relationship is stronger when the level of access to resources is high. Overall, the findings shed light on the process through which team leaders can enhance the adaptive performance of their team.

Coronavirus stress with the restrictions and unexpected life changes has affected individuals and their satisfaction with life. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of optimism and hope on the relationship between coronavirus stress and subjective wellbeing among young adults in Turkey. A sample of 331 (M= 20.86 and 64% females) college students participated in this study. The results demonstrated that coronavirus stress was negatively associated with the college students’ sense of hope and optimism. Moreover, coronavirus stress had an indirect effect on subjective well-being through optimism and hope. Optimism and hope mitigated the adverse impacts of stress on well-being during the pandemic. These results indicated that young adults with a high level of stress due to coronavirus have lower optimism and hope, which in turn have less subjective well-being. The study findings hence highlight that being hopeful and optimistic are the potential resources to explain how coronavirus stress is related to subjective well-being.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating role of trust in the relationship of justice and employee engagement (EE) in Indian B-schools. Design/methodology/approach – Multiple regression was carried out on the responses obtained from 320 academics working in different Indian B-schools. Findings – The results showed that vertical trust (VT) partially mediates the procedural justice (PJ) and the EE relationship. Distributive justice, PJ, VT and EE were found to be significantly correlated with each other. Research limitations/implications – A very important implication from the findings is that the research will help the Indian B-schools engage their employees in a better manner and face the challenging environment. Future research can be carried out on finding the mediating effects of leader member exchange on VT-EE relationships with other levels of higher education. Originality/value – The current study empirically proved that a good level of PJ leads to a high level of VT and which ultimately results in engaged academics in Indian B-schools.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to understand the development of social capital in an Arab business environment, and provide an in-depth description of the nature and role of three key Arabic business relationship characteristics (ehsan,et-mooneandwasta), their impact on each other and key influencing factors.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative research design was used, in which face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with innovation teams (22 team members) at six industrial small and medium-sized enterprises in Saudi Arabia. The interviews were recorded and transcribed, then analyzed (thematic coding) through NVivo.FindingsThe findings suggest thatwasta,ehsanandet-moonealign closely with the three social capital dimensions (structural, cognitive and relational); thus, developing these three relationship characteristics most likely results in developing social capital. The findings also expand the description of the three business relationship characteristics. Moreover,ehsan,et-mooneandwastaappear to influence each other, and are affected by other factors such as an individual’s age and position, and the duration of the relationship.Ehsanhas a positive influence on the development ofet-moone, while the existence ofet-mooneappears to be necessary for the establishment ofwasta-capital. A high level ofehsanmight influence the relationship betweenet-mooneandwasta-use and limit the negative usage ofwasta.Practical implicationsInternational managers can improve the level ofehsanin their organizational and business relationships through assigning incentives and playing the role of moral champion to encourageehsanbehavior. Managers aiming to increaseet-moonemay choose team members with a high level ofehsan, emphasizing the development of personal relationships, and providing opportunities for socialization both inside and outside the workplace. A high level ofehsanandet-moonewill assist managers to develop and usewasta.Originality/valueThis study makes a threefold contribution to the literature. First, it provides an expanded description of the three Arabic business relationship characteristics and how they align closely with the dimensions of social capital.Wastaaligns with the structural dimension andehsanaligns with the cognitive dimension, whileet-moonealigns closely with the relational dimension. Second, it suggests and shows how the three relationship characteristics might interact with each other.Ehsanappears to influenceet-moone, and also the relationship betweenet-mooneandwasta.Et-mooneappears to have a positive influence onwastause. Third, the findings also indicate that there might be other factors (e.g. age and position) that influence the interactions between the three business relationship characteristics.

Purpose This study aims to identify the mediating role of cooperation agreements in the relationship between family involvement in international firms and their level of international commitment. Design/methodology/approach The study focuses on Spanish international wine and olive oil companies that have varying levels of family involvement. The final sample consists of 263 companies. SmartPLS was used to perform the analysis. Findings A higher level of family involvement in business implies greater difficulties with cooperation agreements. Additionally, family involvement is negatively associated with the firm’s level of international commitment, and the perceived difficulties of cooperation agreements mediate this relationship. Practical implications This study is of interest to business managers with different levels of family involvement. The study clarifies their perceptions of cooperation agreements and international business commitment. Managers of firms with a high level of family involvement should emphasize the multiple benefits of cooperation agreements for international strategy performance rather than the drawbacks of cooperation. Additionally, through cooperation, companies can learn about destination markets, which may help them to focus their resources effectively in those markets. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature on the internationalization strategies of family businesses. This study is the first to address the mediating role of cooperation agreements in the relationship between family involvement and international commitment.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate how the mobility of team members affects team creativity in knowledge-worker teams and the mediating role of team transactive memory system (TMS) and team creative efficacy.Design/methodology/approachMultiple surveys were conducted on team leaders and members in knowledge-worker teams in China. A total of 94 teams were analyzed by adopting the confirmatory factor analyses, hierarchical regression analysis and bootstrap analysis method.FindingsThe results show that frequent team member mobility is negatively related to a knowledge-worker team's creativity, and the relationship is mediated by team TMS and creative efficacy.Originality/valueThis study contributes to a deeper understanding of how the mobility of team members affects team creativity in knowledge-worker teams by exploring the underlying mechanisms from the perspective of team cognition. Specifically, team TMS and creative efficacy mediate the relationship between team member mobility and team creativity.

Information technology (IT) moves at a fast rate of utilizing modern electrical equipment. Thus, all the sectors of the world economy do face challenges to deal with the environmental problems and their impacts on the work environment and green information technology (GIT) become important to play its role in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner (McCabe, 2009). In Sri Lanka, banks recently shift towards green IT (GIT) practices. However, there is a gap in the literature, and empirical investigations regarding the relationships among GIT practices, environmental performances of banks (EPB) and employees’ attitudes on GIT (EAG). Hence, this study aims to explore the relationship between GIT in place and EPB and to assess the possible mediating role of EAG in the relationship between GIT and EPB. The analyses reveal that GIT practices have a positive relationship to and significant impact on EPB. The study also confirms the mediating partial role of EAG in the relationship between GIT and EPB. This study especially contributes to empirically understand the same as an addition to fill the literature gap in relation to GIT, EPB, and EAG.

We explored the mediating role of perceived organizational support (POS) on the relationship between job security and 2 dimensions important in employee work outcomes: extrarole behavior and turnover intention. Participants were 212 subordinate team members and their supervisors, who were employed by an air transportation group in China, and we found that POS partially mediated the relationship between job security and extrarole behavior and fully mediated the relationship between job security and turnover intention. Implications for management practice and limitations in this study are discussed.
