Abstract Previous studies indicate that individuals’ default behaviors on online peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms greatly influence other borrowers’ default intentions. However, the mechanism of this impact is not clear. Moreover, there is scarce research in regard to which factors influence the relationship between an individual’s default behavior and an observer’s default intention. These important questions are yet to be resolved; hence, we conducted two experiments using the scenario-based research method, focusing on Chinese online P2P lending platforms. Our results indicate that an individual’s default behavior can trigger an observer’s default intention as a result of the imperfect punitive measures as they currently exist on Chinese online P2P lending platforms. Both the observer’s moral disengagement level and pragmatic self-activation level serve as mediating variables. In situations where an observer knows an individual’s default behavior, the level of intimacy between the defaulter and observer positively affects the relationship between their default behavior and intention. The intimacy level also positively influences the relationship between the individual’s default behavior and the two mediator variables. Based on the findings, we provide management suggestions in the context of online P2P lending. Our study sets a foundation for future research to utilize other methods to extend the present research findings to other regions and domains.

Abstract This paper reports on an exploratory study examining the relationship between text characteristics, perceived difficulty and task performance in sight translation (ST). Twenty-nine undergraduate interpreters were asked to sight-translate six texts with different properties. Correlation analysis shows that Sophisticated Word Type and Mean Length of a T-unit are, respectively, the lexical and the syntactic variables having the highest correlations with all the three dependent variables (i.e. perceived difficulty, accuracy and fluency in ST performance). Surprisingly, the discoursal variables are weakly or modestly correlated with the dependent variables. Thematic analysis of the students’ reflective essays points to two hypothesized causal links among the three Ps in ST: task properties may cause decoding difficulties and cognitive overload in the cognitive process, which in turn lead to inaccuracy and dysfluency in ST performance. The research findings lend empirical support to the “shallow-scan hypothesis” in previous research. Finally, this study proposes a three-tier conceptual framework to inform and guide future research to operationalize variables in ST empirical studies. The pedagogical implications of ST are also discussed.

We investigated the mediating role of product status signaling in the relationship between materialism and product satisfaction of Saudi and Malaysian adults. We performed structural equation modeling to analyze data from 894 Generations X and Y participants in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia, who responded to a self-administered survey. Contrary to previous research findings both from Malaysia, and from North American and other Western-culture samples, there were positive significant direct effects of materialism on product satisfaction for consumers in both countries. The results of the mediating effect (materialistic values → product status signaling → product satisfaction) indicated that, for Saudis, the effect was positive and moderate in strength, whereas for Malaysians, the effect was positive and strong. The overall results showed that product status signaling acted as a partial mediator in the relationship between materialistic values and product satisfaction. On the basis of these results, it is important for marketers to understand that both Malaysian and Saudi consumers—Saudis in particular—tend to rely, and focus, on the symbolic meanings attached to products that will only be successfully communicated if the symbolism in the product is socially and visibly recognized by these consumers. Suggestions for future research are offered.

Research in the area of video game play and sports psychology has suggested that specific strategies are often employed by players to justify aggressive behaviour used during gameplay. The present study investigates the relationship between game play and moral disengagement strategies in a group of 605 adults who played violent videogames or regularly played competitive sports. The results suggest that sports players were more likely than violent game players to endorse moral disengagement strategies. The video gamers were more likely to use a specific set of moral disengagement strategies (i.e., cognitive restructuring) than the other groups and this may be related to the structural characteristics of videogames. The findings add to recent research exploring the mechanisms by which individuals engage in aggressive acts both virtually and in real-life situations. The results are discussed in relation to similar relevant research in the area, along with recommendations for future research.

This study aims to understand the relationship of each party in the Peer to Peer Lending system legally and to analyze dispute resolution arrangements in the Peer to Peer Lending system. The method in this research is normative juridical research using a statutory approach in analyzing legal issues whose sources of law come from primary, secondary and tertiary legal materials. The results of this paper indicate that there is no specific arrangement regarding dispute resolution in the Peer to Peer Lending system. Disputes in this system require a dispute resolution process that is fast, easy, and affordable, so it is necessary to establish an alternative online Dispute Resolution Institute which specifically handles business disputes with the Peer to Peer Lending system.
