Abstract Background Group A rotaviruses (RVA) are zoonotic pathogens responsible for acute enteritis in human and neonatal ruminants. This research aimed to determine the prevalence of RVA in ruminants (cattle, sheep, and goats) and investigate the circulating RVA genotypes in these animals in Kuwait. We conducted a cross-sectional study to detect RVA in ruminants, using an immunochromatography test (IC), direct sandwich ELISA test, and real-time RT-PCR (RT-qPCR) assay using fecal samples. Results A total of 400 cattle, 334 sheep, and 222 goats were examined. The prevalence of RVA was 5.3, 1.2, and 2.3%, respectively, using IC. The ELISA test detected RVA from 4.3% of cattle, 0.9% of sheep, and 1.8% of goats. There was a significant association between the occurrence of diarrhea and the presence of RVA in bovine fecal samples (p-value = 0.0022), while no statistical association between diarrhea and the presence of RVA in fecal samples of sheep and goats was observed (p-value = 0.7250; p-value = 0.4499, respectively). Twenty-three of the IC-positive samples (17 from cattle, two from sheep, and four from goats) were tested using a RT-qPCR RVA detection assay targeting the NSP3 gene. The results showed that 21 of 23 IC-positive samples tested positive by RT-qPCR. Detection of RVA genotypes revealed that G10P[11] was the predominant strain in cattle (58.8%), followed by G8P[1] (11.7%). One sheep sample was genotyped as G8P[1]. In addition, G6P[1] and G6P[14] were detected in goat samples. Conclusion The present study revealed that the IC was more sensitive in detecting RVA antigen in fecal samples than the ELISA test. A higher occurrence of RVA infection was observed in cattle than in sheep and goats. This study suggests that RVA might be a risk factor of diarrhea in bovine calves less than 2 weeks old. This research also demonstrates the circulation of RVA in sheep and goat populations in Kuwait. Finally, the G10P[11] RVA genotype was the most prevalent genotype identified from cattle samples.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of bovine cryptosporidiosis using 110 fecal samples of crossbred diarrhoeic calves from two different areas (Muktagacha, Mymensingh and Shajadpur, Sirajgonj) in Bangladesh during April 2012 to September 2014. The fecal samples were screened by rapid detection kit and confirmed by Modified Ziehl- Neelsen staining, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The positive samples along with standard positive control yielded 1325bp band on PCR. The overall prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in crossbred calves was 28.18% (31/110) by rapid detection kit. The higher prevalence of cryptosporidiosis was found in the calves from Shajadpur (29.76%) than the calves from Muktagacha (23.08%).The prevalence of cryptosporidiosis was significantly (p<0.001) higher in calves between 1-2 months (70%) age group than less than one month age group (24.49%). Cryptosporidiosis was not observed in calves over two months age. The prevalence of cryptosporidiosis was higher in males (34.75%) than females (24.64%) although not significant statistically. It is evident that the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in bovine in these areas is under diagnosed and the clinical status of infection is potentially high.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjvm.v12i2.21288 Bangl. Objectives: To identify in vivo correlation between 25(OH)D and VEGF in severe preeclampsia.Materials and Methods: A case control, cross sectional study of 36 pregnant women which consist of 18 patients with preeclampsia and 18 patients as control with gestational age-matched. We perform 25(OH)D serum examination by chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) and VEGF serum examination by sandwich ELISA to all patients.Results: All patients are in 25(OH)D insufficiency and deficiency state. Both maternal 25(OH)D and VEGF levels were inversely associated with the risk of preeclampsia (both P<0.05). There is no correlation between 25(OH)D serum level and VEGF serum level (P=0,629).Conclusion: Maternal vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased preeclampsia risk. However, our data do not support the hypothesis that the association between vitamin D deficiency and preeclampsia is mediated by impaired level of VEGF.

This cross sectional study was carried out in SSMC for a period of one year from July 2007 to June 2008 to evaluate rK39 based ELISA and KAtex tests for diagnosis of Kala-azar. Total 150 patients were selected clinically. For this study rK39 ICT was regarded as confirmatory test according to national guideline. Among 150, total 100 cases were confirmed to be positive for Kala-azar by rK39 ICT test. Age and sex matched 25 healthy persons each from endemic and non-endemic area were taken as control. Among the 100 sero confirmed cases KAtex was positive in 87 (sensitivity of 87%) while ELISA was positive in 98 cases (sensitivity 98%). Among the 50 controls none were positive by KAtex test while 1 (one) ELISA test was positive resulting in specificity of these tests 100% and 98% respectively. The result of the study clearly showed superiority of rK39 antigen based ELISA in respect of sensitivity and KAtex in respect of specificity.KYAMC Journal Vol. 6, No.-1, Jul 2015, Page 574-578

The sera from 120 boars from 3 farrow-to-finish swine herds in Serbia were examined for Salmonella spp. antibodies in a cross-sectional study using an ELISA test. A total of 120 blood serum samples from boars imported from Denmark were examined. All boars were seronegative to Salmonella during the import, while after one year Salmonella spp. seroprevalence ranging from 0% to 45% was found in 3 herds using two tests in the time span of one year. Only on one farm during the import in 2011, after a year boars were still seronegative. A year later on the same farm, in boars imported in 2012 the seroprevalence was 30%. Seroprevalence of Salmonella spp. in boars tested on all farms was 24,17%.
