Abstract Background This study assesses the internal consistency and known group validity of the Turkish version of the SPPIC, a measurement instrument to assess the self perceived pressure from informal care in family caregivers of people with dementia that was originally in Dutch. Methods The feasibility, comprehensibility and appropriateness of the Turkish SPPIC were assessed during a pilot test. Internal consistency was examined based on data from 117 family caregivers with a Turkish immigrant background by calculating Cronbach’s alpha and by conducting a single-factor Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Known group validity was determined to obtain an understanding of the validity of the translated instrument, testing differences in the self-perceived pressure from informal care, depending on frequency of caregiving, living with a person with dementia and level of education. Results The pilot test showed that the translated SPPIC was considered to be feasible, comprehensible and appropriate. The internal consistency appeared to be strong (Cronbach’s alpha: 0.94). The CFA indicated that the factor ‘Self-perceived Pressure from Informal Care’ explained varying levels of variance in the items of the SPPIC (ranging from .52 to .87). Family caregivers who provided care at least once a week and who shared a home with a person with dementia perceived a greater pressure from informal care (p = 0.007, p = 0.001). Conclusions The Turkish translation of the SPPIC can be used in future research and practice to obtain insight into self-perceived pressure from informal care of family caregivers with Turkish immigrant backgrounds. At the same time it is recommended to conduct more research on how the measurement of self-perceived pressure from informal care in this group can be further improved.

The relationships between caregiver burden as measured with the Burden Scale for Family Caregivers–short form and 6 characteristics of caregivers caring for patients with dementia were investigated for caregivers from England (n = 36), Finland (n = 42), and Greece (n = 46) using survey data. In all 3 countries, caregiver burden increases with physical problems of the caregiver, emotional problems of the caregiver, and weekly hours of care. Hence, in all 3 countries, special support for informal care is required when these characteristics are at high levels. When the caregiver is a spouse or long-term partner of the person with dementia, lives in the same house as this person, or spends fewer than 20 h/wk for other duties than care, this is associated with less caregiver burden in England but with more caregiver burden in Greece. Accordingly, special support is required for Greek caregivers with these characteristics, but the opposite is true for English caregivers.

Abstract Background In chronic diseases like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), self-efficacy is one of important health outcomes. The IBD-Self-Efficacy Scale (IBD-SES) is an outcome measure used in research settings. In this study, we aimed to develop a Japanese version of IBD-SES and investigate the self-efficacy of IBD patients in Japan. Methods We conducted a questionnaire survey with IBD patients from two different sources: outpatients of a specialized IBD clinic and respondents recruited online. The original 29-item IBD-SES, with scores from 1 (not at all) to 10 (totally) in each item, and higher scores indicating greater self-management efficacy, was translated into Japanese with permission of the original author and was used for the surveys after confirming its linguistic equivalence with the original version. The reliability of the scale was assessed by calculating the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for internal consistency, and the validity was assessed by disease activity (remission vs. active period) for known-group validity. Items of IBD-SES score comparison between the outpatient clinic group and online group were performed by t-test. Results A total of 919 valid responses were obtained, 482 patients (ulcerative colitis (UC): 184, Crohn’s disease (CD): 298) from the specialized IBD clinic and 437 (UC: 255, CD: 182) online. The mean score per item for each subscale [Stress & Emotion Management], [Outpatient care & medication management], [Symptom & disease management] and [Maintenance of remission] was 4.7, 7.3, 4.9, and 4.9, respectively. Internal consistency was confirmed on each subscale (Cronbach’s α: 0.85–0.94). Comparing remission and active periods, significant differences were observed in three subscales: [Stress & Emotion Management (p < 0.001)], [Symptom & disease management (p < 0.001)] and [Maintenance of remission (p < 0.001)], and the known group validity was mostly confirmed. Conclusion This study demonstrates the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the IBD-SES and reveals the current status of self-efficacy of the self-management of IBD patients in Japan. Compared to previous studies using IBD-SES in the USA or Canada, scores observed with Japanese IBD patients are lower. It might reflect a cultural difference.

Analysis of the responses of 139 male and 83 female Lithuanian 12-14 year-olds to a translation of the Self-Description Questionnaire-1 (SDQ-1; Marsh, 1988 ) supported the internal consistency and factor structure of this instrument. Some evidence of a “positivity” response bias was found, however. Comparison of the Lithuanian responses to those of like-aged Australian, Chinese, Filipino, Nepalese, and Nigerian children indicated the Lithuanians tended to report rather lower self-esteem. The Lithuanian males also tended to report lower self-esteem than their female peers. Interpretation of the results are considered in terms of reactions to the recent upheavals in Eastern Europe, stable cultural dimensions, and possible cultural and gender biases in the items of the SDQ-1.

Background:Responsive behaviours in dementia are associated with poor outcomes for the person with dementia (PWD) and caregiver burnout. Family caregivers need a variety of tools to manage responsive behaviours. The Baycrest Quick-Response Caregiver Tool was developed to provide caregivers with a tool that can be used in real time. In this study, the feasibility, impact, and effectiveness of this new tool were studied in family caregivers and health care providers (HCP) using quantitative and qualitative measures. Methods:Family caregivers were recruited and were asked to complete a pre-survey before being sent the link to the educational tool. One month after the telephone survey, caregivers were sent an online post-survey to gather their feedback on the tool and the impact of the tool on caregiver well -being. Healthcare providers were also recruited and reviewed the tool through an online feedback survey. The feasibility, impact, and effectiveness of the tool were assessed using quantitative and qualitative measures. Results:Caregivers had a moderate degree of and reported a high level of competence - these scores were maintained throughout the study. Caregivers reported that tool positively impacted their compassion towards the person with dementia (PWD), and that their interactions with improved. 100% of HCP who completed the feedback survey would recommend the tool to other HCP and to caregivers of PWD. The caregivers and HCP provided specific suggestions for improvement. Conclusions:The Baycrest Quick-Response Caregiver Tool was found to be feasible and helpful. It provides caregivers and HCP with an additional approach for responsive behaviours.

The current study was planned to test the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the COVID-19 Literacy Scale. The sample of the study was taken from 473 individuals. In this study, language validity, content validity and construct validity were examined to determine the validity of the scale. Its reliability was evaluated by internal consistency, split-half reliability, and test-retest reliability method. It was defined that the scale has a two-factor structure as a result of EFA and its factor loadings are in the appropriate range (0.852–0.324). According to the CFA result, it was determined that the model-data fit was at a good level. The Cronbach values for the whole scale and subscales were .92, .90, and .87, respectively. It was observed that the test-retest value was .95. It was concluded that the Turkish form of the COVID-19 Literacy Scale is a reliable and valid tool.

Background & Aim: Self-care in patients with heart failure can improve multiple outcomes and reduce mortality. Measuring self-care requires valid and reliable tools. This study aimed to determine the psychometric properties of the 9-items European Heart Failure Self-Care Behavior Scale. Methods & Materials: The present study is a psychometric evaluation. The original version of the tool was translated from English to Persian using the standard Backward-Forward method. The questionnaire's validity was assessed using face, content, criterion (the Self-Care of Heart Failure Index v.6 as a criterion), and construct validity.  An exploratory factor analysis approach was used to construct validity with a sample of 216 patients with chronic heart failure referred to Dr. Shariati and Imam Khomeini Hospital's heart clinics in Tehran; and Ayatollah Mousavi Hospital in Zanjan. The reliability of the questionnaire was evaluated by internal consistency and stability methods. Results: After the validation process (validity and reliability), all 9 items of the questionnaire were approved and remained. The content validity index of the total content of the questionnaire was calculated to be 0.96. Based on factor analysis, only one factor was confirmed for the questionnaire. The correlation between the present questionnaire and the Self-Care of Heart Failure Index v.6 was positive and significant (p<0.001, r=0.753). Internal consistency (α=0.728) and stability (0.897) of the questionnaire were also confirmed. Conclusion: The European Heart Failure Self-Care Behavior Scale is valid and reliable for measuring Iranian patients' self-care behaviors with heart failure.
