Prospectivity of the Triassic successions of the North West Shelf of Australia: New insights from a regional integrated geoscience study

The North West Shelf (NWS) of Australia is a prolific hydrocarbon province hosting significant volumes of hydrocarbons, primarily derived from Jurassic and Cretaceous targets. A new regional, integrated geoscience study has been undertaken to develop insights into the paleogeography and petroleum systems of Late Permian to Triassic successions, which have been underexplored historically in favor of Jurassic to Cretaceous targets. Within the NWS study area, graben and half-graben depocenters developed in response to intracratonic rifting that preceded later fragmentation and northward rifting of small continental blocks. This, coupled with contemporaneous cycles of rising sea levels, brought about the development of large embayments and shallow, epeiric seas between the Australian continental landmass and outlying continental fragments in the early stages of divergence. Key elements of the study results discussed herein include the study methodology, the paleogeographic and gross depositional environment mapping, and the reservoir and source kitchen modeling. The study results highlight the presence of depocenters that developed within oblique rift zones due to regional Permo-Triassic strike-slip tectonics that bear compelling similarities to modern-day analogues. These intracratonic rift zones are well-known and prominent tectonic features resulting from mantle upwelling and weakening of overlying lithospheric crust, initiating the development of divergent intraplate depocenters. The comprehensive analysis of these depocenters from a paleogeographic and petroleum system perspective provides a basin evaluation tool for Triassic prospectivity.

Australia, in common with nations globally, faces an immediate and future environmental and economic challenge as an outcome of climate change. Indigenous communities in Australia, some who live a precarious economic and social existence, are particularly vulnerable to climate change. Impacts are already being experienced through dramatic weather events such as floods and bushfires. Other, more gradual changes, such as rising sea levels in the north of Australia, will have long-term negative consequences on communities, including the possibility of forced relocation. Climate change is also a historical phenomenon, and Indigenous communities hold a depth of knowledge of climate change and its impact on local ecologies of benefit to the wider community when policies to deal with an increasingly warmer world are considered. Non-Indigenous society must respect this knowledge and facilitate alliances with Indigenous communities based on a greater recognition of traditional knowledge systems.

Expansion of the North West Shelf Venture (NWSV) production infrastructure is driving plans for sequential development of the small satellite fields. The desire for additional gas reserves has fuelled increased exploration and appraisal drilling in recent years with encouraging results. The NWSV area is a complex geologic environment with multiple play levels, petroleum systems and trapping styles. Seismic imaging is poor in many areas, primarily due to multiple contamination. In 2004, the NWSV acquired the leading edge, regional Demeter 3D Seismic Survey. Since then, continuous application of improved processing techniques, such as 3D Surface-related Multiple Elimination (SRME) and Pre-Stack Depth Migration (PreSDM), have been key to providing significant imaging enhancements. Exploration drilling based on Demeter data resulted in three significant new gas discoveries. Pemberton–1 (2006) explored Triassic sub-cropping sands in a horst block at the southwestern end of the Rankin Trend. The well encountered an upside gas column due to the presence of intra-Mungaroo Formation shales providing a base-seal trapping geometry. Lady Nora–1 (2007) tested the fault block west of the Pemberton horst and encountered a 102 m gross gas column with gas on rock. The upside result accelerated a near term appraisal opportunity at Lady Nora–2 (2008). Persephone–1 (2006) drilled a down-thrown Legendre Formation dip closure in the Eaglehawk graben. Success relied on the sealing potential of the North Rankin Field bounding fault. In spite of pressure depletion associated with over 20 years of production, Persephone–1 encountered a 151 m gross gas column at virgin pressures and a different gas-water contact to North Rankin. The result demonstrated active and significant fault seal along the major North Rankin Field bounding fault. These recent, successful exploration wells have resulted in identification of follow-up drilling opportunities and a drive for ongoing seismic imaging improvements. The discoveries have material impacts on NWSV development plans for the Greater Western Flank and in the vicinity of the Perseus, North Rankin and Goodwyn gas fields.

Why are the only commercial hydrocarbon discoveries in Lower Triassic and Permian sediments of the western margin of Australia restricted to the Perth Basin and the Petrel Sub-basin? Recent regional analysis by Carnarvon Petroleum has sought to address some key questions about the Lower Triassic Locker Shale and Upper Permian Chinty and Kennedy formations petroleum systems along the shallow water margin of the Carnarvon and offshore Canning (Roebuck/Bedout) basins. This paper aims to address the following questions:Source: Is there evidence in the wells drilled to date of a working petroleum system tied to the Locker Shale or other pre-Jurassic source rocks? Reservoir: What is the palaeogeography and sedimentology of the stratigraphic units and what are the implications for the petroleum systems?The authors believed that a fresh look at the Lower Triassic to Upper Permian petroleum prospectivity of the North West Shelf would be beneficial, and key observations arising from the regional study undertaken are highlighted:Few wells along a 2,000 km area have drilled into Lower Triassic Locker Shale or older stratigraphy. Several of these wells have been geochemically and isotopically typed to potentially non Jurassic source rocks. The basal Triassic Hovea Member of the Kockatea Shale in the Perth Basin is a proven commercial oil source rock and a Hovea Member Equivalent has been identified through palynology and a distinctive sapropelic/algal kerogen facies in nearly 16 wells that penetrate the full Lower Triassic interval on the North West Shelf. Samples from the Upper Permian, the Hovea Member Equivalent and the Locker Shale have been analysed isotopically indicating –28, –34 and –30 delta C13 averages, respectively. Lower Triassic and Upper Permian reservoirs are often high net to gross sands with up to 1,000 mD permeability and around 20% porosity. Depositional processes are varied, from Locker Shale submarine canyon systems to a mixed carbonate clastic marine coastline/shelf of the Upper Permian Chinty and Kennedy formations.

The mainland coast of China is about 18,000 km long and houses about 70% of China’s largest cities and 50% of its population. For the last few decades, the rapid growth of the Chinese economy has resulted in extensive development of the coastal infrastructure and property, large-scale expansion of coastal ports, excessive reclamation of coastal land, and a significant increase in the coastal population. Previous studies have indicated that tropical cyclones (TCs) have struck the coast of China at a higher frequency and intensity, and TC-induced coastal hazards have resulted in heavy human losses and huge losses to the Chinese coastal economy. In analyzing the long-term and most recent coastal hazard data collected on the coast of China, this study has found that TC-induced storm surges are responsible for 88% of the direct coastal economic losses, while TC-induced large coastal waves have caused heavy loss of human lives, and that the hazard-caused losses are shown to increase spatially from the north to south, peak in the southern coastal sector, and well correlate to storm wave energy flux. The frequency and intensity of coastal hazards on the coast of China are expected to increase in response to future changing TC conditions and rising sea levels. A simple two-parameter conceptual model is also presented for the assessment of coastal inundation and erosion hazards on the coast of China.

Around 8200 calBP, large parts of the now submerged North Sea continental shelf (‘Doggerland’) were catastrophically flooded by the Storegga Slide tsunami, one of the largest tsunamis known for the Holocene, which was generated on the Norwegian coastal margin by a submarine landslide. In the present paper, we derive a precise calendric date for the Storegga Slide tsunami, use this date for reconstruction of contemporary coastlines in the North Sea in relation to rapidly rising sea-levels, and discuss the potential effects of the tsunami on the contemporaneous Mesolithic population. One main result of this study is an unexpectedly high tsunami impact assigned to the western regions of Jutland.

The Cameroon Development Corporation has been severely affected by the armed conflict in the English speaking (North West and South West regions) part of the country that has been on for close to four years running. How then has the armed conflict in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon affected the Cameroon Development Corporation? How can the growth of the agro-industry be guaranteed? This study looks at the impact of the armed conflict in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon on the Cameroon Development Corporation. Making use of public policy theories, this study establishes a link between government defense strategies/sector development policies and agro-industrial development. The study results show that due to the armed conflict in the English speaking regions, the CDC has incurred major damages including: loss in human capital, drop in production capacity, heavy financial loss and equipment damages. The study results also reveal that, the survival of the CDC depends largely on strategic options to be taken at two separate levels including: political options by conflicting parties - the government and separatist fighters on the one hand, and on the other, options taken by the CDC at both managerial and technical levels. The study concludes that for the CDC to attain structural growth and development that will significantly contribute to the national economy, conflicting.

The Geltwood Beach (buried) anticline is located near the ocean coast in south-east South Australia, directly west of the agricultural and industrial town of Millicent. The structure is developed in Mesozoic to Tertiary sediments forming the inner part of the continental sedimentary terrace which in this situation coincides also with the Nelson "half-graben".The Geltwood Beach anticline is more than five miles long by two or more miles wide. It is part of a still larger regional development which pitches south-east into the deeper known portions of the Gambier-Otway Cretaceous to Tertiary Basin. There is no surface expression to the structure.Structural "closure" on the base of the Tertiary may not exceed 100 feet, but an extensive area of structural flattening along the crest of the anticline (defined by structural drilling and geophysical techniques) overlies a zone of extensive sedimentary wedge-out within the predicted and prospective cretaceous sediments in depth. The wedging is predicted to be in the nature of progressive overlap onto structural "nosing" or alternatively, buried-ridge development in presumed Otway Group sediments in depth.A thickness of 5,000 to 8,000 feet of unconsolidated Upper Cretaceous to Tertiary sediments, wedging to the north-west along the crest of the anticline in the deeper developments is expected to include the prospective Belfast Mudstone equivalents and related beds of the Port Campbell (Victoria) Association.The Geltwood Beach structure lies approximately half way between the Mt. Salt No. 1 and Beachport No. 1 wells. In the distance of 45 miles between the latter wells, the dominantly Cretaceous (post-Otway) sedimentary section wedges spectacularly from 7,000 feet (possibly considerably more) to no more than 100 feet. The available geophysical evidence suggests that most of this wedging occurs within the zone of the Geltwood Beach anticline. For this reason, the anticline is believed to be well located for the development of structural and stratigraphic traps in a marginal continental shelf environment of proven thick sedimentation.In the Mt. Salt No. 1 well, clays and shales encountered at at least five stratigraphic levels within the Lower Tertiary to Middle Cretaceous section provided adequate capping to underlying highly porous and permeable reservoir sands, the lowermost of which were brine-bearing.Geltwood Beach is a locale of preferred coastal bitumen stranding. The weight of published evidence now points to nearby submarine seepage within the reach of erosive storm waves: recorded earthquakes in this vicinity are known to have greatly affected the activity of these seepages.The conclusion is reached that the Geltwood Beach anticline is favourably situated up-dip on the inner continental shelf margin to accumulate hydrocarbons in potentially commercial quantities. The structure lies south of the Beachport-Kalangadoo "hinge-line" of the Nelson half-graben in a zone of submarine oil seepage. A proposed deep test well to be located near the culmination of shallower structure is expected to provide a satisfactory test in respect to both structural and (to a lesser extent) deeper stratigraphic entrapment of petroleum.

This hybrid creative-critical article explores how new ways of living beyond the current environmental crisis are forged on two sandscaping schemes that have been constructed as new experimental measures against coastal erosion. The Zandmotor, created in 2011, is an artificial peninsula built out of sand on the coast of South Holland. The success of this project inspired a similar sandscaping scheme at Bacton on the coast of Norfolk, constructed in 2019. The strange liminal landscapes that are the result of these projects are not just symbols of adaptive, nature-based water management in times of rising sea levels, they also become time machines, making fossils of different times emerge out of the sand taken from the seabed of the North Sea. In addition, the sandscapes are symbols of the artificialization of the coastal landscape, given the fact that sand suppletions disrupt not only life on the beach, but also destroy much bottom-dwelling life on the seabed from which the sand is harvested. However, these unique liminal landscapes between land and sea also create new ecological opportunities. At the Zandmotor, for example, rare bristle worms and Baltic clams have made their unexpected appearance. Moreover, the sandscape invites people not just to look for fossilized mammoth teeth, but also inspires them to create sense-altering art projects specifically adapted to the unique conditions in the area. In this article, I trace these various significances of both sandscaping schemes and argue that they cannot be reduced to any of these different meanings. Instead, I describe the Zandmotor as an example of Donna Haraway’s idea of ‘staying with the trouble’ (2016: 4) and Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing’s concept of ‘contaminated diversity’ (2015: 30). For although enormous amounts of animal and plant life have been destroyed for the creation of the Zandmotor, this does not discredit the fact that this new liminal environment has opened up new ecological opportunities for multispecies flourishing, creating unexpected combinations of landscapes and creatures. These new combinations inspire a shift in thinking about coastal environments and present new ways of living that may emerge beyond the current environmental crisis.
