Technical schools are an integral part of the education system, and yet, little is known about student learning at such institutions. We consider whether assessments of student learning can be jointly administered to both university and technical school students. We examine whether differential test functioning may bias inferences regarding the relative performance of students in quantitative reasoning and critical reading. We apply item response theory models that allow for differences in response behavior as a function of school context. Items show small yet consistent differential functioning in favor of university students, especially for the quantitative reasoning test. These differences are shown to affect inferences regarding effect size differences between the university and technical students (effect sizes can fall by 44% in quantitative reasoning and 24% in critical reading). Differential test functioning influences the rank orderings of institutions by up to roughly 5 percentile points on average.

In this paper we present results concerning how students in a Danish upper secondary school negotiate between sports culture and the prevailing norms of youth culture in a local school context. The study shows that it can be rather difficult for young people to combine sports culture with the local youth culture, because living a healthy and physically active life doesn’t fit very well with the prevailing norms of youth culture, which involve a dominant social arena characterized by parties and alcohol. By applying the figurational sociology of Norbert Elias, this article shows that being included in a sports figuration can result in exclusion from the youth figuration. Young athletic students are therefore in a constant process of negotiation, where they struggle to fit into both sport and non-sport related contexts, because it is important to belong within both. The study is based on 16 focus group interviews [N=120] conducted over four years in one Danish upper secondary school.

Abstract The self-determination theory claims that three basic needs (autonomy, relatedness, and competency) guide the human motivation. This theory serves as background for many psychological instruments. However, no one differentiates the students’ occurrence perceptions and students’ values about the basic needs. The School Aspirations Questionnaire has this goal, but its structural validity was not investigated yet. The present study evaluated the structural validity of the questionnaire. The sample was composed by 716 middle and high school students from a private school in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. A model was tested. This model possessed eight correlated latent variables representing, in terms of values and occurrence perceptions, the three basic needs and the immediate pleasure domain. The model showed good data fit, permitting the conclusion that the questionnaire is capable of distinguishing in the school context the values and the occurrence perceptions about the basic needs, as well the immediate pleasure domain.

The main problem in education today is the lack of effectiveness in the learning process. This can be seen from the average student learning outcomes which are always still low. Especially for vocational high school students who emphasize learning skills in order to produce work-ready graduates, but it is inversely proportional to the facts in the field. Low learning outcomes are indicated because the learning conditions are still conventional (lectures, practicum, and discussions) where teachers are still a source of learning (teacher centered). This study aims to determine the effect of the project based blended learning model on learning outcomes of vocational high school students. This research was conducted through a literature review and relevant research results and was continued through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD). From the research it was found that there was a significant positive influence between the variable model of project based blended learning and student learning outcomes, which means that student learning outcomes can be improved through the application of a project based blended learning model.

AbstractThe purpose of this research is to find out whether by using algebra ladder snake learning media can improve students' math ability and can improve student learning activity. This research is a Classroom Action Research. The subject of this research is the third grade students of SD Tamansiswa Sukadamai of Asahan Regency, amounting to 30 students. And the object in this study is the use of learning media ladder algebra snake in improving students' math skills and student learning activeness. The instrument used in this research is the students' math test in the form of test essay and observation sheet. The average value of student activity observation observation cycle I and II is 2.6 and 3.9. Exhaustiveness of preliminary test was obtained at 23.33%. After learning by using algebra ladder learning medium, there was an increase in the students' mathematics ability test of cycles I and II of 62.33% and 93.33%. It can be concluded that learning using algebra stepping snake learning media can improve the mathematics ability of elementary school students.

This study aims to analyze the application of the cooperative learning model of the Student Team Achivment Division type in improving the learning outcomes of elementary school students and to find out the difference in the increase in learning outcomes obtained by students when using the Cooperative learning model of the Student Team Achivment Division type. The difference in the improvement of learning outcomes obtained from 10 relevant journals was caused by the subjects selected by different researchers such as different research sites, different abilities possessed by each selected subject, and different years of research. This type of research is quantitative research using the meta-analysis method. The research begins with formulating research, looking for relevant journals available in electronic media. Based on the analysis of the cooperative learning model, the Student Team Achivment Division type can improve student learning outcomes by an average of 78.59 from the previous 53.53. Based on this research, the application of the cooperative learning model type Student Team Achivment Division can be used as a suggestion to be applied in elementary schools.
