Abstract Background The statement format of the Decisional Conflict Scale (sf-DCS) is designed and widely used to assess patients’ state of uncertainty during health related decision making. As yet no Mandarin version of the sf-DCS has been produced. This study aims to produce the first Mandarin version of the sf-DCS and test its validity and reliability in mainland China. Methods The translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the original English version of the sf-DCS into Mandarin was carried out in accordance with previously published guidelines. The psychometric properties of sf-DCS were assessed in two hypothesized decision-making contexts through online surveys. Results In the online survey designed to test scale validity and reliability, 437 people responded to the influenza immunization survey and 238 responded to the breast cancer screening survey. The results confirm that the Mandarin version of sf-DCS has good criteria validity and the exploratory factor analysis suggested a fitted revised five factors model by removing three items. Respondents who were “unsure” about their decisions/intentions, had read less information, and reported lower self-perceived prior knowledge level scored higher on sf-DCS. The Cronbach’s alpha for the sf-DCS total score was 0.963 and that for each subscale ranged from 0.784 to 0.937 in both decision making contexts, and the test-retest correlation coefficient was 0.528. Conclusions The Mandarin version of sf-DCS has good criteria validity and its internal consistency is satisfactory. Our analysis suggests a refinement of the original sf-DCS’s factor structure is needed.

Abstract Background The Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire—MHQ—is a well-known self-assessment questionnaire, where patients’ own perception in terms of recovery, pain and the ability to return to activities of daily living is assessed. The purpose of the study was to translate and culturally adapt the Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire to Swedish and to test the validity and reliability in patients with surgically treated distal radius fractures. Methods The cross-cultural adaptation and the translation process were conducted according to predefined guidelines. Seventy-eight patients with surgically treated distal radius fractures completed the translated version of the questionnaire on their six-week follow-up visit. Results The translation and cross-cultural adaptation process revealed no major linguistic or cultural issues. The internal consistency of the MHQ-Swe ranged from 0.77 to 0.94 at test 1 and from 0.81 to 0.96 at test 2 for all subscales, which indicates good internal consistency in the subscales. The hand function subscale revealed the lowest results and work performance the highest. The ICCs showed excellent test-retest reliability, ranging from 0.77 to 0.90 on all MHQ subscales and 0.92 on total score. The highest results for the ICC were seen in the satisfaction subscale (ICC = 0.90), while the lowest were seen in the aesthetic subscale (ICC = 0.77). The correlation analysis between the MHQ-Swe, PRWE and VAS showed a generally moderate to high correlation for all the subscales. Conclusions The Swedish version of the MHQ, the MHQ-Swe, showed good validity and reliability and it is therefore an appropriate and relevant questionnaire for use in patients with surgically treated distal radius fractures. Background: No questionnaire is currently available for use in patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in an Indonesian population. The most-used questionnaire in clinical research for these patients is the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) Subjective Knee Form, as its psychometric properties are considered to be excellent. Purpose: To translate the IKDC into Indonesian and assess its validity for use in Indonesian-speaking patients with ACL injuries. Study Design: Cohort study (diagnosis); Level of evidence, 2. Methods: After a forward-and-backward translation procedure and cross-cultural adaptation, the validity and reliability of the questionnaire were investigated. The responses of ACL injury patients on 3 questionnaires, the Indonesian-IKDC (I-IKDC), 36-Item Short Form Health Survey, and Kujala Anterior Knee Pain Scale, were compared. Following consensus-based standards for the selection of health measurement instruments guidelines, construct validity, test-retest reliability, internal consistency, floor and ceiling effects, and measurement error were determined. The Bland-Altman method was used to explore absolute agreement. Results: Of 253 ACL injury patients, 106 (42%) responded to the invitation. Construct validity was considered good, as all predefined hypotheses on correlations between the I-IKDC and other scores were confirmed. Reliability proved excellent, with a high test-retest correlation (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.99). Bland-Altman analyses showed no systematic bias between test and retest. Internal consistency was good (Cronbach α = .90). There were no floor or ceiling effects. Standard error of measurement was 2.1, and the minimal detectable change was 5.8 at the individual level and 0.7 at the group level. Conclusion: The I-IKDC, as developed, appeared to be a good evaluation instrument for Indonesian patients with ACL injuries.

Education research is increasingly paying attention to students’ cross-cultural adaption in Mainland China. As a special administrative region of China, educational systems and language of instruction of Macao are different from those of Mainland China. This study analyzes the cross-cultural adaptation of Macao students in Mainland China by using qualitative semi-structured interviews. The results show that study motivation, medium of instruction, and social integration are important factors determining how Macao students adapt to university programs. Failure to adapt to the language of instruction is the most direct, prominent, and enduring problem that Macao students encounter when studying in the Mainland. The current study’s findings have practical implications for faculties who provide support and training to Macao students in Mainland China. The study discovers that strengthening the Mandarin language skills of Macao students is currently a priority.

BACKGROUND: The Back Pain Attitudes Questionnaire (Back-PAQ) is a tool developed for the assessment of attitudes about back pain. However, this tool is not available in the Arabic language. The availability of the Arabic version of the questionnaire will enable clinicians and researchers in Arabic-speaking countries to assess patients’ attitudes towards back pain. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to translate and cross-culturally adapt the English version of the Back-PAQ into Arabic and study its psychometric properties. METHODS: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation processes were performed according to published guidelines. The translated Arabic version was tested for face and content validity on 40 participants. The psychometric properties of the final Arabic version were tested on 110 participants. Participants completed the Arabic version of the Back-PAQ and Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ). A subgroup of 50 participants completed the questionnaire twice in a week interval to determine the Back-PAQ test-retest reliability. RESULTS: The majority of participants found the questionnaire understandable and the questions relevant and appropriate for their back problem. There was a fair correlation between the Back-PAQ-Arabic and the FABQ physical activity scale (rho = 0.283, p= 0.001), and little to no correlation with total FABQ (rho = 0.186, p= 0.026) and education level (rho =-0.162, p= 0.045). The Arabic Back-PAQ-Arabic showed moderate internal consistency with Cronbach’s α of 0.601, and excellent test-retest reliability (ICC2,1= 0.963). The Back-PAQ standard error of measurement was 3.57 and minimum detectable changes was 9.90. CONCLUSION: The Arabic version of the Back-PAQ has adequate validity and reliability properties.

114 Background: Treatment-related infertility is a source of long-term psychological distress in cancer survivors, particularly among women. Decisions about fertility preservation (FP) are made under conditions of high stress and time pressure, which may contribute to the relatively low uptake of FP among women with cancer. Little is known about the effect of interventions to support the decision-making process and reduce fertility-related distress in cancer survivors considering FP. We describe the design and preliminary data from a randomized trial to determine whether incorporating psychological assessment and intervention into the standard FP consultation enhances satisfaction with decision-making and psychosocial outcomes. Methods: We developed a brief intervention for women referred to our institution’s oncofertility service for consideration of FP. The intervention focuses on values clarification for decision support, identification of unmet psychosocial needs, and mindfulness and acceptance-based skills. Participants were randomized to usual care (consultation with a reproductive endocrinologist and nurse) or the intervention (usual care plus a 1-hour visit with a psychologist and two follow-up calls). Outcomes included feasibility measures and measures of decisional conflict (Decisional Conflict Scale) and satisfaction with the FP program (Client Satisfaction Questionnaire-8). Results: All 14 participants randomized to date have completed baseline and 1-month assessments. The mean age was 32 (SD = 7.5, range 20-44), and the majority were nulliparous (n = 9, 64%). All 7 intervention participants completed at least 1 follow-up call, and 5 (71%) completed both follow-up calls. Across all participants, Decisional Conflict Scale scores decreased from baseline (M = 24.8, SD = 17.2) to 1 month (M = 22.2, SD = 16.3). Overall satisfaction with the program at 1 month was high (M = 29 out of a possible 32). Conclusions: Incorporating a psychological assessment and intervention into a standard FP consultation appears feasible and may improve levels of decisional conflict over time. Women appeared to find the intervention helpful when contemplating FP.

Understanding attitudes toward suicide, especially among healthcare personnel, is an important step in both suicide prevention and treatment. We document the adaptation process and establish the validity and reliability of the Attitudes Toward Suicide (ATTS) questionnaire among 262 healthcare personnel in 2 major public hospitals in the Klang Valley, Malaysia. The findings indicate that healthcare personnel in Malaysia have unique constructs on suicide attitude, compared with the original study on a Western European sample. The adapted Malay ATTS questionnaire demonstrates adequate reliability and validity for use among healthcare personnel in Malaysia.
