Objectives: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between daily physical activity and sonographically measured bone status among women during the lactation period. Methods: Final participants were 152 women 4 months after childbirth. Bone status of the participants was measured using quantitative ultrasonometry of the calcaneus (speed of sound). Daily physical activity was assessed using the Japanese version of International Physical Activity Questionnaire short version. After getting the International Physical Activity Questionnaire results, we classified participants into three categories (low/moderate/high) according to a protocol. Participants categorized into the low group according to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire were considered to be in the low physical activity group and those categorized into the moderate and high groups were considered to be in the moderate to vigorous physical activity group. Results: Speed of sound was significantly higher in the moderate to vigorous physical activity group (moderate to vigorous physical activity versus low physical activity, 1533 m/s versus 1523 m/s, p = 0.03). Daily physical activity was significantly associated with speed of sound, even after adjustment for confounding factors and prognosticators ( β = 0.195, p = 0.02). Conclusion: Sonographically measured bone status was significantly higher in women who were physically active than in those who were physically inactive, suggesting that daily physical activity might help to maintain good bone status.

Background:Subjective measures of moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) rely on relative intensity whereas objective measures capture absolute intensity; thus, fit individuals and unfit individuals may perceive the same activity differently.Methods:Adults (N = 211) wore the SenseWear Armband (SWA) for 10 consecutive days to objectively assess sedentary time and MVPA. On day 8, participants completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) to subjectively assess sitting time and MVPA. Fitness was assessed via a maximal treadmill test, and participants were classified as unfit if the result was in the bottom tertile of the study population by sex or fit if in the upper 2 tertiles.Results:Overall, estimates of MVPA between the IPAQ and SWA were not significantly different (IPAQ minus SWA, 67.4 ± 919.1 MVPA min/wk, P = .29). However, unfit participants overestimated MVPA using the IPAQ by 37.3% (P = .02), but fit participants did not (P = .99). This between-group difference was due to overestimation, using the IPAQ, of moderate activity by 93.8 min/wk among the unfit individuals, but underestimation of moderate activity among the fit participants by 149.4 min/wk.Conclusion:Subjective measures of MVPA using the IPAQ varied by fitness category; unfit participants overestimated their MVPA and fit participants accurately estimated their MVPA.

Background:Questionnaires have been broadly used to assess physical activity in adolescents, however validation studies, although essential, are not always performed.Objective:The present work aims to determine the validity of the Portuguese version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents against 3 axis Actigraph accelerometers.Method:A cross-sectional study was conducted, with a sample of 222 adolescents, with a mean age of 15.6 years (SD=2.05). After translation and cross cultural adaptation, data obtained from the questionnaire was correlated to accelerometers data, using Spearman correlation coefficient. Percentages of agreement of physical activity tertiles obtained by each method were tested using Cohen’s Kappa. Statistical analysis was performed for the total sample, per sex and per age group.Results:A significant correlation between the questionnaire and accelerometer was found for older adolescent boys, for total physical activity (ρ=0.372;P<0.01), and for moderate to vigorous physical activity (ρ=0.428;P<0.01) No correlations were found for the younger adolescents and girls. A 42.3% agreement was found for the questionnaire and accelerometer tertiles of total physical activity.Conclusion:The concurrent validity proved that the questionnaire might be valid only for older adolescent boys. The authors consider that whenever available physical activity objective measurements should be used instead of questionnaires.
