AbstractWhen searching for a known target, mental representations of target features, or templates, guide attention towards matching objects and facilitate recognition. When only distractor features are known, distractor templates allow irrelevant objects to be recognised and attention to be shifted away. This is particularly true in X-ray baggage search, a challenging real-world visual search task with implications for public safety, where targets may be unknown, difficult to predict and concealed by an adversary, but distractors are typically benign and easier to identify. In the present study, we draw on basic principles of distractor suppression and rejection to investigate a counterintuitive ‘targetless’ approach to training baggage search. In a simulated X-ray baggage search task, we observed significant benefits to target detection sensitivity (d′) for targetless relative to target-based training, but no effects of performance-contingent rewards or the inclusion of superordinate semantic categories during training. The benefits of targetless search training were most apparent for stimuli involving less spatial overlap (occlusion), which likely represents the difficulty and greater individual variation involved in searching more visually complex images. Together, these results demonstrate the effectiveness of a counterintuitive targetless approach to training target detection in X-ray baggage search, based on basic principles of distractor suppression and rejection, with potential for use as a real-world training tool.

This article presents some streamlined and intentionally oversimplified ideas about educating future communication disorders professionals to use some of the most basic principles of evidence-based practice. Working from a popular five-step approach, modifications are suggested that may make the ideas more accessible, and therefore more useful, for university faculty, other supervisors, and future professionals in speech-language pathology, audiology, and related fields.

ABSTRACTChalcogenide semiconductors have been deposited epitaxially from aqueous solutions either chemically or electrochemically at growth rates of up to 0.7 μmhr−1. After recalling the basic principles of these deposition processes, results are presented concerning chemically deposited CdS on InP, GaP and CuInSe2 substrates, electrodeposited CdTe on InP, and CdSAnP heterostructures. Characterisation of these structures by RHEED, TEM, HRTEM, and glazing angle X ray diffraction allows to analyse the effects of substrate orientation, polarity, lattice match plus the influence of temperature on epitaxial growth. These results are discussed in terms of self organisation and a site selective growth mechanisms due to the free enegy of formation of each compound.

Background:Evidence on the efficacy of biologics in the treatment of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients with axial manifestations affecting 30-70% of PsA patients is limited. Secukinumab (SEC) has provided significant and sustained improvement in the signs and symptoms of active PsA and ankylosing spondylitis.Objectives:This study aims to analyze the experience of using SEC for PsA patients with axial involvement in real-world setting.Methods:Multicentric observational, longitudinal, retrospective study conducted in a tertiary hospital between January 2016 and December 2019. Patients with PsA (CASPAR criteria) and clinical and/or image diagnosis of axial involvement receiving at least one dose of SEC were included. Patients with non-pathological sacroiliacs x-ray and MRI had to have spinal pain VAS ≥4/10 after failure to NSAIDs, prior to the onset of SEC, to be included. Medical records were reviewed to collect demographic and clinical data, features of PsA (manifestations, treatments and activity assessment). Descriptive statistics and then a comparative analysis with the Studentt-test to analyze the effectiveness of SEC were performed.Results:Of 98 PsA patients treated with SEC, 58 (59.2%) had axial involvement, of which 41 (71%) female. Mean age was 54 y.o (SD 10) and average duration of the disease was 10 years (SD 8). All 58 patients had peripheral disease (33% joint erosions), 55 (95%) had psoriasis, 20 (34%) showed dactilitis and 39 (67%) had enthesitis. Sacroiliacs x-ray was damaged in 38 (66%) patients (grade I-IV) and 23 (40%) pathological MRI, with HLAB27+ at 8 (14%) patients. Average BMI was 29 (SD 8), with an obesity rate of 33% (19 pt). Observed comorbidities were hypertension (27 pt, 47%), diabetes mellitus (6 pt, 10%), dyslipidemia (23 pt, 40%), active smoking (18 pt, 31%) and malignancy (6 pt, 10%). Regarding previous treatments, 90% had received cDMARDs, particularly methotrexate (86%) and 40 (69%) had been exposed to at least one bDMARD (15 pt to one, 9 to two, 6 to three and 10 to four or more). 7 patients were on 300 mg dose and 51 patients on 150 mg dose (dose escalation to 300 mg was performed in 16 patients and 44% respond and maintain SEC). Average drug survival time was 1.4 (SD 1) years. At 6 months of SEC therapy, tender and swollen joint count, spinal pain VAS, CRP, ASDAS-CRP and DAPSA had significantly decreased (Table 1). 29 (50%) patients suspended SEC during follow-up due to primary ineffectiveness (8), secondary ineffectiveness (16), adverse events (3), latex allergy (1) and remission (1). X-ray focusing based on Bragg reflection at curved crystals allows collection of a large solid angle of incident radiation, monochromatization of this radiation, and condensation of the beam reflected at the crystal into a small spatial cross-section in a pre-selected focal plane. Thus, for the Bragg reflected radiation, one can achieve higher intensities than for the radiation passing directly to the same small area in the focal plane. In that case one can profit considerably from X-ray focusing in an EDXRF arrangement. The 00 2 reflection at Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) crystals offers a very high intensity of the Bragg reflected beam for a wide range of photon energies. Furthermore, curvature radii smaller than 10 mm can be achieved for HOPG crystals ensuring efficient X-ray focusing in EDXRF applications. For the trace analysis of very small amounts of specimen material deposited on small areas of thin-filter backings, HOPG based X-ray focusing may be used to achieve a very high intensity of monochromatic excitation radiation.

Two experiments investigated participants' ability to search for targets in a cluttered small-scale space. The first experiment was conducted in the real world with two field of view conditions (full vs. restricted), and participants found the task trivial to perform in both. The second experiment used the same search task but was conducted in a desktop virtual environment (VE), and investigated two movement interfaces and two visual scene conditions. Participants restricted to forward only movement performed the search task quicker and more efficiently (visiting fewer targets) than those who used an interface that allowed more flexible movement (forward, backward, left, right, and diagonal). Also, participants using a high fidelity visual scene performed the task significantly quicker and more efficiently than those who used a low fidelity scene. The performance differences among all the conditions decreased with practice, but the performance of the best VE group approached that of the real-world participants. These results indicate the importance of using high fidelity scenes in VEs, and suggest that the use of a simple control system is sufficient for maintaining one's spatial orientation during searching.
