Abstract Background Today, the attention of researchers has been drawn to the use of medicinal plant for the treatment of kidney stones. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of five plants used in traditional medicine on the dissolution of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate stones. Then, the ability of more effective plants to dissolve stones collected from patients after Percutaneous Nephrolithotripsy was investigated. Methods The aerial part of plants were extracted by maceration method. The synthesized stones in laboratory were incubated with different concentrations of the extract. Next, the concentrations of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate were measured by a calcium kit and BT 3000. The effect of the extract with the best activity on the stones collected from the patients was also studied. The composition of clinical stones was determined by colorimetric method. The total phenolic content (TPC) of the extracts was determined. Results The highest dissolution of calcium oxalate stones was observed by the G. struthium extract and the highest dissolution of calcium phosphate stones by the A. euchroma and A. officinalis root extracts. The dissolution percentage of clinical stones by the A. euchroma extract was significantly higher than other extract (P < 0.05). The highest TPC was observed in A. euchroma extract (P < 0.05). Conclusion The A. euchroma extract exhibited the greatest dissolution activity on laboratory calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate stones as well as clinical stones made of high amounts of calcium oxalate. Therefore, the extract can be effective in preventing and treating kidney stones.

 Objective: The present study was to demonstrate the in vitro anti-lithiatic effect of Ipomoea batatas (Convolvulaceae) leaves and tuberous roots.Methods: The obtained ethanolic extract of I. batatas leaves and tuberous roots (EIBL and EIBR) and aqueous extract of I. batatas leaves and roots (AIBL and AIBR) were used for this in vitro study. The dissolution method of calcium oxalate by titrimetry method and calcium phosphate by colorimetric method was studied. Nucleation and aggregation of calcium oxalate crystals were determined by a spectrophotometric assay.Results: In the estimation of calcium oxalate by titrimetry method, the I. batatas leaves and roots have very significant (p<0.01) capability to dissolve calcium oxalate. Percentage dissolution of calcium oxalate crystals was found to be 37.53%, 22.74%, 39.74%, and 24.28% for EIBL, AIBL, EIBR, and AIBR, respectively. In the estimation of calcium phosphate by colorimetric method, the percentage dissolution of calcium phosphate crystals by EIBL, AIBL, EIBR, and AIBR was found to be 67.15%, 43.17%, 76.74%, and 47.96%, respectively. The I. batatas leaves and roots were significantly (p<0.01) dissolved calcium phosphate also. The results were clearly shown that I. batatas extracts significantly (p<0.01) inhibited both nucleation and aggregation of calcium oxalate crystals by concentration-dependent manner. The maximum percent inhibition of calcium oxalate nucleation by EIBL, AIBL, EIBR, and AIBR was found to be 59.09%, 50.0%, 84.09%, and 47.73%, respectively, at 1000 μg/ml. The EIBL, AIBL, EIBR, and AIBR were inhibited calcium oxalate aggregation by 63.46%, 36.54%, 84.61%, and 42.3%, respectively, at 1000 μg/ml.Conclusions: The results clearly indicate that I. batatas leaves and tuberous roots were found to express in vitro anti-lithiatic potential.

Sorghum biscuits were enriched with mushroom powders (Lentinula edodes, Auricularia auricula and Tremella fuciformis) at 5%, 10% and 15% substitution levels. An in vitro gastrointestinal digestion was used to evaluate the effect of this enrichment on the phenolic content and soluble peptide content as well as antioxidant activities of the gastric or intestinal supernatants (bio-accessible fractions), and the remaining portions of phenolic compounds, antioxidants and β-glucan in the undigested residue (non-digestible fraction). The phenolic content of the gastric and intestinal supernatants obtained from digested mushroom-enriched biscuits was found to be higher than that of control biscuit, and the phenolic content was positively correlated to the antioxidant activities in each fraction (p < 0.001). L. edodes and T. fuciformis enrichment increased the soluble protein content (small peptide) of sorghum biscuits after in vitro digestion. All mushroom enrichment increased the total phenolic content and β-glucan content of the undigested residue and they were positively correlated (p < 0.001). The insoluble dietary fibre of biscuits was positively correlated with β-glucan content (p < 0.001) of undigested residue. These findings suggested that enriching food with mushroom derived dietary fibre increases the bioavailability of the non-digestible β-glucan and phenolic compounds.

The present study investigated the effect of 1-MCP on bioavailability of Lingwu long jujube stored at 0 °C for 60 days. At the end of the storage, compared with the control samples, Lingwu long jujube treated with 1-MCP exhibited higher Vc bioaccessibility, total phenolic content and free radical scavenging capacity, which demonstrated that 1-MCP treatment could provide a better effect on maintaining the bioavailability of Lingwu long jujube.

Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc, a medicinal plant, contains many phenolic compounds such as resveratrol. It has antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-cancer, HIV, and neuron protective properties. In this study, stem segments having an auxiliary bud were cultured in vitro on MS medium supplemented with TDZ at 0.1 mg/L for obtaining the highest number of shoots (8–9 shoots/cluster after eight weeks). The bud shoots were originated from the differentiation in the periphery of the lateral meristem. After eight weeks, the shoots cultured under the monochromatic light showed that the plant height, fresh and dry weight was higher than those grown under the fluorescent light at the same intensity of 50 µmol photon/m2/sec. Blue LED reduced the number of shoots/cluster, and respiration intensity of the inoculum compared to the red LED or fluorescent light conditions. However, after eight weeks, the total sugar and phenolic content in leaves and stems, as well as the resveratrol content of shoots under blue light, were always higher than under red LED or fluorescent light. Moreover, when samples were exposed under the one-week blue light condition at a double intensity (100 µmol photon/m2/sec), the shoot clusters growing under blue LED also had a remarkably high total phenolic content and significantly high resveratrol levels compared to the two other treatments. The roles of endogenous growth regulators in shoot clusters under different lighting conditions were also analyzed and discussed.

Green leafy vegetables are the most underexploited class of vegetables despite high nutritional value. The current study has been focused on the evaluation of anti-oxidant status of fresh and dehydrated under- utilized green leafy vegetable namely Mukia maderaspatana (L.) (Family: Cucurbitaceae), an indigenous plant; traditionally it is used as an ingredient of various cocktail preparations for the management of severe inflammatory disorders in Indian system of medicine. The total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and total antioxidant activities were evaluated for the ethanolic extract of leaves to assess the in vitro antioxidant activities. The results showed that there exist a linear correlation between polyphenol content and antioxidant property. The ethanolic extract of dehydrated Mukia leaves showed the highest phenolic content (269.34 ± 0.78mg GAE/g), and total antioxidant activity (543±46 µmol Trolox/100 g). HPTLC analysis has revealed the presence of significant quantity of Quercitin (26.52%), an important flavonoid of tremendous antioxidant, anticancer and ant inflammatory properties in both the fresh and dehydrated leaves which might be the chief bioactive principle in Mukia.

The current line of investigation was focused at perusing the presence of phytochemical constituents, investigation of total phenol and flavonoid content, the antioxidant potential of various extracts of Caralluma adscendens whole plant using various in-vitro assays. The dried plant powder was extracted with various solvents based on polarity (Pet ether, Chloroform, Ethyl acetate, Ethanol and Aqueous) by hot continuous extraction in Soxhlet's apparatus and Extracts were dried. Phytoconstituents present in each extract was examined by performing preliminary phytochemical screening. Total Phenolic Content (TPC), Total Flavonoid Content (TFC) and Antioxidant potential for crude extracts were studied by DPPH, nitric oxide scavenging and FRAP methods. The total phenolic content and flavonoid content of Ethanolic extract of plant was found to be 80.08±0.629mg and 70.88±1.170mg of GAE and Quercetin equivalents respectively. The Ethanolic extract exhibited potent antioxidant activity as determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH), nitric oxide scavenging and ferric reducing antioxidant power assays(FRAP) than the other extracts. The IC50 values for the Ethanolic extract of Caralluma adscendens was found to be 214.765±0.224 µg/ml and 215.928±0.506µg/ml by DPPH and nitric oxide scavenging assays respectively.
