A Pooled Analysis of Four Pivotal Studies of Rivaroxaban for the Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism after Orthopaedic Surgery: Effects of Specified Co-Medications.

Abstract RECORD is a pivotal clinical trial program investigating rivaroxaban – an oral, direct Factor Xa inhibitor – for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) following elective total hip and knee replacement (THR and TKR). The four multinational, randomized, double-blind, double-dummy phase III studies (RECORD1, 2, 3 and 4) in patients undergoing THR or TKR surgery, comparing rivaroxaban with enoxaparin 40 mg once daily (od) or 30 mg twice daily (bid), have been completed. Patients (N=12,729) were randomized to receive oral rivaroxaban 10 mg od starting 6–8 hours after surgery, or subcutaneous enoxaparin 40 mg od starting the evening before surgery (RECORD1–3) or 30 mg bid starting 12–24 hours after wound closure or adequate hemostasis (RECORD4). Those undergoing THR received rivaroxaban or enoxaparin for 31–39 days in RECORD1, and rivaroxaban for 31–39 days or enoxaparin for 10–14 days followed by placebo in RECORD2. In RECORD3 and 4 (TKR), prophylaxis was for 10–14 days. A pooled analysis of the results of all four RECORD studies evaluated the effect of rivaroxaban on the composite of symptomatic VTE and death, and bleeding. The aim of the present subgroup analysis was to investigate potential drug–drug interactions with specified co-medications, by describing the risk of on-treatment bleeding in the total study duration pool of all four RECORD studies. The co-medications investigated were non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), which are commonly used pain medications known to have a pharmacodynamic effect on bleeding. There was no restriction on the choice of specific drug or on the dose of ASA in the study protocols. These pre-specified analyses focused on on-treatment, adjudicated bleeding events – any bleeding, and the composite of major bleeding, and clinically relevant non-major bleeding – after the first tablet intake (rivaroxaban or matching placebo) and up to 2 days after the last dose of medication. Co-medication use was considered a time-dependent covariate, and relative bleeding rates with and without the co-medication were calculated for the rivaroxaban and enoxaparin/placebo groups separately. The time relative to surgery (day of surgery was day 1) was stratified into three time periods (days 1–3, days 4–7, and day 7 onwards), based on the consideration that the risk of a first bleeding event decreases over time after surgery, and because the prevalence of co-medication use can vary over time. Bleeding rates were recorded for each of these time periods over the at-risk period, which extended from the day of surgery until the last day of study medication intake +2 days or until event onset (recurrent bleeds were not included in the analyses). Rate ratios were derived using stratified Mantel–Haenszel methods. The ratios of the bleeding rate for exposed versus unexposed patient-days in the rivaroxaban group were compared with the corresponding rate ratio for the enoxaparin/placebo group for bleeding events. The concomitant use of ASA in the rivaroxaban groups showed rate ratios similar to those obtained in the enoxaparin/placebo group, for all bleeding endpoints. Rate ratios for bleeding endpoints were also similar between the rivaroxaban and the enoxaparin/placebo groups with concomitant use of NSAIDs. This RECORD1–4 subanalysis indicates that the use of these co-medications does not increase bleeding risk in patients taking rivaroxaban, compared with enoxaparin

Abstract Abstract 2260 Introduction: Edoxaban is an oral, once-daily, direct factor Xa inhibitor in clinical development for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic events. Two randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, phase III studies (STARS E-3 and STARS J-V) have been conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of edoxaban compared to enoxaparin for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA). The objective of this pooled analysis was to investigate the effects of edoxaban on key coagulation biomarkers. Methods: Patients (N=1,326) undergoing TKA or THA in Japan and Taiwan were randomized to receive oral edoxaban 30 mg once daily (qd) or subcutaneous enoxaparin 2,000 IU twice daily (bid; equivalent to 20 mg bid) for 11–14 days. Edoxaban was initiated 6–24 hours after surgery and enoxaparin was initiated 24–36 hours after surgery, which is the standard of care in Japan. Blood samples were collected for coagulation biomarker measurements pre-operation, post-operation (pre-treatment, Day 0), Day 7 (prior to administration of the next dose) and completion day (Day 11–14). The primary efficacy outcome was the composite of symptomatic and asymptomatic deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). The principal safety outcome was the incidence of major and clinically relevant non-major (CRNM) bleeding. Pharmacodynamic endpoints included key coagulation biomarkers such as D-dimer, prothrombin fragment F1+2 (F1+2) and soluble fibrin monomer complex (SFMC). Results: A total of 1,307 patients received at least 1 dose of edoxaban or enoxaparin. There were no clinically relevant differences in baseline characteristics between the treatment groups. The mean age was 68 years, mean body weight was 58.8 kg and 83% of patients were female. Overall, edoxaban significantly reduced the incidence of the composite of symptomatic and asymptomatic DVT and PE compared with enoxaparin (5.1% vs 10.7%, P<0.001). The incidence of major and CRNM bleeding events was 4.6% vs 3.7% in the edoxaban and enoxaparin groups, respectively (P=0.427). For both treatment groups, D-dimer and SFMC levels were reduced at Day 7 compared to post-operation/pretreatment levels, then increased slightly by Day 11–14. Levels of F1+2 also decreased by Day 7 in both treatment groups and further decreased by Day 11–14. However, for each coagulation biomarker, levels were significantly lower in the edoxaban group compared to the enoxaparin group at both Day 7 and Day 11–14. (Table, P<0.001). Conclusion: Edoxaban 30 mg qd is superior to enoxaparin 20 mg bid in the prevention of VTE events with significant reduction of D-dimer, F1+2 and SFMC following TKA and THA. Abstract PURPOSE We investigated the long term impact of SRS and WBRT in two large prospective phase III trials. METHODS Patients with 1–4 BMs +/- resection were randomized to SRS or WBRT. Cognitive deterioration was a drop of &gt;1 standard deviation from baseline in &gt;2/6 cognitive measures (CM). Quality of life (QOL) scores were scored 0–100 point scale. CM and QOL scores were modeled using baseline adjusted Linear Mixed Models (LMM) with uncorrelated random intercept for subject and random slopes for time. Differences over time between groups and the effect of &gt;2 cognitive scores with &gt;2 SD change from baseline were assessed. RESULTS 88 patients were included with median follow up of 24 months. We observed decreasing CM over time (SRS: 4/6; WBRT: 5/6). Mean CM was significantly higher in SRS for Total recall and Delayed Recall at 3, 6, 9, 12 months. More patients in WBRT arm declined 1 SD in &gt;1 and &gt;2 CM at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. A 1 SD decline in &gt;3 CM at 1 year was 21% SRS vs 47% WBRT (p=0.02). SRS had fewer patients with a 2 SD decline in &gt;1 CM at every time point. SRS had fewer patients with a 2 SD decline at &gt;2 and &gt;3 CM. WBRT had lower QOL at 3 months, but switched to SRS having lower QOL at 24 months for PWB, EWB, FWB, FactG, BR, and FactBR (p&lt; 0.05). A 2 SD decline in cognition decreased mean FWB by 6.4 units (95% CI: -11, -1.75; p=0.007) and decreased QOL by 5.1 units (95% CI: -7.7, -2.5; p&lt; 0.001). CONCLUSIONS We report the first pooled prospective study demonstrating the long term outcomes of patients with BMs after cranial radiation. WBRT was associated with worse cognitive outcomes. Impaired cognition is associated with worse QOL.

Abstract Background Anticoagulation in hospitalized COVID-19 patients has been associated with survival benefit; however, the optimal anticoagulant strategy has not yet been defined. The objective of this meta-analysis was to investigate the effect of intermediate-to-therapeutic versus prophylactic anticoagulation for thromboprophylaxis on the primary outcome of in-hospital mortality and other patient-centered secondary outcomes in COVID-19 patients. Methods MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases were searched from inception to August 10th 2021. Cohort studies and randomized clinical trials that assessed the efficacy and safety of intermediate-to-therapeutic versus prophylactic anticoagulation in hospitalized COVID-19 patients were included. Baseline characteristics and relevant data of each study were extracted in a pre-designed standardized data-collection form. The primary outcome was all-cause in-hospital mortality and the secondary outcomes were incidence of thrombotic events and incidence of any bleeding and major bleeding. Pooled analysis with random effects models yielded relative risk with 95 % CIs. Results This meta-analysis included 42 studies with 28,055 in-hospital COVID-19 patients totally. Our pooled analysis demonstrated that intermediate-to-therapeutic anticoagulation was not associated with lower in-hospital mortality (RR=1.12, 95 %CI 0.99-1.25, p=0.06, I2=77 %) and lower incidence of thrombotic events (RR=1.30, 95 %CI 0.79-2.15, p=0.30, I2=88 %), but increased the risk of any bleeding events (RR=2.16, 95 %CI 1.79-2.60, p<0.01, I2=31 %) and major bleeding events significantly (RR=2.10, 95 %CI 1.77-2.51, p<0.01, I2=11 %) versus prophylactic anticoagulation. Moreover, intermediate-to-therapeutic anticoagulation decreased the incidence of thrombotic events (RR=0.71, 95 %CI 0.56-0.89, p=0.003, I2=0 %) among critically ill COVID-19 patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU), with increased bleeding risk (RR=1.66, 95 %CI 1.37-2.00, p<0.01, I2=0 %) and unchanged in-hospital mortality (RR=0.94, 95 %CI 0.79-1.10, p=0.42, I2=30 %) in such patients. The Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation certainty of evidence ranged from very low to moderate. Conclusions We recommend the use of prophylactic anticoagulation against intermediate-to-therapeutic anticoagulation among unselected hospitalized COVID-19 patients considering insignificant survival benefits but higher risk of bleeding in the escalated thromboprophylaxis strategy. For critically ill COVID-19 patients, the benefits of intermediate-to-therapeutic anticoagulation in reducing thrombotic events should be weighed cautiously because of its association with higher risk of bleeding. Abstract Background The optimal duration of anticoagulation after a first unprovoked venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains controversial. Deciding to stop or continue anticoagulant therapy indefinitely after completing 3 to 6 months of initial treatment requires balancing the long-term risk of recurrent VTE if anticoagulation is stopped against the long-term risk of major bleeding if anticoagulation is continued. However, knowledge of the long-term risk for major bleeding events during extended anticoagulation in this patient population is limited. We plan to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify the risk for major bleeding events during extended oral anticoagulation in patients with first unprovoked VTE. Methods Electronic databases including MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials will be systematically searched with the assistance of an information specialist (from inception to March 1, 2019) to identify randomized controlled trials and prospective cohort studies reporting major bleeding during extended oral anticoagulation in patients with first unprovoked VTE, who have completed at least 3 months of initial anticoagulant therapy. Study selection, risk of bias assessment, and data extraction will be performed independently by at least two investigators. The number of major bleeding events and person-years of follow-up will be used to calculate the rate (events per 100 person-years) with its 95% confidence interval for each study cohort, during clinically relevant time periods of extended anticoagulant therapy. Results will be pooled using random effect meta-analysis. Discussion The planned systematic review and meta-analysis will provide reliable estimates of the risk for major bleeding events during extended anticoagulation. This information will help inform patient prognosis and assist clinicians with balancing the risks and benefits of treatment to guide management of unprovoked VTE. Abstract Aims Detailed evidence on the societal costs of venous thromboembolism (VTE), i.e. deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and of subsequent major bleeding events, e.g. intracranial and gastrointestinal bleedings, is limited. The objective was to estimate the average 3-year societal event costs attributable to VTE and subsequent major bleedings in Denmark. Methods and results Based on nationwide Danish registers, each incident patient diagnosed with VTE in the period from 2004 to 2016 was identified and matched with four non-VTE patients by nearest-neighbour propensity score matching. For bleeding patients, the reference cohort was VTE patients without bleedings. Event costs in terms of VTE, DVT, PE, and major bleedings in VTE patients were measured by the ‘difference-in-actual-cost’ method within 3 years after the incidence. Societal costs included healthcare costs (primary care, hospital, and prescription medicine), municipality home care services, and production loss. The study population included 74 137 VTE incident patients (DVT: 43 099; PE: 31 038), and 4887 VTE patients with a major bleeding within 3 years from VTE diagnosis. The 3-year attributable societal VTE event costs were 40 024 EUR (DVT: 34 509 EUR; PE: 50 083 EUR) with 53% of these costs appearing in the first incident year. Similar results for major bleedings were 51 168 EUR with 46% of these costs appearing in the first incident year. Conclusion The societal costs of VTE and subsequent major bleedings are substantial and ought to be considered. Estimated costs of events may be informative in evaluating the impact of preventive interventions targeting VTE and subsequent major bleedings.

Purpose Low-molecular-weight heparins are currently the recommended antithrombotic therapy for treatment and prevention of malignancy-related venous thromboembolism. Currently, the evidence evaluating direct oral anticoagulants versus low-molecular-weight heparins or a vitamin K antagonist in cancer patients with hematologic malignancies is limited. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of direct oral anticoagulants for venous thromboembolism treatment or stroke prevention for non-valvular atrial fibrillation in patients with hematologic malignancies. Methods This was a retrospective evaluation of adult patients with hematologic malignancies who received at least one dose of the Food and Drug Administration-approved direct oral anticoagulant for venous thromboembolism treatment or stroke prevention. We determined the frequency of major bleeding events, non-major bleeding events, stroke, systemic embolism, appropriateness of initial direct oral anticoagulant doses, holding practices prior to procedures, and the rate of all-cause mortality. An analysis was also performed to compare the incidence of bleeding between patients with a history of hematopoietic stem cell transplant to non-transplant patients. Results A total of 103 patients were identified, with the majority of patients receiving rivaroxaban for venous thromboembolism treatment. Major bleeding events occurred in four patients and no fatal bleeding events occurred. Non-major bleeding occurred in 29 patients, most commonly epistaxis and bruising. Two patients experienced a systemic embolism while on direct oral anticoagulant therapy. Conclusion Direct oral anticoagulants may be a safe and effective alternative for anticoagulation therapy in patients with hematologic malignancies. However, larger prospective studies comparing direct oral anticoagulants to low-molecular-weight heparins or vitamin K antagonists are warranted to compare efficacy and safety outcomes in this patient population.

Abstract Four multinational, randomized, double-blind, double-dummy phase III studies (RECORD1, 2, 3 and 4) investigated the oral, direct Factor Xa inhibitor rivaroxaban for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing major orthopaedic surgery. A total of 12,729 patients were randomized to receive oral rivaroxaban 10 mg once daily (od) starting 6–8 hours after surgery, or subcutaneous enoxaparin 40 mg od starting the evening before surgery (RECORD1–3), or 30 mg bid starting 12–24 hours after wound closure or adequate hemostasis (RECORD4). In both RECORD1 and 2, patients undergoing total hip replacement (THR) were given rivaroxaban for 31–39 days. Enoxaparin was given for 31–39 days in RECORD1 or 10–14 days in RECORD2. In RECORD3 and 4, patients undergoing total knee replacement (TKR) received prophylaxis for 10–14 days. All patients were followed up for 30–35 days after the last dose of study medication. All outcomes, including symptomatic outcomes, were adjudicated by the same independent, blinded committees for all four studies. In each of the studies, the rivaroxaban regimens tested significantly reduced the incidence of the primary efficacy outcome (total VTE; the composite of any deep vein thrombosis [DVT], non-fatal pulmonary embolism [PE], and all-cause mortality) compared with enoxaparin regimens tested, with similar rates of bleeding in both groups. The rivaroxaban regimens also consistently reduced the incidence of major VTE (the composite of proximal DVT, non-fatal PE, and VTE-related death) in all four trials compared with the enoxaparin regimens tested. This pre-specified pooled analysis was performed on all randomized patients who received at least one dose of double-blind study medication to evaluate the effect of rivaroxaban on the composite of symptomatic VTE (comprising DVT or PE) and death, and bleeding. These primary outcomes were analyzed at day 12±2 in the active treatment pool (i.e. during the enoxaparin-controlled period common to all studies, to allow for unbiased comparison with enoxaparin), and for the total study duration pool (planned treatment period and 30–35 days follow-up). The results are shown in the table. Rivaroxaban significantly reduced the incidence of symptomatic VTE and death compared with enoxaparin regimens at day 12±2 (0.47% vs 0.97%; p=0.001) and for the total study duration (0.81% vs 1.63%; p&lt;0.001). Rivaroxaban was not associated with a statistically significant increased risk of major bleeding (Table). These data demonstrate that in the regimens tested, rivaroxaban reduced the composite of major clinical outcomes compared with enoxaparin regimens, with no significant increase in the risk of major bleeding in patients undergoing major orthopaedic surgery. Abstract Abstract 1157 Background: Venous thromboembolism [VTE] is the second highest cause of mortality among patients with cancer. However, pharmacological thromboprophylaxis for patients with solid tumor is only recommended during hospitalization. Primary outpatient thromboprophylaxis is not a widely accepted practice. Objective: Determine safety and efficacy of outpatient primary VTE prophylaxis in patients with solid tumors. Data sources: A systematic review was conducted using MEDLINE and EMBASE up to June 2012. Key search words included venous thromboembolism, malignancy, anticoagulants, and chemotherapy. Studies were considered for our meta-analysis if they included outpatient primary pharmacological thromboprophylaxis in adult patients with active solid cancer. All the information was independently reviewed by 2 of the authors [MP, SJ] and a third reviewer resolved discrepancies. The measure of association was calculated with R (R: A Language and Environment for Statistical, R Development Core Team, www.R-project.org), R META package (Version 0.8–2, Author: Guido Schwarzer). The Q statistic was calculated and a formal test of homogeneity was conducted. Random-effects model was preferred in case of heterogeneity. Results: A total of 1371 abstracts were reviewed and 29 manuscripts were fully abstracted. Eight randomized controlled trials including 6706 patients were analyzed. There were less VTE events with outpatient prophylaxis: odds ratio [OR] of 0.53 (95% CI, 0.40–0.70). Six studies used low or ultra-low molecular weight heparin and two studies used warfarin. In the subgroup analysis of heparin based primary prophylaxis, there was a significant reduction in VTE events [OR 0.47, 95% CI, 0.34–0.64], no significant heterogeneity [FIG 1]. In addition, there was no difference in major bleeding events between groups [OR 1.48, 95% CI, 0.89–2.46]. Five studies reported mortality data; there was significant heterogeneity between studies. Conclusions: Heparin based outpatient VTE prophylaxis in patients with solid tumors reduced by half the risk of VTE with no significant differences in major bleeding events. The current publications do not allow a meaningful grouped analysis of survival data, improved patient selection is necessary in order to adequately target VTE prevention strategies. Abstract Abstract 500 Rivaroxaban for Thromboprophylaxis after Total Hip or Knee Replacement Surgery: Comparison of Outcomes of the XAMOS and RECORD Studies. Patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery are at risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Rivaroxaban has been approved for clinical use in this indication based on the extensive phase III RECORD program, which investigated the efficacy and safety of oral rivaroxaban regimens compared with subcutaneous enoxaparin regimens in patients undergoing elective total hip or knee replacement surgery. XAMOS is a phase IV, non-interventional, open-label cohort study that compared rivaroxaban with any pharmacological prophylaxis used in routine clinical practice for VTE prevention after major orthopedic surgery of the hip or knee. An additional aim of the XAMOS study was to assess whether the results from the phase III RECORD studies would be reflected in routine clinical practice. The XAMOS study, which ran from 2009 to 2011, collected data on the incidence of adverse events (including symptomatic thromboembolic and bleeding events) in adult patients from 252 centers in 37 countries worldwide, who underwent elective hip or knee replacement surgery (or hip fracture surgery, where appropriate) and received rivaroxaban or other pharmacological prophylaxis (standard of care). The attending physician determined the type, duration, and dose of drug. Of the 17,701 patients enrolled, 8778 received rivaroxaban and 8635 received standard of care, of whom 7055 (81.7%) received low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). Primary hip/knee replacement surgery accounted for >90% of all procedures. Baseline demographics (e.g. age, sex, body weight, and ethnicity) were similar for patients receiving rivaroxaban, standard of care, or LMWH, and were also similar to those of patients who received rivaroxaban in the RECORD program. LMWH was the comparator in the RECORD program; therefore, the XAMOS study also compared outcomes with LMWH and rivaroxaban. Data for the LMWH group were similar to the standard-of-care group. Rates of symptomatic arterial, venous, and all thromboembolic events in XAMOS were lower in the rivaroxaban group compared with the LMWH group (Figure 1). The data are consistent with the results of the RECORD1–4 pooled analysis, which showed a significantly lower incidence of symptomatic VTE and all-cause mortality in patients receiving rivaroxaban compared with those receiving enoxaparin (Figure 2). The rates of treatment-emergent major bleeding events (RECORD definition) were 0.4% vs 0.3% in the rivaroxaban and LMWH groups, respectively (odds ratio [OR]=1.28; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.75–2.18; Figures 1 and 2), and were similar to those in the RECORD1–4 pooled analysis (day 12±2 active treatment pool: 0.3% [rivaroxaban] vs 0.2% [enoxaparin]; OR=1.62; 95% CI 0.77–3.53; Figure 2). When the European Medicines Agency (EMA) definition for treatment-emergent major bleeding was used, the incidence of major bleeding was slightly higher (nonsignificant) for patients receiving rivaroxaban compared with those receiving LMWH in the XAMOS study (1.7% vs 1.4%; OR=1.19; 95% CI: 0.92–1.53; Figures 1 and 2); these results were also similar to those of the RECORD1–4 pooled analysis (day 12±2 active treatment pool: 2.0% [rivaroxaban] vs 1.7% [enoxaparin]; OR=1.20; 95% CI: 0.91–1.57). XAMOS is the first study presenting real-world experience of the efficacy and safety of rivaroxaban for the prevention of VTE after major orthopedic surgery of the hip or knee. The results of XAMOS showed that rivaroxaban was associated with a significantly lower incidence of symptomatic VTE compared with LMWH, without a significant increase in the risk of major bleeding. These findings are consistent with those obtained in the RECORD studies, and indicate that the results of the RECORD program can be translated into the routine clinical setting. Abstract Background Venous thromboembolism (VTE), comprising deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, is a frequent complication in cancer patients. During anticoagulant treatment for VTE, the risk of major bleeding events (MBE) is 2- to 6-fold higher in cancer patients than in those without cancer. It is unknown whether the clinical presentation and course of anticoagulant-related MBE in cancer patients differ from patients without cancer. Methods Individual patient data from 4 randomized controlled phase III trials in which factor Xa inhibitors (rivaroxaban, apixaban, and edoxaban) were compared with vitamin K antagonists for the treatment of VTE were used for the present analysis. The severity of the clinical presentation and clinical course of anticoagulant-related MBE were compared between patients with and without cancer. Using predefined criteria, the severity of the clinical presentation and course of MBE were classified into four categories by independent adjudicators, who were blinded to treatment allocation. Category 1 indicates a mild clinical presentation or course, while category 4 indicates a severe presentation or course (Table 1). A one-stage meta-analysis was used to estimate crude odds ratios (ORs) and ORs adjusted for age, sex, and type of anticoagulant treatment with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the effect of cancer on the severity of the clinical presentation and course. For this analysis categories 3 and 4 were combined. We also explored the cause and site of bleeding in these patients. Results The study group comprised 290 patients with MBE, of whom 50 (17%) had active cancer or were diagnosed with cancer during follow-up. The clinical presentation was judged to be severe (category 3 or 4) in 38% of patients with cancer and 44% of patients without cancer (adjusted OR 0.90, 95% CI 0.47-1.72). Clinical course was judged to be severe in 20% and 25% of patients with and without cancer, respectively (adjusted OR 0.75, 95% CI 0.35-1.61) (Table 2). The bleeding pattern varied significantly between the two groups (p=0.002); cancer patients more often had gastrointestinal (52% vs. 35%) and vaginal (14% vs. 6%) MBE, whereas intracranial (19% vs. 6% and retroperitoneal (5% vs. 0%) MBE occurred more often in patients without cancer (Table 3). MBE was related to the tumor site in 40% of cancer patients. Conclusion The findings of the present study indicate that the clinical presentation and course of anticoagulant-related MBE are not more severe in cancer patients than in patients without cancer, which is reassuring for physicians who treat cancer-associated VTE.
